The matter of Angela Rayner's house sale isn't going away.....

Angela Rayner is now to be investigated for breaking electoral law. It seems she has said that she married, and then lived in her ex council house for the next four years, while her husband lived in his nearby ex council house with her brother. Neighbours at her address said that her brother lived in her house alone, and that he referred to her as his landlady. This issue seems to be getting bigger by the day - surely electoral rolls show where people are registered to vote, and this should clarify the matter.

I wish she had aspired to elocution lessons.

JaneJudge Sat 13-Apr-24 14:45:21

Not that being a Mum is something that should be looked down on anyway smile

JaneJudge Sat 13-Apr-24 14:44:57

I don't know why people always bring up about her being a teen mum. Surely she has set a really good example to young Mums about what you can achieve even if you don;t do well at school and have a baby young. She aspired to more and that should be admired.

Whether he considered himself accountable or not, he was held to account.

Wyllow3 Sat 13-Apr-24 14:33:15

Whatever the original advice, it’s likely now that she is quite rightly being advised to not further comment by legal advisors until a great deal more is sorted out.

LizzieDrip Sat 13-Apr-24 14:30:25

Obviously Zahawi didn’t consider himself accountable to anybody when he sent lawyers letters to Dan Neidle and some journalists threatening to sue them if they exposed his tax affairs.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-Apr-24 14:20:35

She is a politician. She is accountable.

Anniebach Sat 13-Apr-24 14:18:54

Why is she answerable to the press ?

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-Apr-24 14:06:16

He has said on tv that he hasn’t seen the advice Maizie.

If only an oral opinion was given, why doesn’t she say that instead of refusing to give details? Any professional giving advice would record that advice preferably in a letter to the client, but certainly in a note on the client’s file.

Wyllow3 Sat 13-Apr-24 13:53:50

If the consultation was verbal only, no record.

MaizieD Sat 13-Apr-24 13:48:07

Or, she didn’t consult anyone but says she did. Hence not even Starmer has seen the advice.

How can you possibly know what Starmer has, or hasn't seen?

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-Apr-24 13:41:52

Exactly.

Agree Grandmabatty! This is the Tories and their client media up to their old tricks. Boris Johnson attends numerous parties during lockdown … but look, Keir Starmer has a beer and a curry not during lockdown. Nadhim Zahawi ‘comes to an arrangement with HRMC’ to pay £5million in unpaid taxes and penalties … but look, Angela Raynor may / may not owe £1k in tax from 10 years ago, before she was even an MP. William Wragg sends d* pics and discloses colleagues phone numbers to a stranger online, potentially causing a security risk … but look, AR may / may not have given an incorrect address. Why were journalists questioning AR’s neighbours anyway - smacks of a Tory / media witch hunt to me. They’re trying to create the create the narrative that ‘all politicians are as bad as each other’. Well, they’re not!

Nope, sorry, cannot agree.
All wrongdoing by politicians including lies and fraud needs looking at.This must include any politicians regardless of political party.

Wyllow3 Sat 13-Apr-24 13:35:31

Or, Raynor consulted someone who was considered to know the legal situation but didn't properly.

I'm inclined to agree, MayBee. tho I'd add, some in the party.
Because every time "dirty tricks" are pulled, it reduces public belief in our system, ie "they're all the same".

Richard Holden (who as alluded to above, tried to get Beergate off the ground, is my son's MP. Holden went at it dirty and obsessively and all it did eventually lead to local chronicle headlines, "County Durham Tory MP Richard Holden accused of wasting police time over 'Beergate'"

Thing is, MayBee, she hasn’t been slow to attack Conservatives, has she? If she has broken the law, or is lying, that’s serious. You know what she would be saying if the boot were on the other foot. I doubt she is the only person in her party who champions the poor and underprivileged.

Have you seen the list of Tory MPs she called to resign😀😀

Enough said. She was proven right every single time!

LizzieDrip Sat 13-Apr-24 13:22:44

If, sadly, she does have to stand down (although if no laws are broken then she shouldn’t) will it just be from her position as deputy leader? In other words, will she remain as a Labour MP? I agree with MayBee70 AR is a remarkable woman💪🏻 and should not be lost by the Labour Party.

I read a while back that it was going to be a nasty election campaign and imo the Conservative Party are desperate to find some mud to throw at Labour. This is all they’ve found thus far. Reminds me a bit of Keir and his mums donkeys. Angela is probably one of he most remarkable women in politics and, if she does have to stand down the people that will suffer will be the poor and underprivileged that she champions.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-Apr-24 12:48:43

I agree. In all probability nothing will come of it because if electoral law was broken it’s too late for a prosecution and unless HMRC have reason to suspect deliberate tax evasion the time limit for investigation has passed. She could so easily show that she had advice as regards her tax position and acted on that advice by making it public; any irrelevant personal detail could be redacted. Surely someone in her position who had received such advice would do that? If the advice was incorrect she is not responsible for that provided she disclosed her situation fully to the advisor. A legal opinion always sets out the facts on which the advice is given. The refusal to show the advice raises questions as to whether it exists and therefore whether she is telling the truth, or whether it was based on something short of the full facts.

LizzieDrip Sat 13-Apr-24 12:34:48

Thanks for answering my question GSM. We’ll just have to wait and see then. As long as she is treated in exactly the same way as other MPs who have acted similarly, then all’s fair.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-Apr-24 12:26:04

I was asked which laws she was alleged to have broken growstuff, and I replied. I didn’t refer to police involvement, which of course that relates only to the electoral law allegations.

^For all I know (and I stress that I don't know), Rayner could have been spending most of her time in the house she still owned^
I only know what neighbours said - that she was never there, did not live there.

I hope she didn't have neighbours like the ones I used to have! hmm

I must look up the definition of ‘asset’ …

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

What on earth does that mean?

It's plain enough
