By-election and local authority results.

It appears that the polls which are showing massive results for labour are so far correct.

The by-election in Liverpool was won by Labour with a 26% swing. That is huge!

The local elections are showing the same sort of swing away from the Tories.

Oh that is interesting katie59

I would be grateful if you could send me the data that suggests a hung parliament.

I have looked but can’t find it.

Don’t read too much into todays results, votes in a GE are different, it would help if they could take some seats off the SNP as well as Tories

To get an outright majority they need 325 say 350 for a comfortable majority that’s a long way from 203 they have now, Labour supporters should not be complacent.
I hope they do get a landslide but no guarantees.

Looking at the electoral map so far, the figures don’t bare your assertion out that there will be a hung parliament.

I do, however accept that the GE result will probably be tighter than todays results suggest. I have never thought any different.

Don't be so bloody condescending Cossy.

I would love to elaborate but I'm on my way out. Travelling to do the school run.

It wasn’t meant to be condescending or patronising, so apologies. You were the one who made a daft comment for not voting labour!

I have no idea who to vote for come the GE. It won't be KS unless he's work out that a woman cannot have a penis.

The idea is to vote for the party whose ethos and policies are most closely aligned to your own, not any one individual.

If we didn’t vote for a party based on silly things their leader once said the Tories wouldn’t keep being elected, based on their most recent leaders!

The question in my mind is, will these results make it so clear to Sunak that the electorate just doesn't want the tories that he will call a GE for the summer, or will he just keep the government limping on until the very last minute to cause maximum devastation for the next government to clear up?

I think he’ll hang on til the bitter end.

I just want the GE out of the way so we can move forward and hopefully get our economy on a more even keel.

I’m not taking anything for granted that we will end up with a labour majority, Tories could battle back in (😱😱😱) or we could end up with a hung parliament or a coalition. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

By elections and or local council elections used to be considered as an opportunity for a protest vote. I don’t think this is the case with yesterday’s polling. I think the Tories will get annihilated at the GE - whenever it is held. I’m in two minds though about this. I want the Tories out they’ve made such a mess of pretty much everything but I’m wary of Labour, who will romp it. Eek!

I think most of us are a little wary now whoever takes the reins.

I found it amusing that Boris was sent back home for his photo ID. grin

I thought he was an attention seeking by forgetting it, but at least he was turned away.

mae13 Fri 03-May-24 12:48:00

And did Boris Johnson REALLY forget about ID........or is he simply addicted to publicity?

urms live dangerously and give Labour a go😄😄

It can’t get a lot worse!

Not sure about that.

We are not in for a repeat of the Blair/Brown government which many voters are hoping for. Keir Starmer and the shadow cabinet are not in the same league. And of course there isn't a magic money tree.

Any honeymoon period will be very short for the incoming government. There will be a flood of wage demands/strikes. Voters will expect the NHS to improve and that certainly won't happen quickly.

I think Sunak want the flights to Rwanda to be up and running before he calls a GE.

Just in time for the new parliament to stop them, even if it’s a hung parliament (quite likely)

Be careful what you vote for or do not vote. Is there a Commonsense party, that would be good and make a nice change. Have a lovely day everybody.

loopyloo Fri 03-May-24 11:22:10

Will Rishi be out by Monday?

Visgir1 Fri 03-May-24 11:09:00

MaizieD... I do know that, as I was helping out with a campaign yesterday.
I'm talking about the future 10 - 20 years time.
There will need to be significant changes across the board to entice the young teenagers of today to Vote.

It’s a bit early to tell but Labour is only picking up half of the Conservative votes at the moment.
How would this translate at the GE?

Logically it will do Labour brilliantly because the Tory vote is split.

Such a poor turnout ?

No different from the usual turnout on local elections.

Look at the electoral map that will give you a pretty up to date idea as to what will happen at an election.

Last year the Tories had the worst local election results forever.

This year they are worse.

So the important thing is the trend not the level of the turnout.

That is why you will see Tories absolutely panicking today.

Low turn out again everywhere. It makes me wonder what the much younger generations will do?
They certainly won't go out to vote so will it be on an App??

But there is always a low turnout for council elections and by elections.

I'd've thought people knew this by now.. I don't think it has anything to do with the age of the voters.

^I assume the Tory candidate in your area must have had party sponsorship to send leaflets out in that case^

Thanks Casdon. Yes I think he probably did - all the more reason not to vote for him! TBH I find it a bit weird that the PCC should be affiliated to any party - surely they should be independent of party politicsconfused

I agree, party politics aren’t relevant in these roles. The whole appointment process seems wrong to me.

Agree

It's a sad state of affairs when people advocate 'living dangerously' in voting Labour.

Labour does have clear policies and the drive to begin what may be a long process of change.

There will be mistakes of course, and misjudgements but Labour has always had bad press from the right-wing media, who are quite frankly, preparing to demolish every policy that new Labout government will implement.

Reading posts on here disappoints me in how much people are manipulated by the media and for mostly intelligent people, don't seem able to think for themselves.

The swing from the Tories to Reform is mirroring the influence UKIP had on Cameron's government and led to the disastrous Brexit vote.

The Tories will see this as a sign to move even more to the right, hence Sunak's panicing over the Rwanda issue.

To say they have so much power and influence over the media, they seem to be very poor at actually reading what the electorate really want.
