“JOAN MORECAMBE, who has died on her 97th birthday, was the devoted wife of the comedian Eric Morecambe and, after his death in 1984, did much work for charity, as founder president of the Lady Taverners, part of the Lord’s Taverners youth cricket and disability sports charity, from 1987 to 1992.

A former Miss Margate, Joan Bartlett met Eric Morecambe in 1951 when she was performing as a dancer in a variety show at the Edinburgh Empire, and Morecambe and Wise were also on the bill. “There was nothing between us at first, just normal touring people helping each other out,” she recalled in an interview on the Morecambe and Wise website.

“He was due to play Margate and I was going to Morecambe. He said I should stay with his parents and I told him to stay with mine. The only problem was, when he turned up at my parents’ pub, he brought half of Billy Cotton’s band with him!”

For Eric, however, it appears to have been love at first sight, and it was not long before he proposed. “He was very persistent but I took a little time to agree,” Joan recalled. “When we were working in different shows, he’d travel miles to see me just for an evening. I think he probably ‘joked’ me off my feet rather than whisked me off my feet!”

They married in December 1952 and had their first baby, a daughter, within a year. After the birth of a son in 1956, Joan stopped travelling with Eric and remained at home to look after their children. They adopted another son in 1973.“

She was very glamorous. No wonder Eric fell for her. Lovely people, both of them

I was very touched to read her grandson's tribute. He wrote:
"What the articles don’t say is how, as children, we’d all sneak into her bed every morning for cuddles, or how she’d always cut the crusts off our toast and have endless boxes of biscuits at the ready. A wise, beautiful, remarkable woman. Sleep well, Nan" 💔

Lovely tribute to a lovely lady.

They are together again.

What a lovely lady she sounds, and a devoted couple.

I always watch the re-runs of the Christmas specials. Morecambe and Wise were masters of their trade and I still giggle and laugh whenever I watch them.

One of my schoolfriends, who was interested in science, was lucky enough to work on one of their shows during the shcool holidays helping with the special effects (a wind-machine and a windmill if I remember correctly.) She said they were very welcoming and kind to her, not stand-offish or showbizzy at all.

A lovely lady.

I loved the Morecambe and Wise show, all of them. They still make me laugh, especially the one with Andre Previn.

I worked for many years as a mobile manicurist. One of my oldest and dearest clients had been a landlady for Luton Town footballers. Eric Morecambe was a regular visitor to make sure they were comfortable and happy.

He and his wife were just good people.

They were so funny, but more than that they just seemed such lovely lovely people. I'd have tuned in to see them reading the weather. RIP Joan.

Sad that she was a widow for a longer time than she knew him. 😥

Juicylucy Sun 07-Apr-24 11:32:32

Sad…. I volunteer at the Eric Morecombe Centre built in his home town to honour him. RIP

There's been a radio documentary series on R4 Extra recently, very interesting. I always loved Morecombe and Wise, I think most people did.

Very touching. My Dad loved Morecambe and Wise.

Yes, happy memories of watching Morecambe & Wise as a family with my Mum & Dad. My Dad also died in 1984.

I once read that as soon as he set eyes on her at that variety show he told Ernie he was going to marry her. He wasn't going to take no for an answer!

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 04-Apr-24 18:42:35

They married in Margate. There's a plaque in the town referring to this. A long widowhood, for sure, but hopefully her memories of her good man were a comfort.
