Summerfly, thanks for setting out the devastating impact indecent exposure and talking in a sexualised way can have.

The press reports so far don’t identify the victims of Kyle Ratcliffe. Sex offenders often offend within their families as well

Not as a child Cosby, but I have seen a couple of counsellors. It helped, but after all these years, it’s not easy to change.

When I was a little girl, about 8yrs, I was on my way to the cinema with a friend when we were stopped by a man asking for directions. He then exposed himself to us and asked us to do various things. I was terrified. He was eventually found and arrested. He was known to the police. He received a prison sentence of three months. That doesn’t happen nowadays unfortunately. It may not seem a big deal to some, but it has affected me all my life. I’m afraid of my own shadow and all due to this.

Awful for you. Have you received counselling?

Well said Sarnia. 👏

The apple didn't fall far from the tree in this case. The more I learn about social media, the more I dislike it and worry about the effect it has, particularly on the younger generation. There is a worrying rise in this type of voyeurism. Just recently the 2 students murdered along with the school caretaker in Nottingham had their brutally attacked bodies circulated on social media by the police. Both officers have received a written formal warning. That will be a scary deterrent to others, I don't think. Sack them, charge them and take away their pensions. Give that cash to a victim support charity.

Wayne Couzens

Yes. it does matter.

I’ve looked at the summary in the mail on line and started a Wayne Cousins thread. The history is shocking

There was always absolutely no way that the murder of Sarah Everard was a first or even a third offense. It's just not how dangerous men operate.

I agree. I’ll look and if there isn’t a Wayne Cousins thread, I’ll start one

Sorry I also didnt mean to distract from the offenses committed by Eddie Ratcliffe, just awful.

Regarding the OP, it makes you wonder what sort of inappropriate / deviant behaviour the young lad, Eddie, had been exposed to during his life. It doesn’t excuse his actions but it might go some way towards explaining them. All very sadsad

From my own experience the Met take top prize for rotten coppers.

So no surprise there then.

I am just listening to the Wayne Cousins report. I was so shocked to hear that he had been found guilty of sexual abuse of a child and numerous counts of exposure BEFORE he was accepted as a police officer. Listening to the report it seems to me that misogyny is institutional in the police force - in my opinion until this is seriously tackled we will never get rid of this issue where exposure almost always leads to further much more serious crimes.

I too have been following this today and shocking is an understatement! Too many missed opportunities to stop this awful evil man ever becoming a police officer. Clearing the vetting system totally failed. It appears that he’s committed other yet not reported offences and I find it so hard to believe that at least one of his colleagues or managers didn’t “notice” his actions!

Today is the day that Jess Philips reads out all the women’s names that have been killed as a result of a violent act by a man during the past year.

This list is long and tragic.

I recall in the 80’s police/social work/probation being clear - no cautions for any sex offences. Charge assess treat - having said that treatment has limited success . Charging risks a not guilty finding whereas a caution is an admitted offence
It needs a national approach and recognition of the risks the offenders pose

Galaxy Thu 29-Feb-24 12:55:53

Dear God. The Wayne Couzens thing is horrendous as well. We need to look very urgently at these crimes such as exposure, they always escalate.

Iam64 Thu 29-Feb-24 12:10:16

I’ve heard some of the Cousins report but hadn’t heard the child sexual abuse.
We continue to avoid tackling the abuse of women and children effectively. Indecent exposure has been recognised as a gateway crime for a very long time.
It’s round and round in circles re-inventing the wheel. We know children are damaged by living with domestic abuse, we know women tolerate awful things in their desire to create a stable family.
