Agreed Growstuff (we sound like Thatcher’s children 😱) which is why Rayner is wrong to deny current council tenants in England the Right to Buy. Here in Wales Labour stopped aspiring homeowners since 2019.

Isn’t that what Rayner has been outspoken about - that the discount that is now given - up to 60% - is too much? She bought her house with a discount of 25%. If build costs including land are 75% of sale price (I have no idea if that is the case) then giving discounts of 60% isn’t going to provided anywhere near enough capital to replace sold stock.

Well blow me, I never realised that to be a Labour supporter you had to eschew all personal gain in the pursuit of the common good. I’m going to vote Tory from now on, how could I have been so misguided, as a home owner, to think voting Labour was all about having a social conscience and working towards a fairer society.

I personally know of people who voted Tory in the 80s90s to ensure they could benefit and now complain there’s no social housing for their children and now grandchildren'. And of course they’re back to being Labour supporters!

So just because somebody is staunch Labour means they can never seize opportunities to which everybody is entitled? Sorry, but I don't understand that mentality. Aspiration is for everybody.

That really made me laugh MissAdventure. I thought it was some sort of slang you'd picked up from the Sweeney (showing my age there).

Anyway, I was always against the right to buy but I don't blame those who seized the opportunity in the least.

Whatever Angela Rayner may or may not have done, it pales into withering insignificance compared to the sleaze and greed of the Tories, pontificating with their vast inherited wealth from stately piles in the Cotswolds.

None of them having done a day's real work in their life, let alone lived in a council house. Many of them are crooks and liars too despite their enormous privilege.

I know this isn’t really relevant to all this but I assume that everyone knows that, on top of having a very difficult early life because of her mothers bi polar disorder she also has a severely disabled child, something that might have complicated the living arrangements with her husband.

Her son lived at her house - the one she registered as her main address.

Coming up to an election we have to expect the opposition to scrape up any slight whiff of a misdemeanor. If only they'd all concentrate on developing good policies instead.

“I’ve repeatedly said I would welcome the chance to sit down with the appropriate authorities, including the police and HMRC, to set out the facts and draw a line under this matter. I am completely confident I’ve followed the rules at all times.

“I have always said that integrity and accountability are important in politics. That’s why it’s important that this is urgently looked at, independently and without political interference.

“I make no apologies for having held Conservative ministers to account in the past. Indeed, the public would rightly expect me to do so as a Deputy Leader of the Opposition.”

She added: “We have seen the Tory Party use this playbook before – reporting political opponents to the police during election campaigns to distract from their record. I will say as I did before - if I committed a criminal offence, I would of course do the right thing and step down. The British public deserves politicians who know the rules apply to them.

“The questions raised relate to a time before I was an MP and I have set out my family’s circumstances and taken expert tax and legal advice. I look forward to setting out the facts with the relevant authorities at the earliest opportunity.”

I think she bought the house before she became a politician. It's not a case of having a principle before it suited her - it was the other way round.

I agree with her that Right to Buy should stop until/unless there's a guarantee that proceeds will be used to build more social housing. We now know how disastrous the policy has been for people who will never be able to afford to buy on the open market.

I'm sure there must be other incentives that could be put into place to help people on poor wages to get on the ladder - or even to have enough monkey to cover expenses, when they work gruelling full time jobs.
