Islamaphobia is getting out of control

We have Braverman and Anderson stirring up the most awful Islamaphobia.

I don’t think that we have ever had British MPs saying such racist and hateful rhetoric since Mosely. They are being backed by the worst sort of editorship. It is so redolent of the 20s and 30s.

Jewish and Christian leaders are calling for it to stop, as well as Tories who see this as a disaster for their party, as it will never ever end well.

Rory Stewart

This idea that “London is in the grip of Islamists” is deluded and it’s awful - an obsession that thrives among a bizarre and dangerous coalition. No conservative MP should ever be spouting this stuff.

Glorrianny do stop twisting things, Rachel Reeves was canvassing for the Labour Party, a group of women followed her demanding she speak to them, she was working, she asked if they were from her constituency, reply - ‘no, I am a Muslim,
a tax payer , I live in this country’ , Rachel tried to speak to them. They followed her until she had to get in her car,

I am beginning to feel so sorry for the moderate members of the Tory party.

Has anyone heard Truss lately!!

They are like Peter - trying to shore up the dam that is sure to burst with all the hate of the U.K.

I hope now that those in power will think twice before appointing any more muslims into public office. They use their position to further their own causes.
I was actually watching gbnews when Lee Anderson spoke and I think he worded it badly. It isn't true that Khan is in the hands of Islamists, but there is no doubt that he is abusing the position he has to promote Islamist causes.

Historically many people used to think this about Catholics. Thankfully most of us moved on.

After World War 2 ? Doesn’t surprise me, though I still maintain there are people who do not tell the ‘authorities’.

“As far as Islam goes I think the most shocking thing is the way all Muslims are generally grouped together. With people saying "Muslims do this" or ""Muslims threaten an MP" when in fact a small group of women met an MP, and one of them pursued her, asking questions. I can't think of any other group who would be spoken of in such a way. Not Jewish women, not black women, not Christian women. That's the real problem with racism, the insidious way it creeps in and statements are accepted. So people become secondary to the group they are considered to belong to.
Any MP of any party attributing such behaviour to any group of people should be deselected and if the party doesn't do it, their constituents should think very hard about voting for them again.”

I could not agree more Glorianny 😊

That is an interesting link Cossy. It shows how small the Jewish population is here, and worldwide.

I was very surprised!

Glorianny Sat 24-Feb-24 11:04:04

There is a large and obviously Jewish community close to where I live. It has the largest Yeshiva in Europe (it used to claim outside Israel but was challenged by one in the USA). They live quiet and strictly regulated lives accepted by the local people.Students come from all over the world to study there, so it is seen as a safe place to come to. I hope other places are as safe.

Incredibly small nanna8, less than 300,000 here in Britain, as a percentage of the overall population infinitesimal.

Labour hearing on antisemitism

nanna8 Sat 24-Feb-24 10:31:18

Is the Jewish community that small? Or is it because the Jewish people don’t always want to let people know they are Jewish because they fear persecution and discrimination?

Casdon Sat 24-Feb-24 10:20:26

Quote TerriBull
‘As others have identified there are racists on both sides of the political divide, possibly once a preserve of the far right, the extreme left are equally culpable of whipping up hatred although they would have us believe they are merely fighting the good fight’
That’s true. However Politicians in elected positions should never display rascism, and if they do they should be sanctioned immediately. Who their rascism is against is irrelevant.

I think there's a certain amount of evidence to support that opinion Annie. although I do think that racism also feeds into Muslim attacks, young women having had their scarves pulled off by yobbos for example. However, it's no coincidence they increase in the aftermath of bomb attacks. Of course that isn't fair to conflate the actions of a few with the wider Muslim community. I also perceive a lot of anger came to the fore in the treatment of the young girls who were abused in the grooming scandals, not only for the pejorative way white female children were described by the abusers but shamefully also by the Police. Into that toxic mix we find perpetrators have an army of lawyers fighting deportation of those who were convicted in such crimes. None of this bodes well for cohesive relationships within mixed communities when the abusers are still walking amongst the abused.

As others have identified there are racists on both sides of the political divide, possibly once a preserve of the far right, the extreme left are equally culpable of whipping up hatred although they would have us believe they are merely fighting the good fight.

petra Sat 24-Feb-24 10:09:43

Let’s not forget this poor man and his family. Are there any Muslim teachers hiding in fear of their lives?

Cossy Sat 24-Feb-24 10:08:20

I think it’s perfectly acceptable to feel for both empathy for the Palestinians and horror for the kidnapped Israelis, and to disagree with the horror of Hammas and the relentless attacks by the Israeli govt, both sides are wrong here, that doesn’t make a me a supporter of terrorism or a hater of Jews. I’d love to see a complete ceasefire, but like everyone else, fear this would be used for Hammas to regroup. This awful situation has gone on for far too many years and I just don’t know how it will ever be resolved, historically there’s wrongs in both sides, not that this fact ever excuses Hammas actions.

All very well making saintly comments, but people including MP’s who are still people!have families that they are worried about. We cannot allow mob rule to influence voting.I agree that language around this has to be careful but not so careful as to hide the truth. Some things shouldn’t Be brushed under the carpet.

Hiding heads in the sand about this growing problem won’t make it go away.

Neither will our MPS making inflammatory statements. This is a time for people to uphold the highest standards, not the lowest.

In my view, Suella Braverman and Lee Anderson are telling the truth and as usual, anyone telling the truth is lambasted. The pro-Palestinian marches are abhorrent. I really fear for my grandchildren's future the way this country is out of control on so many levels. Our Democracy is hanging by a thread. It is a disgrace the double standards that are being allowed.

I live in Essex, nearby we have growing groups of Orthodox Jews, quiet families going about their business. We have a vast diverse demographic. Mist problems here with hate crime are as a result small far right leaning white Brits! Swastikas have appeared, mosques have been graffitied, both Muslims and Jews, along with our Eastern European communities have been targeted. It’s a sad inditement of some of our citizens.

We regularly visit London, we both used to commute to London, the most frightening times for us in London was when the IRA were active in the late 70’s/early 80’s, buildings and stations we used were targeted and it was horrendous.

I am in Essex, the Jewish community near us are conspicuous by their absence in the High Street.
