Why hasn’t the PM called a GE

I’m sure I’m being very naive, but why on earth hasn’t Sunak called a GE yet?

What does he really think is going to change between May and October?

Where is the benefit to anyone just putting it off?

Anyone here know the answer?

I still worry about whether people will actually go out and vote, considering how often we are told that Labour will definitely win the GE when it comes. A lot of people might think it's a foregone conclusion so might not bother - remember the Brexit referendum? sad

What if the Tories got back by accident, without any idea what they were doing - why should they suddenly think of a good plan when they are obviously clueless now?

There’s been so many by elections he’s having a GE by installments! 😂

But that’s not really good for the nerves though, is it? Let’s just get the d****d thing over with and perhaps life can be something to look forward to. Having said that, my constituency could put up a donkey wearing a blue rosette and it would win!

The donkey would probably do a better job and be more honourable.

Many constituents would vote for a donkey if you stuck a red rosette on its backside. Oh and a wig on its head.
Yes, it's come to a pretty pass when even a bewigged donkey is so much more likely to make a better job of things that people would vote for it, hasn't it?

Just heard Starmer bleating on about building more homes,my goodness come to my neck of the woods, everywhere you turn there's bloody houses going up.
People have to live somewhere. There is a serious homelessness problem in the UK, and a serious problem for a lot of young people who are unable to afford to buy a home because they are paying someone else's mortgage in the form of high rent. It's just as well they have someone to 'bleat on' for them', IMO 🐑
Bleating on about lack of investment, and apprenticeships, all alive and kicking well in my area.
Investment in what?

As for apprenticeships, I seem to remember you being all for the idea of their taking the place of a university education for other people's children. Even if they are alive and kicking in your area, one of the failed promises of the Tories was about levelling up across the country, so again, it's a good job someone is prepared to 'bleat on', is it not?

Perhaps he needs to get out of London more, but then non so blind as when an election is looming, he will push an agenda.
O don't understand the it about getting out of London, or about blindness, but it stands to reason that the Leader of the Opposition will push an agenda when there is an election looming. What else would you expect him to do?

Cillafan Thu 29-Feb-24 20:30:39

Rishi will call an election when he feels the time is right, he will get my vote, labour will have us back under the jackboot of the EU, no thanks!

Wheniwasyourage Fri 01-Mar-24 05:41:12

My goodness, Cillafan, “jackboot”, eh? Bit of an exaggeration, no?

Curtaintwitcher Fri 01-Mar-24 06:28:19

The longer they put it off, the more likely that Starmer will prove himself a dead loss.....and it's happening!

Happygirl79 Fri 01-Mar-24 08:30:44

Sunak will wait to see the publics reaction to the budget first. I do believe he will call a May election before things get worse though.

It what way is Starmer “a dead loss” ?

He’s leader of the opposition and as such has little power, other than holding the PM to account, which I think he does quite well

The building of new houses going up is staggering in the South East, wherever you go new estates popping up like mushrooms.
Sunak doesn’t have to call a GE so why would he, he can choose the timing.

I'm dismayed by the poor turnout at elections.
I'd like the government to use their last few months to make voting compulsory or at least look at ways of putting voting online.....loads of people vote for Strictly or I'm a Celebrity who'd never cast a political vote.

Galaxy Fri 01-Mar-24 11:25:43

Why should they? There is a complete disconnect between a large part of the population and the political institutions. Why should they participate in playing out a war thousands of miles from them.

flump Fri 01-Mar-24 15:12:07

Most people can't be bothered to vote because they don't understand how politics affects their lives. A lot of voters vote with their emotions. Extremists in all parties play on people's fears because of this. We get MPs elected who win because of FPTP but have more people voting against them than for them.

I think we should have compulsory voting and a PR system.

Amalegra Sun 03-Mar-24 11:25:49

They obviously hope the Budget will improve the outcome which I very much doubt. Personally I dread the coming election and the way it will dominate every single news bulletin and newspaper. That, together with the main parties’ continuing failure to properly address the questions that much of the electorate want answers to. The name calling, the endless interviews and debates, again not getting anywhere. All sides making grand statements of intent and promises we know will be broken or conveniently shunted to one side once whichever side is in power. The parties now offer little choice-I do not think that a Labour government will be our saviour unless they know where the magic money tree grows! Expectations are running high for change. I’ve seen it before only to be disappointed. My main concern will be who to vote for. Not one of these clowns will make a truly great or decisive leader-there are too many people to please and appease in this faction torn country.

WoodLane7 Sun 03-Mar-24 11:26:09

Simple - the Tories have no chance, so he thinks he may as well sit there raking in the salary for as long as possible. Once there is a GE its game over - and sadly I have no more confidence in Labour to run the country than in the Tories. we could do with a complete independent

here too but... NO AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR THE YOUNGSTERS TO GET ON THE HOUSING LADDER.

Purplepixie Sun 03-Mar-24 11:38:47

He is holding off on the GE as he knows he will lose.

Juniewoonie Sun 03-Mar-24 11:41:50

I’ve voted in every single election since I came of age but this time I honestly don’t want to vote for any of them! I wouldn’t trust any of them to run my household let alone this country.

Urmstongran Sun 03-Mar-24 11:42:07

Speculation about a May election to destabilise Labour over Gaza as their splits are wide over the ME right now. Who knows?

MaizieD Sun 03-Mar-24 11:44:19

He's far too busy delivering misery for the British people and promoting Islamophobia to be bother with calling a GE...🙄

As Cillafan said on another thread that "Donald Trump is a good man" who "knows what's right and what's wrong", I have no doubt whatsoever believing that she also sees Brexit as an enormous success.
Well, either that or she likes to stir things up on the politics threads. 🤔 😁

Whitewavemark2 Sun 03-Mar-24 11:49:34

Latest theory is that if he gets a bounce from the budget (doubtful) then he will go for a May election.

Urmstongran Sun 03-Mar-24 11:55:16

The only bounce would be if Hunt increased the Personal Allowance threshold which of course has been frozen for the next three years anyway. This would make the biggest difference to struggling households. A vote winner but sadly a missed opportunity.

Same here, in East Anglia, completely changing the environment, the villages are on the verge of becoming as big as towns without the facilities required for so many people.
