Another Tory MP defects to Labour!

Yet another defection by a Tory MP today. Natalie Elphick has obviously done this to make a point. She’s already said she’s standing down at the next GE but clearly wanted to cause a rumpus for the Tories. Her statement is scathing about Sunak. At this rate we won’t need a GE - all the Tory MPs will just voluntarily move over to the Labour seatsgrin

put through a selection process

What would have happened if he had said no. How would that have damaged him.

Surely candidates who want to stand for a particular party are out through a selection process?

I'm sure, had he said to her that her very right-wing politics did not resonate with the ethos of the Labour Party and all it stands for, that might have been a better way forward.
She has used him.

Many Labour MPs are not at all happy with his decision.

I have seen nothing to say she’s standing down at the next election; as far as I can see, she’s planning to stand as a Labour candidate. I’d be delighted to be wrong, if anyone has a link to a reliable source?

I’ve said before that some of their policies were making it more difficult for me, a natural Labour voter, to vote for them. This is a further, and large, step in my alienation from them.

If she is standing, and I’ve read she isn’t, it most def will NOT be in her current constituency as it’s been confirmed that the current Labour selection stands.

Starmer appears damned if he does and cursed if he doesn’t. He’s playing the ridiculous political games all parties play.

Because what does MPs leaving the Tories actually matter. We know what is going to happen to the conservatives in the election. The story is the decision made by the labour party.

What a surprise, GB news concentrates on any tensions in L party and not rats leaving sinking ship

Agreed Wyllow. Indeed, much of the noise around this is directed at Labour rather than the Conservatives. It appears that whatever KS does is wrongconfused

It's important, though.

Not a good move by Starmer which is worrying. Other Labour MPs who aren't happy will be questioning his judgement and this is not a good time for that to happen.

Should have refused her, headline ‘Labour doesn’t want tory’

Urmstongran Thu 09-May-24 09:15:05

Andrew Pierce chatting on GBNews says he hasn’t spoken to one Labour MP who thinks her defection is a good idea. Starmer apparently made an executive decision, took her in and didn’t even run it by the Chief Whip. 😱 tensions on the shadow Front Bench are simmering…

Grandmabatty Thu 09-May-24 09:06:50

She is standing down.

lemsip Thu 09-May-24 09:04:32

has he promised her a place in his cabinet if labour wins

Visgir1 Thu 09-May-24 08:38:38

I wouldn't trust an MP who swops sides.
Not surprised there are some Labour MP's who don't share the enthusiasm of Starmer.

Iam64 Thu 09-May-24 08:32:46

She won’t stand at the next election thankfully. There’s an identified Labour candidate who has been campaigning for some time.
I’m not happy with her representing Labour. I agree with others, an MP who defects to another part should trigger a by election.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 09-May-24 08:05:18

Link to BBC News confirming she won’t be standing.

Not in Dover she isn’t. I’m sure she is standing down.

There so many Tory MPs standing down it is hard to keep up.

This is only a nine minute wander though - will soon be forgotten, but I do think Labour has work to do to convince its Labour supporters.

Well as Sunak says he is getting on with the job and “delivering” but now it seems he is only delivering the Tories over to Labour. The right wing are pushing for more movement to the right and Sunak is too weak to take charge and call a GE while he still has what is left of his Party. If he really cared about this country he would settle the situation before any more damage is done but I fear they are seeking to leave the Labour Party with as dire problem as possible.

Galaxy Thu 09-May-24 06:50:41

It's an appalling decision, I say this as a Starmer supporter. I for one will be ignoring every word Starmer says in the future about violence against women, his words will be utterly meaningless.

nanna8 Thu 09-May-24 06:32:16

Just shows how lacking in a moral compass both Conservative and Labour are. I wouldn't vote for either party. They disgust me and yes, ours are as bad here.

Allsorts Thu 09-May-24 06:11:32

If I was Labour I would tell her no thanks. Just look at what she was saying about them three weeks ago. She hunts with the hounds and runs with the hares.

vegansrock Thu 09-May-24 06:06:45

Maybe she’s had a Damascene conversion, I doubt it, but the one sinner repenteth and all that…

With all these Conservative defections, Labour is in danger of making itself unelectable.

😁
They'll be further to the right than the Tories.

I liked Neil Kinnocks's observation:
"We have got to be choosy to a degree about who we allow to join our party because it's a very broad church but churches have walls and there are limits."

'... and then there were none'!

I did say a while ago that with all the by-elections (plus now the defections) we won't need to bother with a General Election 😃

Yes, Bob Dylan is still with us.
