Emergency Aid To Gaza Halted Because Israel Says So?

Israel claims that UN aid workers were involved in the October 7 attack and - without any independent proof - UN suspends aid with immediate effect.
Why? Does Netanyahu - an unbalanced individual at best - have so much influence on the United Nations, an organisation which has proved itself fairly useless down the decades?

The agency is supporting 5 million displaced persons. What is going to happen to them?

Frankly I’d be astounded if there were no UNWRA employees supporters of Hamas. It is naive in the extreme to assume otherwise, and I’m sure that state leaders know this.

However as I said once we can get through the cloud of propaganda and work out exactly what is happening in my view it is not particularly clever to cease funding.

They cut off aid because of 2 people.. it's so similar to feeling justified killing over 30.000 in revenge for less that 200.. It is a really evil way of resolving such complex issues and will rapidly descend into a much greater disaster unfortunately.

Its larger than that, it means peoples faith in the UN has broken down, that's not a great place to be either.

I agree.

UNWRA is not the only UN agency to have been embroiled in scandals. The fact that the UN has sacked some staff suggests the Israeli allegations are credible to the UN. If aid has been siphoned off to support HAMAS and some of its fat cats and their fancy villas that is a disgrace.

Yes the tunnels were initiated by Israel, and Hamas made use of them when Israel withdrew their military.

So where did the money come from to build those amazing tunnels, and let’s not forget arms.

I thought that Israel had actually built some of them?

The oil rich Arab states have the option of increasing their contribution to make up the shortfall?

Yes, that is always an option.

For goodness sake Hamas is the government in Gaza was everybody so out of touch that they did not realize, that Hamas kept order and directed aid. It also took what it wanted to supply its fighters, Palestinians either do what Hamas tells them to or they starve.

Yes. If you want to judge the level of support for Hamas - it only has about 20k members.

Tiny considering its power. That tells us all we need to know about Palestinian support.

US, Canada, U.K, Australia, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, Netherlands along with Finland have all suspended financial aid to UNWRA, they must have pretty good reasons and evidence to do so.

maddyone Tue 30-Jan-24 08:21:35

But apparently it’s nine other countries as well, so that probably amounts to rather large beer.
Gaza needs the aid desperately, but I can understand why countries don’t want to be seen to be financing terrorism on the scale that has been alleged.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 30-Jan-24 08:08:17

Spend some of that aid in helping our own people off the streets. Only send the aid if it goes to those that need it. I am disgusted at Netanyaha, he doesn't see Palestinians as people.

Don’t worry, what the U.K. sends is pretty small beer.

23% of male UNWRA workers in Gaza are accused of being actively involved with Hamas, including taking part in 7/10 and housing hostages.

There are 12,000 employees of UNWRA in Gaza.

It’s a decision not taken lightly as there is a desperate need for aid, but and it’s a big but I cannot condone aid being syphoned off to Hamas.

There is little surprise that large number of Hamas supporters are involved, if only to keep order and distribute food and you can be sure that their families get food aid.

You have to support any ruling group if you want food, that’s true in any conflict.

Israel has said one thing and done another, they have been consistent in their inconsistency. It's clear that Gaza is virtually uninhabitable and this action fits in with that. When the crossing is open the survivors will flee. Then what?

They would be silly to send aid that doesn’t get through but I hope they can sort it out quickly. What a horrible mess.

In many/most aid situations the price of allowing aid in is that the rebel faction eg- Hamas gets a share.

Nothing new or surprising in that!.

I didn’t know anything about this. I know about the allegations of UN personnel being involved in the depraved crimes on 7/10 but I didn’t know anything about the UK and other countries pausing aid. It probably won’t be for long, but countries will want assurances that their money is not being used to fund terrorism. Sounds fairly reasonable to me whilst it’s looked into.

Katie59 Tue 30-Jan-24 06:36:25

Seems accusations were credible

UN sacks those allegedly implicated

The New York Times’s report came after Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary General, said on Sunday he was horrified by Israel’s allegations, adding that nine of the 12 employees identified as being involved with Hamas had been sacked.

One was dead and the identities of the other two were being clarified, he added.

At least nine countries, including the US, UK and Germany, have paused funding for UNRWA in response to the Israeli allegations.

Whitewavemwrk2 in another thread you acknowledged the
allegations were true

I must get back to sleep!😀. I think what I said was that caution must be exercised given the fact that we are relying on Israel for the information.

I have no evidence to say that it isn’t true, but I do have the ability to recognise that in war propaganda is a tool usefully employed on all sides.

Netanyahu needs to up his game with regard to the propaganda war as he has certainly been losing support throughout the world, and this is certainly something he is employing in the hope of getting back that support.

Israel is unfortunate in its leader.

Palestinians are even more unfortunate in their choice of leaders.
