Free Speech

The Government claims to be the protector of free speech, with Cabinet ministers regularly railing against “wokery” and cancel culture, and a free speech tsar now in place to guard against academic censorship.

New proposals to broaden the definition of extremism to include those who "undermine" Britain’s institutions and values are interesting then, not least for the degree to which they could stifle legitimate debate.

For Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, in the two decades since the "war on terror", free speech has been eroded to become a privilege given only to our leaders. Yasmin fears she herself could be criminalised under the new definition of extremism:

“Now we learn of government plans to brand as extremist anyone ‘undermining’ Britain’s institutions and values. All dissenters could be criminalised. I, who frequently rail against the monarchy, this government, and the House of Lords, could be classified a 'terrorist'. So would many of my colleagues.

“Liberals are repelled by the vulgar Suella Braverman, but it’s Michael Gove, who is working on these new proposals, we should be wary of. Like Kaa from The Jungle Book, stealthily he moves and coils, and aims for our fundamental rights.”

Where is the proof for all your assertions about what’s going on in Israel Fleurpepper as you are making the sort of statements that are often found to be completely false and doing the rounds of social media.
We all need to be mindful that hamas has a powerful presence on the Internet to spread lies.

Fleurpepper Sun 12-Nov-23 16:50:22

There is currently NO free speech at all in Israel, NONE.

''You can share my posts its really important that people know what's going on. But anonymously would be better, as there is a McCarthy witch hunt going on in Israel. People are being put in prison for expressing the slightest empathy with the Gazen victims.

I am scared if I go back they could arrest me too.''

People opposing Netanyahu are being sacked from jobs, them and family attacked and peaceful elderly protestors beaten black and blue for voicing their opposition to Netanyahu.

Presumably. So completely different country to the incident I was talking about.

So for example one of my most consistent beliefs is for a womans right to choose. I am however horrified that they are arresting pro life people for praying.

You know very well they are not being arrested for praying.

It’s a crazy world when the president of the US might be decided on the abortion issue.
.

DOJ charges 9 anti-abortion protesters, police say 5 fetuses found in one's home

So these are the sort of protesters that Galaxy supports.

Is this the case?

No I support the woman who was praying and received a police apology.
You have made quite an accusation there would you like to retract before I report.

It wasnt the government it was the left unfortunately on the whole. We have to fight for the right of people to express views we hate.

I don't understand the point you're trying to make here, I'm afraid.

I certainly agree with your post at 10.00

ronib Sun 12-Nov-23 10:04:31

I hope Michael Gove is reshuffled right out of government.

Galaxy Sun 12-Nov-23 10:00:36

Well when you give people the right to decide that, you hand over power to the very last people you want to hold power over speech, as is being illustrated by the government.

Yes, but that does not extend to the right to disrupt the lives of others for the extreme views of a tiny minority.

I'm sure it's happened for decades, if not centuries. In fact, I know it has. Governments don't like criticism.

But Gove is looking to extend the definition of 'extremist' and this authoritarian government take 1984 as an instruction manual.

Galaxy Sun 12-Nov-23 09:30:01

Well yes that's been happening for years with those of gender critical views, its way too late to worry about it now.

There is no free speech any more. I wouldn't dare say what I really think about a lot of things. And if I did I would be banned from GN. So I can't speak freely can I?

In many places, you wouldn’t even have the right to post your statement above, implying criticism of the system.

A few weeks ago it was discovered that teachers and teaching assistants who were critical of education policy on social media were having files kept on them by the DfE. This discovery was made because the DfE Ttempted to bar some of the teachers or former teachers who are now independent trainers, from speaking at conferences.

Familiar stuff? Remember the scientist early this year who the government insisted should be 'disinvited' from speaking at a conference because he had posted mildly critical views of the government on social media.

While this by no means says that people no longer have the 'right' to criticise the system there is something ver worrying about it. The story that Gove plans to tighten the legal definition of 'extremism' (which already includes 'left wing views') should have us deeply fearful of the next move.

growstuff Sat 11-Nov-23 21:01:49

So what is your opinion of what she's saying?

Certainly not if you go outside of the parameters of the law.

So think “time, place and manner” and so hate speech, incitement, ruining someone’s reputation, fraud etc is not allowed

MN are also a social networking site that is entitled to place restrictions on speech as they deem appropriate - which has nothing to do with the law but everything to ensuring the smooth running of the social intercourse taking place.

I think that a number of the posts here reflect what the posters think of the individual rather than the importance of being free to be critical
