Michelle Mone has finally admitted she lied about the tens of millions of pounds profit they stand to make from their shameful PPE deal

She said her life had been "destroyed" by allegations about their PPE profits, even though "we've only done one thing, which was lie to the press to say we weren't involved".

She remains adamant they did nothing wrong and lying to the media isn’t a crime. Baroness Mone is also under investigation by the House of Lords for failing to declare an interest in PPE Medpro.

A truly odious pair of money grabbers who are now expecting sympathy for their plight.

PPE: I am not sure that the manufacturer - the Baroness's husband is entirely at fault here. In February 2020 I saw on TV Chinese people wearing masks. With experience, that alarmed me, and being disabled and having a carer, I went on eBay and ordered masks and gloves. I asked some sellers in UK if the masks were CE certified and they said ''We don't need it, we left the EU. THAT WAS WRONG. We were still tied to the EU to 31/12/2020 and until then, we had to conform to EU rules, that all things manufactured had to pass EU certification, Everything. I also subscribed to the Government daily update emails, which are still being sent out.

During the first week of the pandemic, one of those emails said that it was illegal to make, sell or give away PPE which did not have the CE label. If non-certified PPE was used, the NHS could be sued for cross contamination, whether right or not.

Hospital Trust managers failed to maintain stocks of PPE for emergency. Local Authority Emergency Planning Committees were the same. Britain did not have enough PPE, and now, we could not get them, because Europe was keeping their stocks for themselves. You cannot blame them.

I can only surmise the civil servants advising the Minister of Health did not know that we still belonged to the EU and that it was illegal to manufacture PPE in this country until 2021.

The Government acted illegally by contracting with any manufacturer to make PPE in UK in 2020, because no manufacture was able to certify it with the CE logo. It takes months if not years to be in a position to make them.

They should never have placed the contracts in the first place, according to the directive given to everyone in the daily covid emails. The manufacturer should have known that we were still bound by EU rules that said we cannot make PPE to EU standards. eBay got the message right away, and sales of non-certified PPE were withdrawn from sale on that site. Fortunately I had already ordered mine, which had been dispatched. Residential Care Homes were not so fortunate.

The Government commandeered all the UK stocks of PPE for the NHS, and nothing certified was available to care home staff, which is why thousands died. Not until 2021 when we were no longer bound by EU law, did anyone have masks, and only then because someone called them 'face coverings'. Think how many lives could have been saved if they were so named in 2020.

Most of the blame must go to the Government for signing contracts in the first place. The fact that they chose the company of a Member of the House of Lord's husband, is really a minor part of the scandal. Not all manufacturers were away of the CE labels, but ignorance of the law is not a defence. The Baroness might not have known, because we now know that the civil servants did not pass on the vital knowledge to MPs that we were still part of the EU until much later. True, the buck stops at the Government ministers, and they should have known. Certainly the civil service knew, because they issued that covid update email in March 2020.

A truly despicable woman.

The sheer greed of MM and her husband makes me want to vomit. How much money do they need? Fabulously wealthy but still so grasping and selfish they would deceive and lie to accumulate more cash? Don't know how they sleep at night.

Jess20 Mon 18-Dec-23 13:24:18

Just a thought.... Reading this after writing to my MP about the new government powers to snoop on our bank accounts if we receive state pensions - not needing either our consent or even knowledge.... So I guess MM knows the best places to keep cash safe and secure and a trust of some sort at a bank in the Isle of Man might be a good place to get our state pensions paid in future...?

They were sadly mistaken if they thought their interview was going to garner sympathy and understanding for their self inflicted predicament. It’s had the opposite effect and they are now deservedly being hung out to dry in every radio and tv discussion I’ve heard in the past 24 hours. I heard it said this morning that someone has finally trumped Prince Andrew in the most damaging interview stakes.

