I saw the Queen of Norway in London once - at an art gallery.

Yes the Tsar was let down by George Vth, but the circumstances evolved to such an extent that had the family been able to leave earlier then all might have been ok, but the young people contracted Measles and were unable to travel. By the time they could, not only had their situation become much more difficult, revolution in this country was also very real threat, so the sheltering of a fallen imperial family became politically impossible. Their imprisonment and subsequent murder apparently haunted George Vth for the rest of his life. Other members of the I.F did manage to escape, the Tsars mother was taken to Malta on a British warship, then she moved along with others to Paris.

The revelation that the former king of Belgium had fathered an illegitimate child is probably the most exciting story that’s ever come out of Belgium.

Monarchy in UK/ other countries is covered by British press, some people don't read those tidbits. I listen/read for economical/world news and generally easily pass on Royals faffing around.

However Royal 'news' exists. Or it does on GN.

For example, the story about Queen Margaret of Denmark abdicating hasn't even been mentioned here on Gransnet.

She is a great gal (apart from the smoking) and was a very close friend to our late Queen. The fact that she has now handed over the sceptre - surprising everyone - may prompt Charles to think about it, too. In fact, I think I may have seen a tentative report somewhere that he plans to stand down when he is 80.

Anyway, I am often astounded to hear that British people don't even realise that Belgium (for example) has a monarchy, as do all the Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands, and now (again) Spain.

These people are colourful and interesting.

Granted, they do not have the position that the British monarchy has, but they are there. The yellow press, which is most popular in countries such as Germany, where I live, i.e. republics, is all over them and loves the pomp and ceremony and, of course the scandals.

The British are always saying "No one does spectacular ceremonies like we do" and yet they can't even name any European royals, or say which countries have any.

Anyway, if you are interested in royal events (and I know many here aren't, and think they should be abolished altogether, which is also a justifiable argument), there will be a coronation in Denmark soon.

I'll be interested to see if it's even mentioned on any British news channels.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a staunchly patriotic Brit, but I do wish that when Brits say "We're the best in the world at...", they would take a look at the world first. There is other stuff out here in the rest of the world, you know.

Sorry but you're wrong on that score. We British, certainly the older generation will be aware, taught in history at school, the marriages between foreign and British monarchy. From the beginning of our history really. Always fascinated me, think of the Czar of Russia, unfortunately let down badly by the then King and his Gov.
A blanket no one knows anything, maybe the younger generatio , is rather rude.

No I don't think Camilla will even think about encouraging HM to abdicate. It simply isn't an option with the British RF. As for not having a Queen! What's so strange in that? Discounting Matilda and Jane Grey there have only been six Queens in 1000 years and one of those had to share with her husband! ( A one off arrangement, William of Orange and Mary 11nd) ref: The Glorious Revolution 1688. Baring accidents the next two monarchs will be Kings.

If the OP doesn’t know that the abdication of Queen Margrethe (not Margaret) has been well-covered in the UK press and that there will be a proclamation instead of a coronation, then I’d suggest they are as out of touch with current affairs as the Brits are accused of being.

Queen Margrethe’s abdication means there is no longer a queen on a throne anywhere in the world. That seems strange to me*, so used to having a queen as HoS. Now Queen Elizabeth is gone I am not sure how long the British monarchy will last. I feel that in time it will gradually fade away and became lower key like other European monarchies.

*As a child, our family doctor was a woman. It seemed odd to me to see a male locum doctor, on the rare occasions she was away on holiday!

I think most of us, particularly on here are well aware of other European monarchies including Scandinavian ones. Some of us are even aware of monarchies further a field, ie Nepal and Thailand! Queen Margarethes abdication has been well reported in this country as was the abdication of Queen Beatrice of the Netherlands, in favour of her son. No, I don't think K. Charles will abdicate, it's just something our monarch doesn't do. Like the late Queen, more and more will be handed over to P.W and that's what it will be. In 1.000 years we have only had one voluntary abdication, yes kings have been deposed, but not voluntarily except for Edward V111th. So I don't think K.C will be about to alter that . George 111rd in old age (and before) was completely incapacitated, but remained King until he died.

I'm aware of other royal families across the globe just because I like to keep up with general knowledge. Mostly all of them have their scandals and "soap operas".

I wonder if Camilla will persuade Charles to abdicate after a few years. She doesn't have his stamina.

I think it has got a fair bit of coverage in our press. I'm vaguely aware of members of European royal families, although lately my awareness has been raised by a certain Prince Carl Philip of Sweden simply because he's just so good looking

The Spanish monarchy is often is in the news, mainly for the dubious behaviour of their abdicated King Juan and now the alleged adultery of the current King's wife, as is the Belgian where the King there, has been involved in a paternity case. paternity has now been proved and his daughter is claiming royal rights.

I am no royalty follower, everything i have read I have seen on standard news sites and national newspapers.

I think he will let William and Catherine do more and more as time goes by, as he is obviously no spring chicken.

Perhaps that’s why our Monarchy is different to the rest of Europe. It’s not a job to retire from, or step down from.

It’s a lifelong commitment to duty and service, which the late Queen embodied.

We were away on holiday when it was the late Queen’s funeral, and we had a very interesting chat with some Danes on the ferry home (as we were queuing for a meal), about our respective Royal families.

They were very proud that their Queen was the only one left now.

I think that abdication is an abhorrent word to our Royal Family after Edward VIII left his brother to take on the job for which he was not really prepared.

However, I agree that it would be the sensible option.

The news was reported on the BBC and no doubt we'll see news of the coronation too.

Magazines in Australia always had photos and articles about Crown Prince Mary, their own Princess 🙂 She is very popular

Personally I think they purposly keep a lower profile more than our Royal family
I wish the pomp and circumstance we do so well was not based on the Royal family but more on the country traditions and history then we could have a quieter slimmed down royal family that didn’t cost so blooming much

I’m often amazed at how much print is given in the DM for example, to our RF - and the RF’s of other countries. I look on line and see pages, often comparing and contracting the way the various women dress.

I've done this as well and saw a very long article comparing the New Queen Mary with the Princess Royal.Pages and pages of nothing except conjecture.

I agree with you Jackie. Other Royal families are available but ignorance about them seems to be bliss. Charles is certainly allowing William to be involved Royal duties in preparation for him to take over. Good for him if he is considering retirement at some point.

It's weird, isn't it, how some royal families seem to steal the limelight whereas others go almost unnoticed? I was in Vienna this time last year and there was so much information and talk regarding the Habsburg family, whereas this week while in Amsterdam, the Royal Family isn't mentioned anywhere. Is there one? .... Joke!)

Anyway, back to your OP, quite frankly I waste too much time reading about the scandals of our own royal family to fit in another one! Though for some reason the Grimaldis always attract my attention.
