A female teacher is among the three people stabbed by a girl at a high school in Wales.

Dozens of police cars and helicopters were sent to Amman Valley School in Carmarthenshire, south-west Wales, while classrooms were put under lockdown.

One person has been arrested, police said.

The injured teacher was flown by air ambulance 70 miles to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

The knife attacks are bad enough but I'm horrified that a pupil hit a teacher on the head 6 times with a hammer. And prior to that, 2 other pupils had been very badly beaten with the hammer whilst sleeping in their beds. What's causing this juvenile violence?

Thanks eazybee, that puts your use of protection into context. Surely they wouldn’t let this girl back to the school after such a serious incident, but I take your point about it being difficult to source support outside the mainstream, particularly in such a rural area, and the impact it that it would have on other pupils and the staff if she were to return to the school.

Children who are a danger to others need to be removed from mainstream but the process is extremely difficult; meanwhile innocent pupils are frightened and bullied.

A 'Remove' at the local comprehensive works well. Difficult, disruptive pupils are removed from their class mates and taught almost in isolation in a separate part of the school, every teacher in the school taking turns, and they work harder than ever before. They also get individual attention and praise when deserved, Every privilege has to be earned, and they are not returned to their normal classes until they have proved their behaviour has improved. The first transgression and they are back.
I doubt very much if this is the first incident of bad behaviour from this pupil. Bringing a flick knife into school is 'unusual', actually using it rare, but becoming more common.

Thirty years ago, my friend's husband, who was a teacher at a comprehensive in Birmingham, had to escort an injured child to hospital. The child had been shot in the leg by a fellow pupil.

Forty years ago, two of us teachers removed a knife from a threatening teenager, so this is not new.
Imo there are 2 sorts of situations. One us where the kid is generally waving a weapon around. The other is where they bring the weapon into school with the specific intent of harming a particular person, whether it's a teacher (Leeds a few years ago?) or a pupil.

All this stuff about teachers not being in control, I'm afraid makes me very cross. Right wing media making teachers' working lives so much harder.

My son was assaulted in school by a gang of thugs fellow pupils. He came home bleeding with a broken nose.
We parents were told "boys will be boys" and "there is no bullying in our school"
This was over 30 years ago. Luckily there were no knives involved.
He didn't want to return to school after that and we were able to move him to another school although it meant a 30mile round trip everyday.

Socialisation is all very well but throwing your child into the lions' den is not always a great idea.

DS was much happier at the new school and thrived.

A 13 year old girl has been arrested

I personally don’t think children should be home schooled for ‘their safety’ children need to be with other children to learn how to navigate socialising They have to go out into the world they need to learn how and that’s even more important than maths and English

I hope those injured will recover well and that the other pupils and staff will receive the protection they so clearly need.

How would protection be accomplished?

Can you explain what you mean by protection eazybee?

A special needs teacher who was injured in a stabbing at a Welsh secondary school suffered “four quite deep stab wounds”, her husband has said today.

I wonder if schools will change in future. More online learning.
After all work is going that way and it sets an example.

My heart turned over when the news came on.

No, lockdowns and learning online have caused a lot of problems for children, social anxiety being one of them.

Urmstongran Wed 24-Apr-24 20:24:42

Young adults need to socialise and bond together. As lockdown has proven, isolation breeds anxiety and insecurity.

My 2 granddaughter's, aged 12 and 14 , no longer go to school. They're home schooled now , just too many incidents at school. Teachers have no control over the kids

Cossy Wed 24-Apr-24 19:02:18

It’s absolutely shocking and not the first time, there needs to be more checks unfortunately upon entering schools, maybe airport type metal detectors. Awful and tragic

Mel1967 Wed 24-Apr-24 18:58:25

Knives are one of my greatest fears.
My Husband is a Teacher - he has been physically assaulted by a pupil (not with a knife).
They do regular bag searches at his school - no knives yet.
I also worry about knives when my son & his girlfriend go on nights out.
Either of them could be stabbed by some random without realising.

Casdon Wed 24-Apr-24 18:42:20

It’s horrible. Unfortunately it’s been happening in UK schools for years too. Last year a boy stabbed a young male teacher in Tewkesbury, the year before one boy stabbed another somewhere in Cumbria. Knives must be easy to carry and difficult to detect without searching pupils.

maddyone Wed 24-Apr-24 18:30:12

I was a teacher but thankfully my three have chosen different careers.

Grammaretto Wed 24-Apr-24 18:29:25

It's terrible!
I hope the teacher pulls through.

It isn't like the Dunblane massacre GSM. That was a madman shooting small children. This is a pupil turning on her teachers and fellow students.
More like what we have sadly got used to seeing in USA.

Shelflife Wed 24-Apr-24 18:20:58

My ' child ' has also left teaching . Behaviour of students had deteriorated, teachers no longer have the respect of their pupils. Many parents unable / unwilling to accept that their child is rude and badly behaved. Obviously not all children/ parents but enough to make teaching very difficult indeed. The stress is unbelievable!! AC now in a very different job , less money but less stress!!!!!

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 24-Apr-24 15:48:43

Remember Dunblane, CrazyH.
