"Britons despair of violence instead of taking sides"

A head line from yesterday's Sunday Times who printed the results of of a YouGov Poll with possibly an interesting statistic of the different age demographics and how they are lined up in their support of the opposing sides in this terrible conflict. I'm focusing here on the middle ground headed up where sympathies lie,

"Both sides equally" as follows: 18-24 17%, 25-49 28%, 50-64 39%, 65 plus 37% Possibly that response of the older generation, could be argued reflects the more measured attitude of knowing that, as with most conflicts, there are two sides and situations are generally more nuanced than the superficial black and white.

Hamas attack on the defenceless citizens of Israel was the stuff of nightmares, there was a headline, a few days ago in particular, as to what was inflicted on babies which I wish I'd never seen, but once read cannot be unread. This was premeditated, barbaric in the worst possible sense, enough to think "we've come so far in how mankind has developed, but something like this happens and we might just as well be back in ancient times" We know there is another side, The Palestinians have undoubtedly been treated most unfairly, but nothing justifies the brutality that was meted out that day.

Now the Jewish communities of the western world are having the full force of the hatred of the Israeli government well and truly dumped on them. Why? THEY HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING WRONG! they are communities like the rest of us just peacefully trying to go about their daily lives. Stars of David have been daubed on Jewish houses, businesses, within their communities in Germany and France and to a lesser extent here, all resonant of previous nightmare times Jewish people lived through. The other day a Jewish woman in Lyon was stabbed, how much worse is this all going to get, it's unbelievably depressing that one community can be so unfairly reviled in this way. What of the pro Palestinian marches, whilst I accept many marching are doing just that supporting Palestine, there are equally plenty of agitators and Hamas supporters. Posters pin pointed have shown comments such as these "make this a Jew free world" "Rid the world of the Jews" the hate is there in full force, once again for the umpteenth time they are being "othered" singled out, attacked, blamed, just to be Jewish is to be conflated with whatever the government of Israel is doing. The demonstrations are becoming more and more aggressive in their stance, should they for example be allowed to occupy the concourses of London train terminals, where commuters have to pass through that throng, and if Jewish, I imagine that could be alarming as it was on the tube train recently, when the train driver, who I hope was sacked, decided to initiate a completely inappropriate support Palestine chant amongst commuters on his train. Some of those demonstrating aren't doing it in that passive, dopey way of say Just Stop Oil, it's full on vitriol on the part of some militants, less about support of one faction and more about haranguing our Jewish community. IMO they should not be allowed to occupy areas where the general public have to pass through and the police should do more to arrest those that are overtly committing hate crimes against Jewish people.

In summary, another heartbreaking headline in yesterday's paper from Palestinian Dr Izzeldin Abuelaish "An Israeli shell killed three of my girls, but hate will only prolong the horror"

I agree Callistemon21 that gorgeous little baby, my heart weeps for him and the other hostages.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 16-Nov-23 16:38:01

Good post Callistemon. You speak for so many of us I’m sure - certainly for me.

merlotgran Thu 16-Nov-23 16:34:33

I told you, but you don't believe me

Did you? Where?

Fleurpepper Thu 16-Nov-23 16:02:55

Honestly, where do you dig up these videos, fleurpepper?

I only speak a few words of Hebrew so it was pretty useless really. I can sing the Hatikvah in tune though. 😂

Sorry to make light of such a serious subject but it’s better than tearing my hair out!

I told you, but you don't believe me.

Joseann, I so agree. And it is the very relatives of the hostages who are the hardest critics of Netanyahu, as his actions mean there is little chance they will be released.

To say, as many are here, that criticising Netanyahu's bombing and policies is in denial of what happened on 7th of October, is just so wrong.

Callistemon21 Thu 16-Nov-23 15:57:31

Joseann

I'll start criticising Netanyahu once the Jewish hostages are released. I know that Israel isn't perfect, but I cannot get the atrocities of October 7th out of my mind, however much I try.

All of them but in particular I have that baby's face in my mind all the time.

Yes, I'd like to rescue all the poor children in this conflict but his kidnap seems to symbolise all that is wicked about Hamas.

I’m afraid it’s somehow passed me by. Perhaps it’s for the best.

It is a matter for concern because many of these paedophiles were in positions of trust and influence. They have been convicted and are awaiting sentencing.

