Princess of Wales has cancer

The CEO of the Centre for Countering Digital Hate said yesterday on Laura Kuenssberg that the Princess of Wales has been revictimised by social media trolls who have publicly blamed her for not disclosing her cancer diagnosis sooner.

We didn't need a CEO of anything to point that out to us; we just needed to look at some of the posts on this thread to see that. To date we've had:

Catherine should should have fessed up sooner
She should reveal exactly what type of cancer she has and where it is
She's pretty much responsible for the media intrusion herself because she altered her own family photo and had lookalikes going walkabouts.
She can't complain about the media intrusion because she is a world-wide figure and it comes with the teritory (sic).

It's become easier to see how hospital employees would think that they had an entitlement to view Catherine's private medical records just by reading some of the nasty, entitled, ignorant comments, on a forum populated predominantly by retired people that you might have hoped would have grown kinder and more empathetic over their lifetime.

Russia and China may well have instigated the negative comments but certain sections of the British Press, and public, have compounded it with enthusiasm.

To be clear, no-one owes you their personal medical information, no matter where they are in the public eye. The fact that someone who is dealing with something really difficult in their lives, and the lives of their young family, has had to reveal all to the salivating public is pretty horrible.
I am absolutely no-one's idea of a royalist, and I know all the arguments about the money, and I don't much like all the "pomp and circumstance" around it all...
.... but that's nothing to do with the simple fact of a human being who already had to give birth with cameras outside the window, now having to give public statements on painful details of her own health because some parts of the public seems to think they own the right to know.
They don't.

apparently, much of the negative brou-haha online originates in china, russia and iran.
it is a type of modern warfare to destabilise the western alliance.
so i've read today.
i find that quite plausible.

Everyone reacts differently to a cancer diagnosis, whether it be personal or a family member.

The kindest and most respectful thing we can do is respect a persons wishes, support them in how they wish to deal with it along with being supportive in any decisions they make regarding their treatment.

How to cause more stress when she needs it least.

As for people saying what she should have done, should be doing, I'd ask if they have ever had to cope with personally having to deal with cancer?
I don't even mean a loved one becoming ill, I mean themselves, when they are in shock, feeling ill, drained, having to tell family? And that without the intrusion of the media and trolling.

The photo was not 'edited. All that happened was that a few insignificant areas that were untidy were tidied up.

Nothing that was done to the photo made any difference to the substance of the photo, no wedding ring was edited in, for example, and the lack of a weddding ring was cause for comment. No substantial change was made, so no editing.

Personally, I would have told everyone what operation I was having, also I would not have edited the photograph. Also by saying, what sort of cancer she has, may have helped other women & the cancer charities raise more money

That's you but the Princess of Wales thought differently and asked for time which some didn't give her, hounding her every day until she is almost forced to make a statement. Leave the poor woman alone for goodness sake.

I'm not getting at your style personally lemsip, but just thinking out loud, that if every new point started a new royal thread, then we would all be heartily sick of royal discussions in News & Politics.

But threads evolve naturally with no need for new ones every time the discussion expands.
For example, this one has covered the announcement, its timing, press intrusion, trolling, cancer, personal experiences of the disease, kind wishes, royal protocol, and yes celebrity status. It is all bound up under the opening post and if someone wants to discuss it, then it's relevant.
And if someone has the mind of a grasshopper, like me, and wants to bring up another point, that's fine too.

I did mean the use of celebrity to describe some members of the royal family

Cabbie21 you mentioned that some good could come from Catherine’s revelation about her cancer diagnosis in that it may encourage others to get symptoms checked.
I had thought exactly the same.

We’ve had the startling revelation (at least startling to me) that one in two of us will get some form of cancer in our lifetime.

It’s very easy to ignore symptoms isn’t it, especially if they are relatively mild and we think they can be innocently explained away, but as the King and Catherine’s diagnoses have both come along within weeks of each other, it’s certainly a wake up call.

I think it's fine to discuss the word celebrity. I am quite confused why it wouldnt be.

I was until I just quickly logged on again.

This started as a sympathetic, empathetic thread but, having glanced at it again after a few hours, I am sad to see that it has descended into bickering, mainly fuelled by one poster.

Celebrities has become a virtually meaningless word, covering both genuinely celebrated people and others on debased quiz shows such as Nonentity Mastermind and Pointless Nonentities. It has reached the point where anybody who appears regularly in the media is accorded the title. This in turn has blurred our expectations of what is expected of them, whether they need to feed the oxygen of publicity or would like to keep aspects of their lives private.

It's not a happy situation.

Yes but I tend not to see all the details of them unless they are very close to me. I think I saw the royals children at an earlier date than my brothers baby.

Catherine herself chose to tell. She in no way had to.

It was going to be breaking news in the USA, that’s why she had to talk about it.

She was faced with a "choice" that we used to describe as "Hobson's Choice".

... which is a choice where really there isn't one, it's just an illusion.

As you point out, either she broke the news - or those nice individuals in the media would have done.
