People obviously remember what the US was like under Trump, before Biden destroyed it.

Galaxy Thu 25-Jan-24 12:36:43

The second one is interesting. Most governments suppressed individual rights during covid.

Outof interest I looked up the definition of fascism. Most described it as a government that dispenses with democracy but this definition was the one that I think of as fascism
Which sentences identify two characteristics of fascism?
Here are two sentences that identify characteristics of fascism: 1. Fascism is characterized by extreme nationalism and the belief that one's country is superior to all others. 2. Fascist governments often suppress individual rights and freedoms in the name of national unity and security.30 Jun 2021

Thank you for enlightening us, Urmstongran. I read it as a generalisation rather than directed at you so the personal aspect didn't occur to me as a reason for complaint.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 25-Jan-24 12:15:07

I expect it did. I’m sure I would have made the same assumption and felt hurt too. You most certainly do not fit cakmib’s description and hopefully she just meant to refer to US voters. I ‘know’ you well enough to know that you are neither racist nor fascist.

Urmstongran Thu 25-Jan-24 12:06:57

Thank you GSM.
Your post about my character means a lot to me. I suppose because I’m one of the few on here who endorse Trump I assumed cakmib had directed her comment to me personally. It hurt.

MayBee70 Thu 25-Jan-24 11:19:57

There is one thing in Bidens favour, though, and that, at a time when so many awful things are happening in the world, is experience. Given that the Democrats seem to be determined to keep him they need to find a young and dynamic person to be vice president. Harris doesn’t seem to be very popular.

Luckygirl3 Thu 25-Jan-24 11:10:31

If only there were a credible alternative to Biden. This is the reason Trump is gaining traction.

The concept of decent moral human beings running countries is rapidly vanishing. It is very worrying.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 25-Jan-24 10:21:44

I disagree. Urms has said she supports Trump, therefore she is right to feel that she is one of the people caknib referred to in her very sweeping statement, though I would like to think the statement was intended to refer to those who vote for Trump. I think many who will vote for Trump do fit that description. I hasten to add that we know Urms does not.

DaisyAnneReturns Thu 25-Jan-24 10:12:46

Sorry that should be cakmib's

DaisyAnneReturns Thu 25-Jan-24 10:09:12

This would be the logic needed to make caknib's comment a problem:

Donkeys eat carrots
John eats carrots
Therefore John is a donkey

Urmstongran has no need to apologise for anything whatsoever, LondonMcFitz

I don't agree with her but she's entitled to say what she thinks within GN guidelines.

I agree - we are all entitle to have our say.

Galaxy Thu 25-Jan-24 10:01:55

It also alienates the people who are 'on your side' so to speak.

Galaxy Thu 25-Jan-24 10:01:17

It's a pointless strategy though and will be part of the reasons Trump wins if he does.

DaisyAnneReturns Thu 25-Jan-24 09:58:07

Because Urms has expressed support for Trump?

The problem with using broad generalisations is that people can easily misunderstand the actual meaning or, heaven forfend, deliberately do so. For the sake of the unlogical, saying someone appeals to people with a particular characteristic does not mean that all appealed to share that characteristic although, in some cases, obviously they may.

Galaxy Thu 25-Jan-24 09:55:47

Good God has someone on the internet just changed their mindgrin. Thanks caknib for saying that.

caknib Thu 25-Jan-24 09:52:15

I suppose when someone is hard line right wing they are teetering towards fascism, but on reflection it is too easy to trot out.

The other stands though.

Galaxy Thu 25-Jan-24 09:37:26

I wouldnt report mainly because I dont think guidelines have been broken. I mostly hear the word facist to describe left leaning older women these days, so the term itself when used on the internet has very little meaning to me anymore.
However I think describing large groups of voters in derogatory ways is counter productive to say the least.

Oh let's cut to the chase. Trump appeals to fascists and racists.

I did contemplate reporting your post.
Then I thought ‘no, let it stand’. I shall just enjoy my mug of Horlicks instead and treat that post instead with the contempt it deserves.

On what grounds would you report it? Genuinely interested!

So am I.

Emperor’s new clothes’ism?

Trump promised a lot of things. Did he actually deliver on any of them? The wall for example?

Perhaps you could look it up. There are videos to watch were he tells reporters what he did. I looked out of curiosity.

I thought some of the American gransnetters would be able to tell me. I wouldn’t believe anything he said he’d achieved.

cakmib Wed 24-Jan-24 22:12:35

Really? I don't recall any names being mentioned.

Freya5 yes it is very insulting.
It does beg the question though as to how personnel will be selected in the future. I can’t understand how anyone could say that a white pilot is useless. In what way are they useless? Do they have any evidence of incompetence or is it just a sad sign of the times?

A sad sign of the times unfortunately.

Pleased to say the RAF were found to have unlawfully discriminated in their plan to boost diversity. 31 men were paid compensation. Wether they chose to continue to work in a career were they were made to feel inadequate, I can't find.
