Trump and dementia - I'm lying awake at night worrying

Is anyone else feeling that the end of the world is coming? This has been a dreadful week.

I am literally lying awake at night these days worrying about the world. Near the top of my list, maybe right at the top, is the dreadful possibility that a man with advancing dementia is going to be President of the USA.

www.salon.com/2024/02/23/dr-john-gartner-on-a-tale-of-two-brains-bidens-brain-is-aging-brain-is-dementing/

This is only one of a plethora of articles raising questions about Trump's mental state. The distinction between him and Biden is important and one which any of us who have known dementia cases would be aware of. The experts say that Biden shows signs of a normal ageing brain for an alert man of his age - forgetting the odd name. But Trump goes into flights of fancy - thinking his father was born in Germany when it was his grandfather who was born in Germany is a big red flag. And what about his pronouncement that whatever he does, if he is President, is legal?
My husband points out that actually the US constitution does allow for a President with dubious mental capacity to be removed from office. But what damage could he do before they plucked up the courage to do that?
I feel as though I am watching a slow-motion global car crash where madmen, real actual madmen, are taking charge. Putin invades Ukraine and threatens Nato. Trump and his shameful band of Republicans refuse aid to Ukraine. Europe gets drawn in to the war. Or Putin just takes over after even more bloodshed. And then decides to invade a few more Eastern European countries. Conscription all over Europe. Endless, Orwellian war. And eventually, in about 2038, my darling, sweet four year old grandson in Poland will die in a muddy, freezing foxhole on the Polish-Belarus border.
Everyone is distracted by Gaza. I am no fan of Netanyahu - he should bloody well go - but Israel, for all its faults, is a genuine democracy in a region dominated by theocracies and autocracies. I do wonder why the Arab states do not do more to help the Gaza civilians; and why George Galloway's hero Putin is egging them on.

The murder of Navalny has sent me into a downward spiral. Help, somebody give me something to feel positive about.
Sorry but I'm sitting here waiting for a plumber to sort out the bad smell in my rental property which is making my tenant, justifiably, very angry and I feel helpless and useless.

Oh please. Anyone who believes this needs their own head examined. There’s nothing normal or alert about his brain.

I dare you to criticise President Biden's brain after watching his amazing State of The Union Speech - if you can concentrate for nearly two hours!

No, I didn’t say that you did, but I’ve been rather taken aback by the number of posters who seem to support the ghastly Trump, and you post suggested to me that you might be one of them. I’m sorry that I have misinterpreted you! smile

And do you think Trump is any better, FoghornLeghorn?

I don’t think I said that did I?

The only plus in all this is neither will become Prime Minister of the UK. Unfortunately, we have our own home-grown politicians for that.

I agree with you 100%, Grantanow.

I doubt that you watch anything but short snippets of clips that catch him in occasional gaffes . It’s always the same ones . He does have a stutter that he fights against that causes some of his bloops. The important part is he has a great and competent team that together with Bidens decades of experience as a politician has created an economy that is going forward . Trumps team was drugged up to the nines as reported recently by the Rolling Stone . Everything from Xanax to ketamine and washed down with alcohol . The only thing Trump accomplished was a HUGE debt caused by tax cuts to the wealthy .

Retired Harvard psychiatry professor Lance Dodes states, “Mr. Trump’s sociopathic characteristics are undeniable. They create a profound danger for America’s democracy and safety. Over time these characteristics will only become worse, either because Mr. Trump will succeed in gaining more power and more grandiosity with less grasp on reality, or because he will engender more criticism producing more paranoia, more lies, and more enraged destruction.”

Well they know the answer. Get rid of Biden. Trump wouldn’t have a hope if they got someone half decent but they don’t,do they?

Biden IS half decent, just too old and just not up to another term. He’s a decent man, whose major fault is being past his sell by date!

Such a shame these two appear to be the best choices this huge Country can
come up with!

.varian For the record - Trump’s sycophantic MAGA following is actually more like 40% (not 20%).

If only it were 20%, the country might no be as anxious then.

Not just the group mentioned above.
The black and Latino vote are deserting Biden.