However, it has no relevance to this thread at all.

I don’t know about the paedophiles in Scotland and I don’t read the DM Mirror or Mail). Perhaps you could start an informative thread FP.

And no, I don’t believe that Netanyahu’s actions will cause an increase in antisemitism. He doesn’t represent all Jewish people.

Thank for this. Your last sentence is denied by many here, and elsewhere. And those who are calling him out for what he is doing are being silenced and worse. His PR machine is excellent, and I am amazed that it is believed by so many.

The more support him, or refuse to criticise his actions and publicly denounce him- the more the rise.

It was on the news, Germanshepherdsmum
Sickening and I will not start a thread about it.

However, Fleurpepper, if you feel the subject is being neglected and wonder why, then please do start a thread about the Scottish paedophile gang.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 16-Nov-23 15:12:57

With you all the way on that GG.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 16-Nov-23 15:06:12

So no condemnation of Hamas using hospitals as weapons stores and using innocents as human shields.

They took hostages from 9 months to people in their 80’s.

Hamas started this, they knew what Israel’s response would be.

I for one hold Hamas totally responsible for every death in Gaza, West Bank and Israel.

Hamas has an excellent PR machine, and I am amazed that they are believed unquestioned…

Take in food and medicine and THEN kill them.....is this a christian thing or a Israeli one.The poor wee souls on the beds on TV last night .already scarred and injured with no chance of life dont have any concept about who the bad guys are from where I'm standing theres not much to choose between them...if anything .ANYONE who saw these babies and believes its justified because of the October attack should be very ashamed .A Palestinian baby is just as precious as an Israeli baby ....how many more need die before Israel is brought to book by the International community

No more need to die paddyann54 if your beloved Hamas were simply to release the hostages.

Fleurpepper Thu 16-Nov-23 14:41:36

Iam64- yes, I do believe that Islamophobia does increase with any act of terror.

Another gang of the vilest sex predators and peodophiles has been arrested in Scotland. But this does not hit the healines of the front pages of the DM, or GN. I wonder why.

Again, those videos were shared by jewish friends who do speak Hebrew, and who fully understand what was said.

Ok if we follow fleurpepper’s belief that anti semitism will increase because of Netanyahu, do we also accept Islamophobia will increase because of the Taliban, Assad, isis, Hamas etc. no we don’t. We would rightly say that’s wrong
Of course, some posters, including fleurpepper only appear to see wrong in the Israeli government - the despots and terrorises surrounding Israel get a free pass

maddyone Thu 16-Nov-23 14:01:27

I watched the video. No idea when or where it was filmed and no idea what was said as I don’t speak Hebrew.
So not really evidence then.

*Fleurpepper^ You have ignored the footage of IDF taking in medical supplies, fuel, food and water into the hospital.

You have ignored the footage of the tunnels, command centre along with evidence that some of the hostages were incarcerated under the hospital.

Of course she has. Her outright bias is there for all to see.

They released a 'Concept Paper' outlining a plan to transfer the 2.3 million inhabitants of Gaza to the Sinai desert. There are no other words for this other than ethnic cleansing. The bigger question is how much of a bribe will Egypt's President Sisi need to finally acquiesce to this plan.

Nothing, but nothing, puts Jews all over the world more at risk than this- and the videos posted. Saying this is NOT antisemite, au contraire.

The world is turning against what is happening- against Netanyahu and his politicies, illegal settlement and now illegal war for the final grab of the land in Gaza, and eventually the West Bank. The parts of the Jewish community who do not denounce this, will tragically be blamed too, eventually, Inevitable.

Fleurpepper Thu 16-Nov-23 12:16:45

This is very hard to watch- soldiers planting the Israeli flag on the hospital full of dying babies, children and others - like Conquistadors!

And here on a beach in Gaza - listen to what he says. This is not about Hamas, this is about conquest

If only every source corrected its errors!

tickingbird Wed 15-Nov-23 13:49:57

On a slightly different note I have just listened to the BBC apologising for incorrect reporting on the Israeli forces entering the hospital where Hamas have military operations. They reported the IDF were targeting Arabic speakers and medical personnel. They have admitted they should have said the IDF included Arabic speakers and were providing aid to the medical staff.

Makes you wonder what other misinformation is out there but kudos to the beeb for correcting their error.
