Should he be allowed to stand for the LP in the Rochdale by-election after his remarks? Apologising doesn’t mean he doesn’t think exactly what he said.

An MP must focus on the community he represents.
Not a fraction of it, or world events that he or she personally have a stake in.
Any bias should be kept in check.
I realise that is not the case for many MPs now though.

Ha ha ha! Try telling that to my MP! I don't think she even knows where her constituency is! hmm

My MP, also a woman, does a lot for the community, sends out a newsletter to inform people, wonder how many people don't bother to read it, then complain she never does anything. Quite a few knowing this town.

Again, I agree with you Dickens. I read all the reports at the time and (although I can't know for sure), I believe that the warnings were there, but not followed up. The conspiracy theory was that the warnings were known about but a decision was made to ignore them to give Israel an excuse for invasion. Maybe Labour has had a lucky escape because Ali doesn't sound like a person with much good judgment.

The Jews have lived in peace in our country since the wars and I think it’s disgusting how they are made to feel in our country by a large majority of ppl who arrived here after them and now are changing our country for the worse. We welcome ppl and it feels like it’s getting kicked back in our faces no good is going to come from this and it’s going to get worse if ppl can’t have free speech without being hounded for their opinions

It doesn't sound as though you're very welcoming of "these people".

Iam64 Wed 14-Feb-24 13:41:41

Free speech is very different than a potential
MP expressing this kind of distorted conspiracy theory as though it’s the truth

Was this intelligence given ? so many links!

I read about it in the Financial Times, the story was published 23rd November and I posted about it then on one of the early Israel threads.

I realise that not everyone can access the FT, but here it is

With free speech comes responsibility, this man in my opinion didn’t exercise any responsibility.

Along with alienating a swathe of his constituency is probably not advisable for a wannabe MP

Glorianny Wed 14-Feb-24 13:19:04

If we are so interested in free speech then surely Azar Ali should be free to express is views on this. Particularly if he thinks these are the views of his community. It isn't acceptable to look at things from a single point of view.
Although Israel does not teach children about the Nakba. A situation which in any other country would be completely unacceptable.

I am shocked that anyone would think that Israel allowed the massacre on On October 7th. Nobody in the normal political parties thinks that this crazy idea is true. I never realised that antisemitic views like that were believed by some Grans.

Anniel, I’m not just shocked by the comments he made I’m absolutely disgusted and anybody who thinks such a thing let alone says is obviously a conspiracy theorist.

Why is it obviously a conspiracy theory? It's far-fetched to think that the Israeli government allowed the attack to go ahead, it's very plausible that the IDF receive warnings all the time, but don't have the resources to act on them.

There's a nuance here that's being missed.

The comments along the lines of "why would Israel allow the massacre of its own people" (etc) don't take into account that those who are questioning why the intelligence passed on to the IDF was ignored (or downplayed) are not making that accusation: Israel would not necessarily know the depths of depravity and barbarity that Hamas was intending, rather simply that there was activity which suggested an attack was imminent.

So those of us questioning why the information / intelligence given to Israel appears to have been ignored, are not accusing Netanyahu of allowing the massacre - at least I'm not anyway.

Which is why Ali's accusation is so abhorrent - because that is what he is accusing Israel of. Without a shred of evidence.

I imagine the warnings and the intelligence of Hamas 'activity' is constant - does the IDF act on all of it... can they even do so? Or do they filter that which is most likely to be a significant threat?

Anyway, just wanted to make it clear that although I believe questions need to be asked - as is always the case after any terrorist attack, anywhere because the sheer horror of it prompts people to ask if it could've been prevented- I am certainly not accusing Israel of allowing the unspeakable massacre of its own people.

Anniebach Wed 14-Feb-24 12:39:32

It is happening in our country, demonstrations in London,
placards ‘From The River To The Sea’ , the police looked on

An MP’s home and family are subjected to such abuse and surely fear , police didn’t do a thing

The Jewish people have been hounded through history. I am angry and saddened to see that this anti semitism is rearing its ugly head so prominently today in a society I used to regard as decent and tolerant. We cannot allow this to happen in our country.

There’s a large Asian/Muslim population in Rochdale - I suspect that most of them will still support Azar Ali’s views and vote for him anyway. The constituency boundaries have changed, meaning that the area (central Rochdale) is predominantly Asian. I can’t imagine George Galloway receiving many votes.

growstuff Wed 14-Feb-24 12:18:43

Sorry, I meant Ali.

Ironically, Louise Ellwood partly supported Khan, saying that he had always supported her when she received anti-semitic abuse.

The political partis - all of them must be more careful how and who they select to represent them! No good saying sorry after they’ve shot their mouths off!
There is so much ant Israeli hatred. It is a minuscule country, the only democratic country in the region.
If Hamas lays down its weapons there will be peace.
If Israel lays down its weapons then there will be no Israel!
Hamas with Irans backing just wants the destruction of Israel! Who will they murder next?
UK?

How realistic is it that Hamas could destroy Israel? And why would Iran want to destroy the UK?

I don't think Israel did see the terrorist attack coming as most people are caught on the hop by terrorism. That's how it works. Many examples. I just wish this country would try and remain more impartial and try and look for non terrorist answers to a very complex problem rather than loudly take sides. Hamas knew Israel would respond like this. This is a War on terrorism we must not forget that. The Geneva Convention of times gone by seems a distant dream. This is the Middle East. Unfathomable.
