'There will be no non-tariffs barriers to trade’ stated Johnson boldly on 24 Dec 20. Yet to qualify for tariff-free access, however, UK goods need to meet rule-of-origin requirements. The UK and the EU have implemented the agreement at different speeds. The EU immediately applied full checks on UK imports but the UK delayed the introduction of full customs requirements on UK imports from the EU until January 2022, with additional health, safety and security checks delayed until February 2024. These are now coming into play this Thursday 1st February. Despite knowing this had to come into force, there is a marked shortage of inspectors, vets and computer systems. Checks, when achieved, also come at a cost. So Rees-Mogg, what happened to your promise of cheaper (and one assumes, available) food after Brexit??

The question is

Did they lie or was it sheer ignorance. It was certainly pointed out on GN, so I’m assuming they new the truth but simply lied.

They knew the truth but they didn't care because they knew that whatever happened they'd be OK.

I don’t think ‘they’ can have known the truth before negotiations were underway. However, those who voted leave must have someone to blame. I didn’t vote leave and the people I blame are those who did.

Everything that was said about Brexit by the Tories was one big lie!😡

I suspect that the leaders of the Leave campaign knew, but lied, and unfortunately many believed the lies and voted Leave.

Practically speaking, I think there will be a few shortages of fresh foods, at least initially, so I’m planning to top up my freezer, which I’ve been running down this month.
