Oversharing of personal information - have we reached the nadir?

No doubt many GN members have been uplifted and delighted this week to read that Jonathan Ross, and his wife, shower once a week. Having noted in passing that his mind and body are now in one accord, the next thought was that far too much that is trivial, and far too personal, is printed as if it were worthwhile news. Does anyone agree?

It's not essential to bath every day.

Good for them.

I expect people here were in the bath once a week too, growing up.

Exactly, and we didn’t smell. For people on here to say it’s ‘gross’ is laughable.

Having recently spent 2 weeks in hospital unable to have a shower because I was hooked up to too many gadgets, I can confirm that a wash with a flannel is perfectly adequate to stay clean and fresh. I enjoy a shower and a bath but I don't feel I need to have one every day and I'm sure many don't for financial reasons. I feel sorry for families on a limited budget, the cost of heating water especially with a water meter must be a worry.

Why would you need to save water in the UK where it rains all the time? I can understand it here where we have long droughts and put in tanks to collect rainwater for gardens etc but, really, the UK ?

Small island, lots of users.
If we have floods, there’s nowhere to store the water. If we have a week of dry weather, we get warnings about hosepipe bans.

The idea of only bathing once a week is horrible to me .
Lack of personal hygiene ( and his horrendous tempers) made me finish a relationship .
It's up to Jonathan Ross and his wife .
I don't really want to know !

I don't care what Ross does but it's well-known that too-frequent bathing washes away essential oils from the skin.

His daughter, HoneyRose has said it was a joke.

This thread made me laugh. JR should sign up to GN and he could share all his water saving techniques on the frequent showering or bedlinen washing topics. We never seem to worry about TMI.

My guess is I could shower every day for half an hour and my environmental impact will still be less than Johnathan Ross' environmental impact.

Sago Fri 05-Apr-24 12:42:51

Not a fan of JR but he has at least opened a debate.
I think that showering daily is often an unnecessary habit, I may shower once or twice daily if I’m abroad or it’s a hot UK day.
Otherwise I may skip a day depending on what I’ve been doing.
A wash is perfectly adequate if you’ve not spent a day hiking/gardening etc.

Oh yes.

No time for Jonathan Ross since the Andrew Sachs incident. However I think we do need to be more careful with our use of water, not advocating a once weekly shower though. Use of sprays, chemicals etc for personal freshness is bad for the environment and for us. I do try to at least to hit the middle way with these things.

AGAA4 Fri 05-Apr-24 12:00:20

I haven't had a bath for 10 years. I do shower though.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Apr-24 11:55:02

Yes, he's doing just as we were all bought up to do, and saving water, too.

OldFrill Fri 05-Apr-24 11:45:05

I had a bath once a week as a child whether l needed one or not. My older brother went in the same water after me, he always disputed his need for one. We had thorough washes on all other days, l can still feel the flannel.
Jonathan Ross says he does the same.

crazyH Fri 05-Apr-24 11:42:29

I used to have a long shower every morning and sometimes before bed - but since I went on a meter, my daily showers are shorter.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Apr-24 11:36:47

I like humans to smell like humans.

Aveline Fri 05-Apr-24 11:34:54

I'd rather people had a good wash however this was achieved than spray themselves with chemicals and smelly lotions and potions.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Apr-24 11:31:42

LovesBach Fri 05-Apr-24 11:29:54

Nothing wrong with choosing not to shower or bath once a day - as children, with no hot water system in the house, we were washed thoroughly with soap and flannel every day and bathed about twice a week. Mr Ross however seems to be enjoying being grubby; 'We’re like a couple of hamsters in their own straw in that bed.” Oh, yuk.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Apr-24 11:02:52

I think my mum had quite a crush on him, secretly.

Grandmabatty Fri 05-Apr-24 11:01:50

We only had a weekly bath when I was younger, but washed every day. I don't like him, but for other reasons, not that particular one.

Kate1949 Fri 05-Apr-24 10:53:30

Theexwife. Just because a celebrity says something doesn't make it true. It's called 'show' business. Cynical? Moi?

annodomini Fri 05-Apr-24 10:53:10

Who cares? If there are people out there who care about so-called celebrities' ablutions, we should be very concerned about the kind of society we apparently belong to.
