As some of us predicted. 😆

Thank heavens the Lords have respect for the Rule of Law and the International reputation of the UK.

Incidentally, as many others do, I support a second house and thought needs reviewing our HoL holds our govts, of any persuasion, to account and has powers of veto. Some in there are ex/PMs and MPs from all political persuasions and have huge amounts of political experience and vision, some members are actually quite normal people who have been “honoured” for services in their own fields or charitable work, they bring with them a wealth of knowledge at many different levels and despite what many you feel and think the HoL isn’t just full of entitled “la di das” do a bit of digging and research and you’ll see what they actually do and who actually sits in there.

This government has wasted so much time and money on this plan, which was never a good idea in the first place.
Just shut the door to migrants, don't accept any more applications for asylum. That is all they need to do.
Send them back to France and let the French deal with the problem.

Please try to understand that sending would-be immigrants back to whichever country they came from will not solve the problem.

No European country can possibly absorb all the immigrants fleeing from climate change, famine or wars any more than the UK can.

Some might just be able to, if the immigrants were prepared to take the jobs offered them. France is in need of agricultural workers and craftsmen prepared to live and work in small villages and towns, but a certain amount of immigrants will not consider this, and try desperately to find accommodation and work either in large cities or in another country.
Great Britain is still really the only place you can go from the north of France, after all, if you turn down the French offers, as Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy already have all the immigrants they can take.

Germany and Scandinavia are reaching saturation point fast too, quite apart from the fact that a lot of the immigrants are not prepared to try to learn our languages, which rather decreases their potential usefulness in any country.

Shipping these poor people off to Rwanda is and always was an indecent proposal - and you do not need to remind me that Denmark wanted to do the same. I know that. Fortunately EU and the International court in Den Haag vetoed that idea. As far as I remember Britain was also told by the international court that it was no go, but apparently is taking no notice.

As far as I can see, the only solution is for right-minded ccitizens everywhere to demand that politicians re-discover ethical and moral values and abide by them.

Also migrants are not to blame for our poor (compared to other EU countries) state pension!

So what do you all suggest as a deterrent for the migrants ? This isn’t an aggressive comment it’s just this country is broken and we can’t take on anymore until we fix but , we pay billions in foreign aid to countries who are spending money to go into space whilst our country can’t even fix a pothole . We should keep the foreign aid but perhaps give it to the countries that these migrants are coming from. For a small country we also take a lot of legal migrants , for instance many who come over here to study are allowed to bring up to six dependants surely that is not right ? In my area we are just about to house asylum seekers in high end apartments whilst the homeless list is huge and a lot of local people are living in squalid social housing something needs to be done

ASK THE GOVT! They’ve had 14 years to fix this and both legitimately entering and illegally entering migrant number have steadily risen year on year.

Please remember those entering illegally make up less than 1% of our population and are not to blame for every woe this country faces, including homelessness, they are a great diversion for failing local and central government!

Cossy Fri 26-Jan-24 15:17:44

Woop Woop is my first reaction, but let’s not celebrate too soon. Whilst I completely agree migration needs reviewing, small boats need to be stopped (they are dangerous), traffickers need to be stopped, but imo the Rwanda issue penalises people who appear unable to enter via the “correct” channel as every year this govt has made this harder and harder. I object to the Rwanda scheme as (imo) it goes against the “spirit” of asylum and their record in human rights is hardly glowing!

I wonder if the scheme is scuppered totally if Rwanda will refund our money, or like the French, simply laugh all the way to the bank with ÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁM of taxpayers cash!

Frankly it matters not a lot - the Rwanda policy will never work. It is a dead duck that simply won’t lay down.

Whether you agree with this particular bill or not, I don't find it a great thing that these unelected peers can hold up or veto anything.

Exactly. I totally agree. They are unelected!! That’s not democracy

Whether you think the Lords are democratic or not, they have been the only element in Parliament, since at least 2019, which have had a restraining influence on this government which has been trying hard to take power away from the real Legislative body, which is the House of Commons and the House of Lords. It is NOT the government.

There would be a riot if they tried to get rid if the HOL!! Where else can they walk in, sign their name, walk out and collect ÂŁ300 every time?

Well quite! I would go one day a week to collect more than my pension, have a snooze in the warm and some subsidised food.
In what other country could you invade illegally and be put in a hotel at taxpayers expense, while pensioners on a basic pension and pension credit struggle to keep warm and have to go to food banks.

The great cheerleader for democracy, Farage, has said that the entire membership of the HoL should be sacked 😀.

I agree with Farage.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 26-Jan-24 12:52:34

I see that the government has been told that they will be breaking international law if they pursue Rwanda.

Homesickforscotland Fri 26-Jan-24 12:48:35

Disgraceful they have not been voted for. Just previous prime ministers cronies

The Rwanda scheme smacks of desperation. The government must be seen to be addressing the issue of immigration. After all it played a big part in the referendum and 'stop the boats' is one of the PM's five pledges.

I read or heard that Rwanda was initially part of Johnson’s operation save big dog

Cold Tue 23-Jan-24 16:09:01

The whole Rwanda plan is just a calculated vote grab - a headline grabbing sticking plaster that will only house 200 per year

It would be cheaper to buy each of these refugees a house in the UK than pay Rwanda ÂŁ300-400 million to take 200 refugees a year ... which works our at ÂŁ300,000-400,000 each

MayBee70 Tue 23-Jan-24 15:55:33

What makes me sick is the government saying the Rwanda scheme is because they’re so worried about people dying in the channel whereas what they’re really doing it for is to harness the racist vote in this country.

Kandinsky Tue 23-Jan-24 15:46:39

Doesn’t matter how much you try and back track, some of you find this subject amusing.
Doesn’t matter whether you’re laughing at our PM or Nigel Farage, the fact is you’re laughing at the situation.
Maybe you should have a bit more compassion. I know not everyone is great on chat forums and often don’t realize how they come across. But smiling emojis on a subject like this is pretty sick.

Siope Tue 23-Jan-24 15:16:31

I laugh at Farage for not understanding the function of an upper house.
