😱
Not very PC is she? Heck.

MissAdventure Thu 25-Apr-24 09:16:05

Which has zero to do with Rayner's pants, the gutter, her caring for her mum, her being pregnant at 16, or anything else that has been used as ammunition against her.
You (or perhaps I) would like to think that women would champion her cause.

To come from such poor beginnings and be in the position she is now is no mean feat - particularly in the face of such discrimination.

Why can’t a person with an accent talk to anyone

Where we have come from our roots is unchangeable, and beyond our control.

Unchangeable … like Sunak’s height!

flappergirl Thu 25-Apr-24 09:07:06

No sense of propriety GSM? Then all I can say is that she'd be in very good company as a member of the opposition.

How did Churchill survive ,his body lay in state for three days, have a state funeral, voted the greatest Briton, not in
South Wales

Because he was conservative? Born in Blenheim Palace ?

'My dear you are ugly, but tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be ugly': Winston Churchill tops poll of history's funniest insults | The Independent

IIRC it was in reply to Bessie Braddock, who’d said, ā€˜Winston, you’re drunk!’

ā€˜Bessie, you’re ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober.’

The thing about Winston’s insults, IMO, was that there was an element of wit involved.

Ditto his replay to IIRC Nancy Astor, who’d said ā€˜If you were my husband, I’d put poison in your coffee.’

WC: ā€˜If you were my wife, I’d drink it.’

grin

Good grief, it’s like Downton Abbey here , causes me to wonder

TinSoldier Thu 25-Apr-24 09:01:05

The number of personal insults about Rayner just on this small board over the last two weeks far exceeds anything she said. So much for practising what one preaches.

Anyway … pint-sized is not a derogatory term. It is simply a colloquial term for diminutive (OED) - which Sunak is in terms of physical size and political stature. Loser? Well, we all know that the Tories are on target to lose the next election under his leadership so that’s also destined to be accurate.

Just for good measure (pun intended) - these from the Telegraph:

Planet of the Imps - why so many short men make high office and

Rishi Sunak draws the short straw meeting tallest MP … The PM is the most diminutive leader since Winton Churchill who was the same height … Rishi Sunak is used to being snapped with political giants.

Nothing to be ashamed of, either.
Any more than others should feel superior because of the circumstances they come from.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 25-Apr-24 08:52:08

Alan Johnson’s childhood was not dissimilar. Look at the difference between them. He became a man who could talk to anyone, prince or pauper, and was a credit to his Party when in government. He rose above his background and if he hadn’t have spoken of it people would have been none the wiser when hearing him speak. A gentleman. Rayner, by contrast, seems determined to appear as common and coarse as she can. She has no sense of propriety.

Anniebach Thu 25-Apr-24 08:49:37

And not of a child’s choosing

MissAdventure Thu 25-Apr-24 08:48:18

Precisely.

Anniebach Thu 25-Apr-24 08:45:42

I have not defended what she says, it’s the use of her childhood which was not of her choosing., her roots !

MissAdventure Thu 25-Apr-24 08:44:32

This thread has very little to do with what she said.
It's full up with people talking about the gutter, her knickers, her mother's mental health, her being pregnant young...

Nicenanny3 Thu 25-Apr-24 08:44:11

Because of Angela Rayner Labour will have lost the little man vote 😊

Does anyone wonder if Angela Rayner is hurt by the things that are said about her, and her Mother?

My opinion is resorting to insults, especially those of a personal nature, height, weight, looks etc. are unnecessary.

I imagine lots of politicians and others in the public eye might smile and shrug off insults but who knows how they feel on the inside?

I know how I would feel and that is hurt!

Oreo Thu 25-Apr-24 08:41:34

It’s one thing defending her roots, which I would always do, but that doesn’t mean defending everything she says.

Anniebach Thu 25-Apr-24 08:40:46

They are said by women here, probably mothers

Oreo Thu 25-Apr-24 08:38:59

Criticism of her voice, not accent’ criticism of what she says,
but mocking her from coming from a council house and had was a child carer is sickening

I agree, but those things aren’t said in the Commons to her by MP’s.

MissAdventure Thu 25-Apr-24 08:38:46

Like many of the comments on here, then.
Cringeworthy.

Contrary to what is written on here.

The general opinion is that Rayner wiped the floor with Dowden.

This was largely reflected in the absence of support from the backbenches.

Well, I watched this exchange and thought tho Angela came out fighting, it didn’t go all that well.Dowden hit back and managed to look amused.
I also thought that the pint sized loser remark, delivered with an excited triumphant grin was cringeworthy.

Joseann - I’m not keen on insults directed at looks . This was clearly scripted like so many of the insults hurled during pmq

Clearly scripted, so she had time to consider if it was a good idea.
I know PMQ’s is a rough and tumble, but what if Dowden had said an Opposition MP was obese or similar?
I can’t help feeling that AR in a really senior position is an accident waiting to happen. If only Keir was allowed to choose the deputy leader himself.
