Just to say a big thanks to all of you who responded to my post, all very kindly meant.
I don't take any offence at having my mental health questioned - I don't consider it a stigma. As I said in my original post I am aware of the "downward spiral" phenomenon, also I'm aware that I'm prone to "catastrophising". I'm wondering about going back on antidepressants but on the other hand, Sertraline won't deal with the bad smell from the drains, will it?
But the responses to my post I cannot ever agree with are those of you, again well-meaning, advising me to avoid the news. I think it is very important to be properly informed and to get news from more than one reputable source, which is why I have a wide political spectrum of British newspaper and broadcaster apps on my iphone. Those of you who are retired and maybe have "leisure" (yes, I know it never feels like it!) have no excuse to bury your heads in the sand.
What is happening in America is the result of a breakdown of trust in professional news journalism, a breakdown which has been keenly encouraged by Trump. It's a terribly polarised society now and each side only listens to one source, which is disastrous.
I saw a hilarious -well, it would be hilarious if it wasn't so terrifying - clip of a reporter asking Trump supporters their opinion of a selection of ridiculous quotes allegedly by Biden. They poured scorn on the quotes - "he's got dementia" etc. Then the reporter said "Oh, sorry, I have my notes muddled up - can we start again? These are comments by President Trump" - and the Trump supporters changed their attitude to one of respectful acceptance, without missing a beat.
Two interesting points of view:
Nikki Haley said earlier in the campaign that "the party which is the first to ditch its octogenarian candidate will be the party that wins".
The BBC's USA correspondent Justin Webb thinks that neither Trump nor Biden will be in the race come November.
To the person who said "Trump knows right from wrong" - you are obviously a bot and shouldn't be on Gransnet. How's the weather in Moscow?
