A lot of how I feel is actually put much, much better than I can by columnists Richard Littlejohn and Tom Utley of the Daily Mail. I can not bring myself to vote Tory after the way Boris was ousted, he was an ace prime minister, really caring and highly intelligent. I wonder what those on this forum so ready to put the knife into him would have done in his place.

Well, BevSec, I don't recognise Boris Johnson in your description. Intelligent he may be, caring and and able to use his intelligence for anyone's good apart from his own, he isn't. Perhaps listening to the scientists who told him about covid would have been a good start instead of just blathering on about how they were "following the science".

As for whether Labour could make this country a better place, I find it hard to imagine how they could make it worse.

It's not often I'm speechless but you've almost achieved it. The words "Boris Johnson" and "caring" rarely appear in the same paragraph, or even the same newspaper. I'm surprised you didn't chuck the word integrity into the mix for maximum shock effect.

I do hope you are being sarcastic but just in case you aren't, I suggest you read a great deal more about Johnson than you presumably have.

The reason he isn’t yet calling an election is because he thinks,at this stage, he would lose. He will toss a few perks around before he actually calls one, to soften up the voters. Just normal cynical political tactics. As for Starmer, all I could say is ‘good luck,’ with that one!

Is this the same Boris Johnson who, when told about investigations into historic child abuse used that refined comment that it was "spaffing money up the wall", the same Boris Johnson who was willing to let the "bodies pile high", and refused to return from holiday to attend the first Cobra meeting when the pandemic was beginning to take hold - and then missed a further 4 meetings?

He is well-educated, whether he is also intelligent is debatable.

Oh, and it's not a question of what we would've done in his place... we are the voters and we are allowed to hold the PM and his party to account without having to come up with a 'plan'. He has aides and advisors - we don't.

I've no idea if Labour will make this country a better place, but I'm sure they won't make it worse than it is now.

That, nanna8, is why some of us Brits are talking about the budget due to be announced in 3 days time. Many of us can't see that the tories can do anything that would entice many voters to vote for them.

What on earth would a few miserable tax cuts do about a failing NHS, polluted seas and rivers, big cuts to very basic services as many councils become bankrupt, crumbling schools, failing criminal justice system (e.g. if you're a rape victim it may be several years before your rapist is brought to trial), roads full of potholes (we hate pot holes ), train strikes (so commonplace now they're don't even make the news) etc. etc... ?

I would really like to see what Labour will do to make this country a better place. Why has this not happened under a Labour government already ie Blair? Boris Johnson was the best prime minister since Churchill. I really do think plenty of people feel as I feel but are too frightened to state their views on here due to the left leaning grans on here. I am not frightened in the least to state how .i feel!

Our esteemed PM is extremely busy making sure that the country is buggered beyond repair just to spite Keir Starmer. And the rest of us powerless peasants.

BevSec, is your post just meant to tease us? Perhaps you could tell us what caring and intelligent things Boris Johnson did for the country to make it a good place.I think most people want efficient and reliable public services - not tax cuts.

Why should he? the Conservatives are in power and wish to continue to be so for as long as possible.

In their position, I would be hanging it out as long as possible because, when the election does come, they are likely to be out of power for at least 10 years.

Knows he and his awful cronies can’t win a GE , so making life as difficult for labour when they get back in power , then it’ll seem like WE THE PEOPLE have made another mistake , and beg them to take over again in a few years …and put the rich buggers back onto their gravy train!

Firstly, I don’t think any Gran on here is “scared to state their views” there’s plenty of differing views on here and everyone is able to safely state them, just as others can safely disagree.

One does not have to be “left leaning” to want a fair and more equitable society, with good education and health provision, wanting to see all who can work in work and looking after our most vulnerable communities.

My dear late mother was very right wing, even she despaired of Johnson as she cannot abide liars, he was sacked from at least one job prior to entering politics for lying and has absolutely no scruples in his personal or professional life!

My mother voted in every election since she hit the age at which could vote and she voted Tory. At the last GE she couldn’t bring herself to vote at all as she was so disgusted with the current cabinet!

By all means state your views and vote for whom you like, we’re lucky enough to live in a democracy and we still have freedom of speech, but please don’t put words in other granetters mouths! Everyone on here is perfectly capable of speaking and expressing themselves without your help

Would you like to elaborate this dire warning, Freya? What do you think a Labour government will do that will be worse than the last 14 years of tory government?

Come to that, it would be helpful if our tory voters could tell us what has been so stunningly successful about the past 14 years that we should think about voting the tories in again.

I noticed nobody responded to my suggestion that they might want to read the Tom Baldwin biography of Keir Starmer. It is particularly interesting, because you understand not only what motivates him, but also how he tackles problems and policy development.
As I said before the suggestion was made more in hope than expectation!

I didn’t respond but I am ordering this book, it’ll be good to find out a bit more about Starmer, good and bad, so hoping it’s a good read and a balanced view.

From what I’ve seen and know about Starmer, he comes across (to me), as an honest, safe pair of hands. I don’t agree with all he says and does and I’m sure he’s made mistakes and will make more, we are all human.

My issue with this govt going back the entire 14 years, isn’t the mistakes which have been made but the attempts to cover up, the dishonestly and the lies.

The one thing that I cannot get enthusiastic about is Rachel Reeves has the same household budget mindset to the economy as the current Chancellor.

We need a different approach to get U.K. moving upwards and I am not sure that Labour’s economics are any better than Conservatives.

I’m not sure that Rachel Reeves will be the Chancellor in a Labour government. My money is on a reshuffle and some old names reappearing too.

You misunderstand - I'm not a Labour voter... I was simply hazarding a guess.

I try to look at the parties dispassionately, though obviously I have a bias.

Taking a 'snapshot' at the state of affairs of the nation as they are currently under 14 years or so of Conservative rule, it's not in good shape, and I believe that is not necessarily because it is a Tory government, more that its leaders and MPs are very much invested in self-interest rather than in the interests of the country as a whole.

Starmer- if his party wins - will inherit a poisoned chalice so I have no high expectations. And in spite of various poll-predictions, there's no guarantee he will be the next PM. The City / financial sector has much to fear from a Labour government, given some of its monetary plans.
