It was difficult enough to believe what various people in the news said or wrote and with this revelation it's just got even worse. What is the world coming to?

That is shocking, Amazon must withdraw these immediately.

Sadly, I think we can expect far more of this type of publication about all kinds of subjects in the future with the arrival of AI.

They are already here and for sale, books written by AI.
Amazon can’t tell the difference between books written by real living humans and AI.Well, it possibly could by using software designed to test each book, but considering how many thousands of authors are putting books for sale on Amazon it would be a mammoth task.
AI is a problem for authors, artists and musicians going forward.

That’s blackmail surely, tell all or we will!

Quite!

The King should have the right, like anyone else, to give information that he feels comfortable with.

And, if he were to say which type of cancer he had - there would be further speculation on that. Some seem to want to know all the intimate details... sheer idle curiosity, and inrusive.

Farzanah Mon 12-Feb-24 13:32:49

Casdon You are probably right about speculation continuing whatever. Some people are obsessively keen royal watchers and collectors of any snippets about them.
MOnica I know nothing about these so called books, but was just going by lemsip’s post false claims about the king’s health.
I wonder if more people may be curious about such “books” now the Mail has outed them?

I asked ChatGPT as a matter of curiosity, to prepare a talk I was giving recently. It was very inaccurate, but I could have paid for better access ?bigger data base apparently. AI is definitely here to stay and has proved very useful in medicine for example, but obviously has huge implications for abuse too.

It’s a well known and developing phenomena to use AI to generate books, including biographies. Amazon has been flooded with issues, and original authors have already been pursuing legal action. It’s scary.

Well done to the Mail on Sunday for uncovering this
Excellent journalism.

Farzanah AI books have nothing to do wih what the King has or hasn't revealed about his illness.

Even if he was in perfect health, these books, which have no human input but are just a random selection of material gathered indiscriminately online, like shaking plums off a tree, ripe ones, unripe, rotten and shrivelled up, plus leaves twigs would still be published.

I doubt they sell many copies, and they are probably only print on demand, so if no one shows any interest in them they will never exist in published form.

Callistemon21 Sun 11-Feb-24 22:09:44

I don't think he should have to elaborate.

I think there is bound to be, and has been, much speculation about the king’s illness, and I feel great sympathy for anyone going through similar. The sort of “biographies” described are silly, and can’t imagine why anyone would waste money on buying them.

However the king is a public figure and if he was more open about his illness, as he was about his prostate enlargement, it would put an end to the rampant speculation.

I don’t think it would stop speculation. We would the just have endless alternative speculation about how advanced it was, the average survival rate, the risk of recurrence and spread etc. etc. and so it goes on.

Well of course!

It should be possible to utilise AI to identify these books so they can be withdrawn.

Greta Sun 11-Feb-24 15:49:14

Agree, Callistemon21. The future does look scary in so many ways. It seems AI could be used in many areas that could benefit us but unfortunately there is always a dark side.

sodapop Sun 11-Feb-24 15:47:32

That is appalling, Amazon are well placed to root out such publications, hope they are dealt with appropriately.

Absolutely disgraceful. Surely the people responsible, tge sham writers and Amazon should be dealt with and fined appropriately

Disgraceful.

Buckingham Palace last night reacted angrily over the sale of sickening fake books about the King's cancer diagnosis written using artificial intelligence.

In an unprecedented statement, the Palace lambasted the sale of the 'intrusive' and 'insensitive' computer generated books that make false claims about the King's health, adding its lawyers are closely looking at the issue.

It came after an investigation by this newspaper the DM uncovered seven sham biographies being sold by the tech giant Amazon that falsely claim to share exclusive revelations about the King and appear on the site alongside best-selling legitimate royal biographies.