Just to say a big thanks to all of you who responded to my post, all very kindly meant.
I don't take any offence at having my mental health questioned - I don't consider it a stigma. As I said in my original post I am aware of the "downward spiral" phenomenon, also I'm aware that I'm prone to "catastrophising". I'm wondering about going back on antidepressants but on the other hand, Sertraline won't deal with the bad smell from the drains, will it?
But the responses to my post I cannot ever agree with are those of you, again well-meaning, advising me to avoid the news. I think it is very important to be properly informed and to get news from more than one reputable source, which is why I have a wide political spectrum of British newspaper and broadcaster apps on my iphone. Those of you who are retired and maybe have "leisure" (yes, I know it never feels like it!) have no excuse to bury your heads in the sand.
What is happening in America is the result of a breakdown of trust in professional news journalism, a breakdown which has been keenly encouraged by Trump. It's a terribly polarised society now and each side only listens to one source, which is disastrous.
I saw a hilarious -well, it would be hilarious if it wasn't so terrifying - clip of a reporter asking Trump supporters their opinion of a selection of ridiculous quotes allegedly by Biden. They poured scorn on the quotes - "he's got dementia" etc. Then the reporter said "Oh, sorry, I have my notes muddled up - can we start again? These are comments by President Trump" - and the Trump supporters changed their attitude to one of respectful acceptance, without missing a beat.

Two interesting points of view:
Nikki Haley said earlier in the campaign that "the party which is the first to ditch its octogenarian candidate will be the party that wins".
The BBC's USA correspondent Justin Webb thinks that neither Trump nor Biden will be in the race come November.

To the person who said "Trump knows right from wrong" - you are obviously a bot and shouldn't be on Gransnet. How's the weather in Moscow?

varian Tue 05-Mar-24 19:02:16

I agree with your description of Trump Frenchgalinspain

I worry a lot bout the state of sanity in the USA that there is even a chance of Trump being re-elected.

But what can we do?

It seems that perhaps 20% or more of the US electorate are Trump cult followers, brainwashed beyond redemption.

All we can do is to encourage the apathetic Americans to register to vote and not allow their country to slide into a dictatorship.

As Morrisey said, Stop watching the news, as the news contrives to frighten you

Cadenza123 Tue 05-Mar-24 14:40:32

Totally agree with the previous poster. Ditch the news, laying awake at night and worrying is not going to help anyone. Most people I know limit their exposure to news. Bear in mind that the 24 hour news stations have to find something to talk about. 15 mins is enough and then go and enjoy your life. It's the only one you have.

Witzend Tue 05-Mar-24 14:32:30

Honestly, OP, steer clear of the news for a while! Or just do a brief catch up via the BBC website - don’t watch or listen to it.

My dh positively wallows in news, he has it on much of the time*, and unlike me, it doesn’t really bother or depress him. But I do mostly keep clear now.
*mostly in his lair, aka study, so I don’t have to be bombarded with it.

Frenchgalinspain Tue 05-Mar-24 14:24:04

In my viewpoint, Trump is scandalous in his actions, a total liar, a maniac filled with hatred, a racist totally against Latin, Asian and Black Americans and has lost all his money in the Manhattan criminal case ..

He is like a "Mafia" and represents a "mad man" ..

Biden, has class and is soft spoken, and though he is not always correct, he is not hateful towards others. He has total protocol and etiquette.

Biden has tried to collaborate with Trump on the "Mexican and Texas / Arizona / California Border problems however, Trump did not wish to hear it or deal with a collaboration. VERY SAD ..

Trump has a serious issue with authority and dictating .. He is not a collaborating with others.

His threats are vulgar, for e.g. " I am going to kill your family" which he stated in court to the witnesses as well as the Prosecutors.

He is in debt up to this carrot top of his head with legal fees and believes he is top gun !!!

My view..

I haven’t watched the news for a year….decided that after 73 years I realised I cannot change a thing about the world …so I stopped watching its inevitable decline !
I’m much happier!
My daughter doesn't own a tv and her kids don’t watch news either!
No point!
They are all layers and rogues and deserve one another!

TanaMa Tue 05-Mar-24 10:08:17

Having listened to all my friends in the U.S. if A. it seems that they are all for Trump to put right the wrongs if the Biden era! What would worry me is the age of both men wanting to take on such responsibility and the Country accepting that! Even in U.K. I would find it difficult to nominate anyone to be P.M. let alone President!!

Grammaretto Mon 04-Mar-24 23:47:17

I agree grandtante
There should be an age barier to standing for president.
It seems that being a polititian, or an actor for that matter, are roles not deemed important enough to warrant a retirement age.

I'm sorry Saracyn that you bear such worries on your own .

I recommend a month's holiday from media and social media.
If nothing else, it will release time to concentrate on other things.
