Islamaphobia is getting out of control

We have Braverman and Anderson stirring up the most awful Islamaphobia.

I don’t think that we have ever had British MPs saying such racist and hateful rhetoric since Mosely. They are being backed by the worst sort of editorship. It is so redolent of the 20s and 30s.

Jewish and Christian leaders are calling for it to stop, as well as Tories who see this as a disaster for their party, as it will never ever end well.

Rory Stewart

This idea that “London is in the grip of Islamists” is deluded and it’s awful - an obsession that thrives among a bizarre and dangerous coalition. No conservative MP should ever be spouting this stuff.

Your post reflects exactly what people i know say who have attended a protest March.

Gaza has undoubtedly focused millions of peoples attention and protest is happening throughout the world, almost in every country in the world. They are by no means extremist as Braverman would like us to believe.

These right wing tropes - whether directed at Jews or Muslims are age old and we have witnessed these down the years.

‘Bombing of innocent children’ , are the parents not innocent?

How come over double civilian deaths in Gaza than Ukraine !

Callistemon21 Mon 26-Feb-24 11:23:11

I don't care what religion they are, they disrupt.

Go and shout at Speaker's Corner.

Callistemon21 Mon 26-Feb-24 11:22:04

What a load of rubbish.

All protests disrupt the lives of people going about their ordinary business including patients trying to get to hospitals for procedures, operations, treatments, to reach dying relatives.

Sorry but the evidence about the ire attached to this particular demonstration is obvious. I fully accept that some refuse to see it.
But try this
Stop the Oil
Extinction rebellion
May have people complaining about their actions. They may be referred to as yobs, idiots or activists. But no one attributes to them a collective responsibility for anything else. Where as the marches and demonstrations about the Gaza conflict are seen as some sort of Muslim conspiracy.

I know many people who have been on the marches. They are not Muslims. Many of them have been demonstrating and protesting about conditions in Gaza for a long time, some of them are from Stop the War mobilised when there was the Iraq war. Certainly they have been joined by Muslims. But the concept that this is in some way a Muslim protest is entirely wrong. It is in fact an insult to all the decent caring people who have amongst the values they were raised with, the belief that all people matter, and that the bombing of innocent children is not only unacceptable it is an affront to human decency, and a war crime. And there are amongst the marchers Jewish people with exactly those beliefs. None of these people intend harm to anyone. They oppose all oppression.

I help to support The Maggie Oliver Foundation ( the detective in the film)
All the info I get sent shows that it’s still going on.

Yes, you were extremely rude.

The discussion had evolved from a particular march to protests in general.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 26-Feb-24 11:01:26

If however you feel that I have attacked you personally, I am quite happy to apologise as I have a self imposed discipline not to attack anyone at a personal level.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 26-Feb-24 10:59:19

I am saying that your dismissive post of a good person was unkind.

I am no longer interested in discussing this with you as we are so far apart on this there is no longer any point.

Callistemon21 Mon 26-Feb-24 10:59:01

Anniebach

Would I trust anyone who made it known he gives 30% of his income every month to charity ? No

Thanks Anniebach
I am astonished at the personal attack by Whitewave.

Callistemon21 Mon 26-Feb-24 10:58:00

Whitwave: Also saying I am untrustworthy and not dependable?

I think you should retract that personal attack.

You really have gone too far.

Callistemon21 Mon 26-Feb-24 10:55:40

Not a bit unpleasant, Whitewave

Everyone on a protest march has a back story; are you then saying that not all might be kindly gentle people, that in fact some may be violent?

Are you saying I'm unkind?
Is that a personal attack?

Anniebach Mon 26-Feb-24 10:54:49

Whitewavemark2 Mon 26-Feb-24 10:52:36

What I am trying to portray is that people like Braverman who seek to conflate everyone who attends protest marches (because they feel so strongly about genocide or climate) are all extremists - they aren’t and to do so I think makes people unnecessarily fearful.

nanna8 Mon 26-Feb-24 10:52:14

Change the title to ‘AntiSemitism is getting out of control’ and you are nearer the mark.

Is a bit of perspective going to protect those MPs or people trying to walk across Tower Bridge last Saturday?

Whitewavemark2 Mon 26-Feb-24 10:44:04

I do understand the fear, of course I do, but a bit of perspective does no harm.

maddyone Mon 26-Feb-24 10:43:41

I saw on the news this morning that three MPs have had to be given body guards now. Why would that be if the protesters are all peace loving, wouldn’t hurt a fly kind of people?

The MPs weren’t named, probably because of their security.

Callistemon21 Mon 26-Feb-24 10:43:01

Yes, I see and agree, Cossy
I suggested Speaker's Corner in a post above, the right place for proteststo be heard.

maddyone Mon 26-Feb-24 10:41:07

Well people were deliberately blocking Tower Bridge and letting off flares and singing From the River to the Sea on Saturday. What does your quiet, self effacing, kindly friend think about that?

Cossy Mon 26-Feb-24 10:38:39

Callistemon21

Unlike some people I don’t confuse ISIS and Islam, just like I don’t consider all Germans to be Nazi, all Irish to be IRA etc etc.

Cossy
So what are you saying? That the violent protestors on the streets (and I am aware that not all are violent), those intimidating MPs and Jewish people, are all members of ISIS?

No but I think anyone who resorts to violent protest, for any reason, in our Country, is probably an extremist and therefore not to be encouraged.

I’m a great supporter of peaceful protest, whether I agree with those protesting or not, I do not think protesting should scare people, everyone is entitled to go about their own business, members of the public and MPs.

Callistemon21 Mon 26-Feb-24 10:37:46

I have a friend whose husband goes regularly, and you couldn’t meet a more self effacing, kindly man, who tends his garden and watches birds
How lovely.

I expect they're all like that.
