The problem with voter fraud lies with postal voting not in-person voting at polling stations. The ID regs made no difference to postal voters.

This is what I find really ridiculous about ID requirements for whatever purpose. You are who you are but in today’s world you need a piece of paper to tell you who you are. If people know who you are that should be enough in many circumstances.

It doesn't appear to have involved personation at a polling station, petra, which is what voter ID is claimed to counter.

This election fraud was pretty big.

Doesn’t matter if the I/d is out of date, as long as you are recognisable on it.

If someone comes in with an unacceptable form of I/d, the election staff have to record it on a form, then if/when they return with correct I/d, that has to be noted as well.

Boris’ election staff should have done this, am sure they followed correct procedures.

Not quite on the Voter ID topic, but a fairly close cousin :- for anyone wanting a little pin money, DO consider applying to be part of your District Council's Electoral team? You could be part of the team at a Polling Station (it's an early start, and a late finish though!) and/or at a Count, often at a Sports Centre, and that could be overnight (a General Election) or a more civilised daytime for many local ones.

I worked on a count, for a GE (2019) and it was really interesting to see all the checks that went on to get the numbers right. One odd thing I saw, a few strange people write some sort of insult, or message, on their voting slip (eg "Boris is a berk", "Corbyn is a Leftie terrorist", "Down with capitalism", "Clean up doggie poo from our pavements" . . . .all sorts of stuff!).

The folk who write that guff apparently think their message will be taken by express messenger to the Prime Minister at the time. In fact, the 'spoiled papers' get counted up, placed in a rubber band, then they sit on a dusty shelf in a cupboard for a few years until the slips all get disposed of. No hotline to anyone of influence, sorry. The closest to fame that any such message will reach is if part of the scribble has gone through a box where the X is usually placed, and that may cause the agent of a candidate to try and claim that slip as a vote for them!

For LizzieDrip -- The Electoral teams round the country, in polling stations and at counts, take their work and duties very seriously. No surprise he was turned away, but he did indeed return later, and it was reported that it may well have been deliberate (!).

For Iam64, "many disenfranchised, too poor to have passport or driving licence" -- well, perhaps, but try reading the guidelines? This site has them -- just remove the gaps in the ID >>> https:// www. electoralcommission .org. uk/ voting-and-elections/voter-id/accepted-forms-photo-id >>> there is a huge list of acceptable IDs, inc BUS PASSES of course, you can get a FREE Voter Authority Certificate, and apparently (news to me) an Anonymous Elector's Document (for those folk living in hiding, perhaps 'witness protection' or something similar?). The rules for Scotland, Wales and NI all differ a little, of course!

People might try and remember why Voter ID was brought in, as there were instances in certain constituencies of voting fraud. The overall numbers are tiny, BUT, the way our system works, if a couple of local councillors were voted in by fraud, that could tip the balance on a given Council? And there have been MPs elected by a majority of a few hundreds, or even less, so clearly a little local fraud could make a big difference?

This displays the same attitude as those notorious parties......rules don't apply to him.

I think he "forgot" intentionally. Either testing the system showing a publication or something with reference to him or just wanting a bit publicity. He returned within a very few minutes with acceptable ID.

I don’t understand why so many of you are getting your knickers in a twist over this non event. He’s not even an MP anymore.

Wouldn't surprise me if he did it on purpose. Not sure why, but don't trust him an inch. Any news is better than no news.

When voting, a couple of helpers were worrying that a man who hadn’t given an acceptable ID stated that he was returning home to get his tv licence to prove who he said he was.
They happily accepted my bus pass with a nearly 20 yr old photo on it.

It was a publicity gimmick - made the news and we all heard about!! Boris is shrewd - he knew what he was doing.

I have heard tell that Carrie is taking him to be microchipped, in case he gets lost and has no identity on him.
