..so now please stop! Such was written by the Home Secretary yesterday, in respect of Gaza protest marches. The right to protest is an essential human right, espoused by the 1998 Human Rights Act despite increased attempts by this government to control them. Perhaps government officials should be stopped using inflammatory language about these events. Many, many people have commented on the peaceful, cross culture nature of these marches. Nanny state or what?

I’m sure many people thought suffragettes had “made their point” The point of protest is to show solidarity, keep the topic current and in some cases continue until the desired outcome has been reached.

It is part of being in a democracy- but again I blame the media for fanning this often fake news. They are the ones snipping away at our democratic values...

So naive as to think they are all peaceful. They are not. Intimidation, threats against Jewish people, threatening MPs, flying banned flags, shouting for jihad. Dressed as hamas thugs. So not my idea of peaceful. Bringing in the suffragettes is whataboutery at its worst.
I really don't know what these people think they're going to achieve, apart from what they are doing, intimidating and harassing people who just want to go about their lives and to work. Or perhaps it makes them feel better about a situation they can do sod all about.

It’s a very fine line between the right to protest and the right to go about one’s everyday life without navigating 1,000’s of protesters…

The point has been made in Rotherham - Galloway - long known for his support of Gaza has won the bye-election.

Curtaintwitcher Fri 01-Mar-24 06:25:14

Yes, we have the right to protest, but not to disrupt the daily lives of ordinary people. Obstructing the highway is an offence, yet the police have done nothing to intervene.
How long before we have clashes between Pro-Palestine and Pro-Israel protesters? War on our streets is just a short time away.

Galaxy Fri 01-Mar-24 06:33:47

Yes well done the Labour Party. George Galloway. I mean dear God.

Just to clarify, it's Rochdale not Rotherham

Spinnaker you are correct 👍🏻 I didn’t have my glasses on when I replied to Whitewavemark2

That is the scariest news today. Galloway is a fanatic, people voting for ideology outside the UK, we are on a dangerous path.
Rochdale itself has a very unsavoury past, par for the course.
Of course we mustn't forget the Islamist hassling and harassing other contenders because they did not like their views. How's that for democracy , well its not.

MaizieD Fri 01-Mar-24 08:04:48

Gallowaybwill be completely isolated in Parliament.

It will be interesting to see if he gets re-elected when there is a proper Labour candidate in place and it's possible that the situation in Gaza may be different from what it is today.

Casdon Fri 01-Mar-24 08:11:42

I just can’t take Galloway seriously at all since that cat incident. He will be a thorn in parliament’s side but if he isn’t given air time his ego won’t be fed, which would be to the common good.

Freya5 Fri 01-Mar-24 08:15:55

One brave lady, the only one I can see, standing amongst all those men, telling Galloway what for, his desperate bid , playing the Muslim card, to get back into politics, playing Gaza. Not letting her speak, clapping and chanting, what a dreadful spectacle.

Galaxy Fri 01-Mar-24 08:33:03

Its shameful that he has been elected.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 01-Mar-24 08:48:57

He is a real trouble maker - he was suggesting that Tice wanted him to stand for Reform.

Indeed.

The by-election isn’t the subject of this thread.
The constant marches through London are.I don’t think they will stop because a politician suggests they should but they may naturally tail away as the months go by.The loss of income from many businesses must be galling for the owners and who wants to go into the centre at weekends now? France banned any marches from the outset, on Gaza, I think they were wise.

I think that is a rumour started by GG, why would a right of centre party want a far left candidate in their stable doesn’t make any sense.

Yes I absolutely agree - but honestly as I’ve said on the other thread - nothing would surprise me at what the extreme parties do any more.

I know, I have no idea who I shall vote for in the GE, it really is a case of the lunatics taking over the asylum
