What should the Tories do now?

As a Conservative who realises that Labour will win, my concern is about women’s rights and whether Sir K Starmer will support women 100% and be prepared to say that someone with male parts is definitely not a woman, he has seemed uncertain at times. 😏

If I were Sunak, I'd spend every penny in the UK coffers, get massive loans to build new hospitals, increase defence, increase social care. Train loads of people to be Doctors & Nurses.

But as the UK doesn't have 'coffers', but is able to issue its own money in any amount it likes, so long as there are resources available on which to spend it, that wouldn't be the killer plan you might think it is.

However, it's the last thing that the current tory government would dream of doing because they are completely against increasing state spending..

I assume that the election will be in the autumn, as really it has got to be the latest that Sunak can call one. If he goes any later, he will competing with Christmas, NHS usual winter chaos etc, and I can’t see a single advantage to wait until then.

He could go in the summer I suppose and muck up peoples holidays, but that may have the advantage of scuppering the student vote. Desperation might prompt that.

I’ve heard the scuppering the student vote argument, must be doing the rounds. Have also heard that he’ll call it at the Tory conf so early/mid Nov. But then July is when the electorate is most cheerful….

No one has said a change of government would miraculously improve everything that’s gone downhill in the last 14 years. Austerity has crippled our public services and combined with privatising as much as possible to benefit Tory donors, it will take a great deal of unpicking and rebuilding. Starmer comes across as sincere and hopefully runs a tight ship. He may be perceived as boring, but if a non boring politician is a Johnson or a Trump, then I say let’s have a bit of a boring steady hand. Yes our system needs a lot of reform, but the Tories efforts to turn back the clock have sown deep divisions rather than unity. I don’t know how anyone could want more of the same.

I think the results of our local elections shows two things, a) apathy, the turn out is pathetic, b) people are fed up with this govt.

I don't think calling an election now is the right thing to do. The recent elections have shown how confused people are. The turn-out was low because many Conservative voters chose not to vote.
The vast majority of people in this country are working class. This means that, in theory, our government should always be Labour. The Conservatives can only get into power if the lower classes vote for them. Johnson knew that, which is why he visited working class areas and persuaded people to vote for him.
We need a party which cares about this country and will do what is best for it. The only ones who seem to are the Reform party. Everyone else is working to a certain agenda, which is destroying Britain.

Cynically, I think they’ll choose October because that’s when many prices will rise as a result of the new Brexit-negotiated border checks. Of course, I thought they’d choose May for the same reason, before they delayed the full implementation again, and they could do that again and cling on a bit longer.

There are rumours (no idea whether they're true) that it will be about the time students are going off to university and might not have thought to register in their place of study.

They can do absolutely nothing about the things which really concern most of the electorate; polluted waterways, inefficient and expensive railways, shortage of police, huge delays to trials in the criminal justice system, crumbling schools and shortage of teachers and support workers, NHS on its knees and barely coping, lack of social care workers, prices still rising, high mortgage and rental rates... All the things that people really care about in their daily lives - while Sunak is pratting on about Rwanda....

I totally agree that charisma is the last thing we need now. I do think Starmer, much in a similar way was Corbyn, is often misjudged and people who do not fully know his background label him as elitist and Tory. I prefer to think of him as a Centralist and a safe pair of hands, which, imo, is actually what both our economy and people need atm.

I’ve not seen anything in Labour’s manifesto about opening the floodgates iro of immigration nor spend, spend, spend as the right consistency accuse.

For those describing Starmer as boring or mind numbing, I would suggest that this country has had enough of 'charismatic' politicians such as Johnson. Frankly, the delay in calling a GE is going to bite Sunak; it is increasingly obvious that the only motivation is the preservation of what remains of the Conservative party, there is no consideration for the electorate or the country as a whole.

I think your comment that “Labour is deluded…” quite interesting. They are campaigning, would it be better for them to say, “vote for us, we cannot do anything if we get into power because our country is already screwed” (polite way, didn’t want a ban)
