Humza Yusaf's resignation speech

What a joy it was to listen to, not for political reasons, but because of his command of language and oratorical skills.

His speech was measured with a beautifully chosen vocabulary and a measured delivery.

Nowadays when Boris Johnsons expostulations and arm waving is considered the epitome of political oratory. It was just so nice to hear a politician who really did have a command of language and delivery.

He may of course have been talking drivel, I wasn't really concenrating on what he said, but how he said it.

I know, OldFrill, and I have amended that statement. You must have skimmed over it. And Yes, in Scotland, Labour and Tories are in step.

I didn't "skim over it", my response was posted before your amendment.

Oh, not me, Oreo! 😊

Yes, the pictures.

My DB called them The Flicks.

Did she mention the double seats in the back row? 😁

My last word on ye olde cinema practices 😄
She didn’t mention double back row seats but it sounds very cosy, but she did tell me that kissing and canoodling, lovely word that, went on at the back of the cinema, or ‘pictures’ as she calls them.I bet you could tell a tale or two Callistemon21 but that’s for a different thread.😃

A well-delivered speech from a politician with a moral compass. It is unbelievable that anyone could object to taxpayer money contributing to UNWRA- a humanitarian aid agency addressing the starvation and deprivation of basic needs that Israel has inflicted on a Gaza - and for years. That especially when a huge proportion of taxpayer money goes on so- called defence ie military and weapons to collaborate in the genocide of the Palestinian people.

The kerfuffle over the UNWRA donation wasn't because it was UNWRA, it was whether the Ministerial Code was broken by Yousef suddenly, and seemingly, unilaterally upping the amount and switching it to UNWRA when it was earmarked to a different cause. I'm not sure the full report was ever released. Where's the Michael Matheson report btw? SNP do tend to surround their investigations in secrecy and that's partly what spurs anti SNP controversy.

Plus UNWRA had members who actively took part in the atrocities on Israeli families in early October and many who openly celebrated what hamas did.

Oreo - if you are friendly enough to know your postman's family, why not tell him you'd like your post pushed through?

He may not realise what he's doing as I know rounds keep on increasing and he's probably rushing.

Just a thought.

We had that same thought ages ago 😁
I and DP have both had a word in his shell like but it still continues.

I read a lot of the threads on Gransnet and feel that there are definitely pockets of underlying racism within some of the comments made! This is my perception of what I read ! I am not making accusations just saying what I perceive! If I am wrong in what I understand people are saying then I apologise !

OldFrill, if you are both voting against the same policy, then you are voting together, simples, but back to your comment about Labour voting to save the Union. Why is keeping Scotland in the Union worth shredding your principles?

You suggested they were in alliance. They were not.
I've never suggested Labour voted to Dave the Union.

Maremia Fri 03-May-24 13:16:40

Sorry, that was GrannyGravy13's comment, about saving the Union.

OldFrill, why would a left leaning party, Labour, chose to vote with a right leaning party, Tories, (their arch enemies in another country), against another left leaning party, SNP. Where is the integrity in that?

They aren't voting 'with' each other, they are voting 'against' Scotgov. You dong seem able to discern the difference. Neither agree with whatever issue they are voting against, they may have very different reasons for not agreeing.

Maybe it has more to do with being pro the union that Labour and Conservatives vote in the same way?

Wyllow3, the Police found that there was no crime involved in the speech under discussion, and yet all these GNs who know better.

The speech in question was reported under the new Scottish hate laws more than anything else.

Just for the record I never posted that it was a crime, in my opinion it was in bad taste considering the demographics of Scotland.

Maremia Fri 03-May-24 12:03:49

Just if you have the statistics to hand, Casdon. What percentage of Scots voted for the SNP and the Greens in the last election?

Diehard SNP supporters are not noted for recognising the faults of their leaders or the fantasy that is their cause.

To be fair, it’s not a fantasy. Almost 50% of the population of Scotland still want independence. It’s a separate issue to the SNP troubles, and it’s not going to go away if the SNP were to collapse

Less than 45% voted for independence in 2014, the SNP has been hemorrhaging members and funding for the past few years so, again, fantasy figures are the best the SNP can proffer

How many Scots want independence in 2024?
Voting intention in a referendum on Scottish independence 2018-2024. As of April 2024, 53 percent of adults in Scotland said they would not support Scotland being independent from the United Kingdom, compared with 47 percent who would support it.10 Apr 2024

Other recent polls show very similar results. This is the latest poll result I could find. I’m not making a political point here, just stating the facts.

Yes OldFrill, there has been a 'pact' or 'tactical voting' in Scotland, where Labour has given its votes to the Tory candidate and vice versa, to try to defeat SNP.

The SNP with the Bute House Agreement were a majority. The opposition do tend to vote against the incumbent government. Don't actually see your point.