The interview was grim. But I did laugh out loud when she said their decision to offer their services during the height of the pandemic was in response to “a call to arms to all lords and baronesses” 😆

She appears to be so wrapped up in her wealth and delusions of grandeur that she really believes they’ve done nothing wrong.

Is Michelle Mone related to Captain Tom’s daughter? They seem to have a lot in common…

deedeedum Mon 18-Dec-23 12:57:45

As a peer of the realm can she be stripped of her "title" because she lied for whatever reason.

Mone and her husband should be made to put the 60m they made into the nhs

Cossy Mon 18-Dec-23 12:19:52

They both, along with many other influential people who’ve profited from tax payers money being misappropriated, utterly disgust me, they should ALL feel the full force of the law! Sadly I think this will never happen in our current climate of it (seemingly) being OK to swear, lie and cheat in Parliament!

Mojack26 Mon 18-Dec-23 12:15:50

Throw the weight of the law at them! Profiteering in a national crisis! Is that not illegal? Like in WW2....They should be made to pay the 60million? back. Totally immoral and disrespectful, to all of UK,if nothing else. She should also lose her peerage! I'm just disgusted and even more so as she is a fellow Scot. A downright embarrassment

red1 Mon 18-Dec-23 11:54:18

I heard they are no longer members of the tories, What!?
the whole thing highlights the corruption that goes on in high places, now lets lock up those disabled who are not able to work, the whole thing is disgusting, words really fail me.

polnan Mon 18-Dec-23 11:47:03

lying to the press? I see it as lying to us, the taxpayer,

Babamaman Mon 18-Dec-23 11:47:01

Michelle Mone receives more in a day for being in the Lords than I receive in a month for my pension!
It is pure greed ! Just how much do these reprobates need ? They make me feel sick.
They charged us over £300million for a product that was useless but still pocketed £60million for themselves now in a trust offshore in the Isle of Man!
They must refund every penny !
Totally disgraceful
Remove her title ! Kick her out of the lords!
How low can people get - unbelievable

Now that The Crown is coming to an end, Netflix should commission the Michelle Mone story. Call it Lying is not a crime.

Great idea. I’m sure Brasso would sponsor the series as this couple must go through gallons of the stuff to rub daily on their brass necks.

spabbygirl Mon 18-Dec-23 11:40:27

its sickening isn't it? How she can not see that photos of her on her yacht that we guess is paid for with our money is not going to get us riled I can't see, that she then expects sympathy for how her life has been 'ruined' is beyond me. I suspect the Tories will do their usual deal with billionaires, 'pay back 5% and we'll say no more about it,' sort of thing. Rachel Reeves is eager to get after the lot of them and I can't wait!!

BigBertha1 Mon 18-Dec-23 11:33:56

Witzend I'll sit down beside you.

This is the kind of case for which asset sequestration was introduced. What a loathsome pair

Maizie The 30% wasn't even a return on investment.

I know that. grin. Makes it worse, doesn't it...

Though I wonder how Medpro paid for the dodgy PPE in the first place. Had the govt already paid them, or did persons unknown fund it?

MaizieD Mon 18-Dec-23 09:59:29

The £60+million which Mone & Barrow collected from Medpro for their part in the deal represents about a 30% net profit from the £200million contract. Does anyone think that this is a reasonable return?

I am curious about this as I don't think that people investing through a 'normal' route, e.g shares or bonds, would expect a return of anything like that. But perhaps businesses are different from private investors...

Grantanow Mon 18-Dec-23 09:33:45

It's a scandal.

Fleurpepper Sun 17-Dec-23 22:00:53

No fan of Laura K, but she didn't show them much sympathy in her interview.

What is the Legal situation re re-paying, and having to cover cost of proper legal destruction of useless PPE. They say that the money cannot be refunded as it has been put in a Trust Fund on Isle of Man. But surely the Government can order the money to be repaid from their own fortune, and for them to pay for destruction.

Awful, nasty, despicable people.
