Just reported. Only 47. RIP.

Maremia Sun 03-Mar-24 16:32:48

Yes, Sparklefizz, just hope they are released soon.

Casdon Sun 03-Mar-24 09:08:22

I think Navalny would be very gratified to see that his death has caused so much discomfort for the Putin regime. However hard they try to suppress people, there are millions of ordinary Russians who just want normal, peaceful, democratic rule and to be part of the rest of the world. It’s been heartwarming to watch.

Sparklefizz Sun 03-Mar-24 09:06:30

But many are reported to have been arrested! Will we ever hear what has happened to them? I doubt it.

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 03-Mar-24 08:54:29

Amazing to see ordinary Russian people refusing to be cowed.

People are still coming to show their respects Maremia. So good to see these brave people demonstrating their feelings instead of being repressed. Long may it last.

Maremia Fri 01-Mar-24 18:05:05

Thousands outside the church. Terminator 2 theme tune played at the cemetery. I hope there is no repressive come back for those brave people.

It took ages to find a church too apparently.

That's very worrying, when even religious leaders are frightened to give someone a funeral.

Of course, Putin is an Orthodox Christian, isn't he? 🤔
Where is God?

Apparently hearse drivers are refusing to drive the hearse because they are frightened of repercussions.
Putin is orchestrating all this deliberately to show the world just how powerful, and untouchable, he is.
I wonder how much of this the Russian populace knows?

lixy Fri 01-Mar-24 08:20:16

His funeral will be 'some time this morning' - a memorial service is supposed to be at 11 am UK time and will be streamed on his Youtube channel according to the BBC, but who knows what will actually happen.

Grantanow Fri 01-Mar-24 01:03:21

RIP. I wish he had not returned to Russia.

The sooner everyone steps up to the plate and assists Ukraine, especially the USA, the better. Ukraine needs help NOW.

maddyone Wed 28-Feb-24 06:56:42

I saw that too NanKate.
I’m very afraid of what is happening in Europe. Very afraid.

I’ve just read that AN’ s mother’s lawyer has just been arrested. Is no one safe from Putin and his evil government?

They must have enormous prisons to house everyone they have arrested who don’t follow Putin’s rigid rules.

Whaaaat?!

The bloke is seriously unhinged.

(And maybe trying to make up for having a small w1lly)

Apparently negotiations were underway to swap Navalny for a Russian prisoner in a German gaol but Putin was opposed to it. You can bet that the Russian in aa German gaol is being treated very differently to the political prisoners in Russia.

I just watched this, such a moving tribute by the Marsh family, it brought tears to my eyes.

Thank you for adding this, very moving.

I understand that Novichok disappears from the body after about 2 weeks. Can if be a coincidence that that is how long it has taken the Russian authorities to release the body?

Looks to me as if Putin is on steroids for some illness. He has a a classic steroid puffy face.

I understand that Novichok decays to nothing after a week or two. That is why the body is being withheld and, of course, if the body is stored in a mortuary whose cooling system has, unfortunately, broken down, the body will have decayed too much for signs of violence to be recogniseable.

Actually, if the Russians, or rather Putin had any sense, he would simply have had him cremated and returned the ashes to his wife, claiming that as she lives outside Russia, this was the easiest and kindness way to reunite her quickly with her deceased husband.

One of his former aides (now working in America) said some time ago that he was very ill.

flappergirl We do tend to deify our heroes and ignore the uncomfortable truths about them.

However, Navalny opposed Putin and most of what he has done, believed in democracy and when he returned to Russia after being treated for novichok poisoning in Germany, he knew he was walking into the lions den and what would inevitably follow - and it has.

It makes him a complex character, far deeper, and I think darker than popular reaction would have him.

flappergirl Mon 19-Feb-24 21:39:03

Navalny was not opposed to the Ukraine war. Just because he wanted to depose Putin doesn't mean he was any less a Russian patriot. I think posters are confusing certain issues here.

He was also a known white supremacist who famously described Chechnyans as "cockroaches".

That fat faced Putin ( if it is indeed him we see on tv and not a ring in) must have to have tasters for all his food because I am certain someone, somewhere will try to poison the beast. What a horrible, horrible man.

I think that is one of his doppelgangers. Perhaps he's the one who tastes all the food, hence his face becoming puffy.
