Oh this from Flappergirl says everything I was going to say.

I am amazed since I came back to this site how so may people are wound up by what the read in the Mail or on TV news?

What happened to questioning the media?

If you read the link you'll see that it was not reported quite like that.

My post earlier, Callistemon21 Sat 20-Apr-24 15:10 contains an extract from the DM report.

It is not just British tourists, it is tourists from other countries too, although one 15 year old complained about having to learn English in school in order to accommodate the tourist industry. 🤔 In fact, many students the world over learn English as a second language and British schoolchildren have to learn a second language in school (often Spanish!).

Yes, I will agree that tourism probably is damaging our planet.

I don't agree that we will run out of water, it's just that we don't manage it well. Oil and gas pipelines traverse continents, go under the seas but there is not the same will to provide water in areas that need it.

I'm amazed too keepingquiet. Why are newspapers regarded as paragons of truth? They are run for money and to push their own agenda, pure and simple. Other than trying to avoid libel suits (which they often fail at anyway) they can spin anything to their advantage. Words are one of the most dangerous and easily manipulated tools known to mankind and always have been.

The Daily Mail is of course framing the protests as racially motivated and organised by idiotic rabble. They are trying to convince a very easily persuaded demographic that the Canary islanders are spoilt children who want their cake and eat it and are biting the (obviously superior) British hand that feeds them. Oh so typical of Johnny Foreigner!

The newspaper, as usual, is doing itself and its readers a disservice and will not be on the right side of history.

Tourism in its current state in countries all over the world is untenable. The planet is over crowded and resources are dwindling. Housing will soon be a luxury for vast swathes of the population and water, in the not too distant future, will start to run low.

I was watching a wildlife programme just the other day about safaris in Africa. One imagines being taken on a jeep across sweeping empty plains by a caring local who is an expert on wild animals.

Nothing could be further from the truth. There were about 50 jeeps packed with humans all concentrated in one spot gawping at cheetah cubs who were obviously very disturbed by the noise and petrol fumes.

Apparently cheetah cubs are often run over and killed by the jeeps. The programme reduced me to tears.

Things are going to have to change radically. Continuing as we are is not an option and I think the Canary Island protests are just the beginning.

It's about a balance and unfortunately a great many places don't have that having let tourism expand too much. When children were young we had a second home which we used most weekends and every holiday. We sold to a local but it's now advertised on Airbnb. When sil retired she moved permanently into her second home and complains constantly about the empty holiday homes! She really struggles to find workmen and when her husband needed lots of care she couldn't find it despite being willing to pay very well. Locals just can't afford to live locally.

We like to get away from the tourists areas, years ago we would have used B&Bs, now it’s Airbnb’s which usually means an annex rather than a room. Weve found some lovely places away from the beaten track, lovely people too.

If the locals don’t like the planning policy - change it, but no tourists means no jobs and the locals still can’t afford to buy a house. Tourism does mean jobs, the downside is the jobs are mainly low paid service jobs but you’re not going to attract many industrial jobs in usually remote areas.

So many places in the world have been spoiled by tourism. The host countries are to blame for encouraging it. They build huge hotels and eateries to cater for holiday-makers. By doing so, they ruin the nature of the place and destroy the very reason why people go there.
Yes, tourists bring money to the local economy, but is it worth it?

Very!

Witzend Sat 20-Apr-24 19:01:57

Similar in Majorca, according to a friend with a house there - her dad bought it in 1971.
Locals priced out, and not happy.

Don’t know if this has already been said but it’s tourists in general, not Brits the people are demonstrating about. This is about so many hones being air b and b making them unavailable and unaffordable for locals. All inclusive hotels don’t help.
We have this in our country, empty houses in beautiful villages from Norfolk to Cornwall and no doubt north, in fact everywhere tourists want to visit.
It’s a tough one when a country relies on tourism.

Yes, that is why I said the heading was misleading, incurring the wrath of the OP!

This is exactly where the Canaries are now.

It's not new either.
I can remember the 1970s when cottages in Wales owned by English people as 2nd homes were being burned down.
We were holidaying there, staying in a B&B (not an airbnb) when a cottage nearby was set alight.

I have never wanted a second home even if it was affordable .

Friends bought a cottage in Wales; there was absolutely no interest from locals in buying it. It was in an isolated position, dilapidated so they and another couple bought our, did it up sympathetically and spent holidays there. They shopped locally when they visited.
Had they not bought it, it might well have become a ruin.

However, I do know the problems that exist in areas where holiday homes are only inhabited for a few weeks, people from London come with their boot full of food and wine and do nothing to help the local economy. Instead they price locals out of the area.

Callistemon21 Sat 20-Apr-24 18:18:25

BlueBelle

There were lots of anti tourist placards and posters in Barcelona when I was there last year Lots of complaining that the houses are all being bought to turn into AB&B s and rendering the locals unable to buy any
They have a point

Just like Cornwall!

Callistemon21 Sat 20-Apr-24 18:17:28

Ooh, no need for such aggression!

I remember another poster, who has been missing lately, who always condemned 'Brits' and their behaviour overseas.

I did read the link, that's when I found out the headline was a tad disingenuous.

Not quite as your headline suggests, lemsip

.....................................................................

why don't you just read the link if you don't like the headline f g sake? I'm creating conversation!

LizzieDrip Sat 20-Apr-24 17:43:57

Doubt many will agree with me but second homes in beautiful areas are means little chance for locals to buy, I think they should stop any more second homes and the ones they have already should be heavily taxed, I wish they could be taken off them and given what they originally paid , why should hard working locals have no chance of living by family These second homes are usually only used a few weeks a year

Allsorts here’s one who definitely does agree with you. These second homes / Airb&b etc have decimated some village communities for the locals. IMO, second home ownership is immoral in a country where many young people find it impossible to buy their first home.

BlueBelle Sat 20-Apr-24 17:33:33

Oh that’s awful Seadragon and although I ve been to the Canaries on a few occasions and enjoyed it I agree with you Allsorts the locals should come first in housing
These super liners are a blooming menace in my opinion (I can’t think of anything worse for a holiday )
