Immigration and migrants

I have to comment on a new thread about some of the comments on here relating to immigrants, entering either via illegal means or via correct channels.

Those entering our country illegally, for whatever reason, make up just 1% of our overall population.

Often, but not always, they've made arduous physically and emotionally demanding journeys just to reach Europe. Often, but not always, their second language is English and sometimes they have links to the UK.

1% of our population!

Yet so much time is given to portraying them in the media as men pretending to be boys, criminals, exploiters, scroungers etc etc etc

Perhaps before swallowing all the "bad" stories about immigrants portrayed in our media, encouraged by our govt., you should, a) remember these people are human beings, b) we are here safe and sound only due to an accident of birth.

If you must "blame" someone for this situation, blame the corrupt govts from which many of these people come, blame the traffickers, blame our inept govt.

We could (not saying we should!) have housed every single asylum seeker in the last two years using the money our govt has so freely given to France and Rwanda.

Think and research before you negatively comment about immigrants.

What a load of nonsense. Ask you son to investigate and give us all an update.

The GP’s surgery in my son’s village provides healthcare for immigrants in a centre in the neighbouring village. They can’t be in two places at once. How many of us get ‘home visits’ nowadays? The immigrants do.

So lets get this straight? I know you love a bit of evidence.

Doctors are visiting immigrants ( whatever that means) and the indiginous population is going without?

There are no additional doctors. The practice covers several villages. Work it out.

Horribly rude but never mind. I suggest a strongly worded email to the Practice Manager. Look forward to an update.

Ask the Practice Manager whether the practice demonstrated that taking up a contract doesn’t affect their routine work. A straight question may get you a straight answer as to exactly what is affecting their routine work.

It’s not my practice. It’s my son’s and his family’s. I have no locus standii.

I would assume that GSM and other posters who are blaming migrants for all the problems of the NHS also object to GPs attending patients in prisons, nursing homes etc, even after their practices have demonstrated that it doesn't affect their routine work. After all, the inhabitants of HMP's include a higher proportion of criminals and liars than do the migrant centres

Very good point Elegran.

I wondered if if might come to a statement like that, GSM. You can't know what the other posters on here are experiencing, or family troubles. We are not blind. Shortages of GP's are systemic

The Health foundation:
"In 2021/2022 there was a shortage of around 4,200 full time equivalent (FTE) fully qualified, permanently employed GPs in England. Under current policy, this is projected to rise to around 6,700 FTE GPs in 2023/24 – the end of the current parliament. And by 2030/31, it could reach 8,800 FTE GPs"

Extra responsibilities make coverage thinner, do they not?

GPS get extra contractual payments for attending group facilities, which includes prisons, nursing homes, and detention centres. The work is optional, and if a practice takes up a contract they have to demonstrate that it doesn’t affect their routine work.

I understand those who are running away from wars in their countries but for the rest I would say,
If they want to immigrate, do it the correct way.

If you know for a fact that is the case, and have evidence that the service to local patients has deteriorated as a result of your GP practice taking on an additional contract you should take it up with the local NHS commissioning organisation Germanshepherdsmum because the GP business will be in breach of their NHS contract.

GSM. never a truer word said. Why are others so blind to the facts?

Perhaps they have to experience the consequences, as sadly you are doing. Then their tune might change.

For those of you onhere who informed me that my long NHS hospital wait had nothing to do with the great number of migrants entering the country.

My reply is , if the millions the government has spent supporting migrants had instead been spent on more Doctors and nurses plus hospitals I may not been in the position of waiting 15months to see a Consultant.

Most of the millions spent on asylum seekers came from money allocated to the Overseas Aid budget, it's only since July 2023, when this government made them "illegal" has the money come from home budgets. It would not have been spent in the NHS.

‘Others’ actually have a better understanding of the facts about the impact on the NHS utterbliss. It’s easy to be taken in by the shouting about the migrants, but the impact they have on the operation of the NHS is small, not significant, most of NHS capacity is used by elderly people and the migrants are young fit people.

The Kings report that I posted just above above Casdon makes that point very strongly, as well as the huge shortages of staff. Worth a read before "Blame".

Wyllow3 Fri 03-May-24 18:22:34

We just disagree, which is fine in a discussion. But to disagree is not to be blind, it is a matter of opinion given what we perceive to be the truth.

There are more than enough who are making calls on the NHS - towards which we pay but they don’t.

People talk like we should be grateful to all the people from overseas who work in our hospitals. Well we are because most of them are here legally.

At the same time, our hospitals are full of people who are here illegally. I personally know about a dozen people who have had to pay about £15,000 for hip replacements because of the waiting lists.

That is just not true. What is it that these young men are suffering from that means they need hip replacements? A very basic understanding of the NHS is sufficient to understand that doctors specialise.

What’s not true? I didn’t say young men from the boats need hip ops. I said people I know have needed hip ops.

I also know that doctors specialise in several areas of surgery not just hips.

But our hospitals are not full of people who are here illegally are they?

I thought that GPs got paid extra for each patient over a certain age too - is it 80?

It makes not a jot of difference when trying to make an appointment, even a phone appointment.

GP lists are weighted so that some categories of patients attract a higher payment in the global sum the practice is paid by the NHS. It’s based on number, sex, age, and chronic conditions.

Casdon Fri 03-May-24 17:41:43

I didn’t mean to infer that GPs’ lack of availability impacted on utterbliss’s situation. If they have to visit the migrants it means that they are less available to their regular patients. I know that home visits happen for the housebound, but the migrants are not housebound - they are free to come and go.
