Another Tory MP defects to Labour!

Yet another defection by a Tory MP today. Natalie Elphick has obviously done this to make a point. She’s already said she’s standing down at the next GE but clearly wanted to cause a rumpus for the Tories. Her statement is scathing about Sunak. At this rate we won’t need a GE - all the Tory MPs will just voluntarily move over to the Labour seatsgrin

I agree with you Eloethan. I seriously question Starmer's judgment here.

Eloethan Sun 12-May-24 23:22:01

She is an unpleasant woman and if the Labour Party thinks that someone from the right of the Conservative Party, who has made some really inflammatory comments on several issues, should be welcomed with open arms I think they will alienate many Labour Party voters and members.

I think it is irrelevant that she will not be standing in a General Election. The message this sends out is all wrong, in my opinion.

Farzanah Sun 12-May-24 12:20:17

I think Starmer knew more than enough about Ms Elphick before the latest revelation, and in fact (according to X) one MP has joked that she is the first Labour member of the ERG 🤣
I think it makes the Labour Party look pathetic. Any self respecting LP members should be leaving in droves.

Oreo

The pic of Starmer looking lovingly at her makes me cringe.

He looks quite besotted in some photos 🙄

If the influencing of a judge is an issue now, why wasn’t it when she was a Tory MP? It feels an awful lot like deflection to me.

I read this morning that there are a number of other likely defections coming, let’s hope they are more Dan Poulters rather than Natalie Elphickes.

Lomo123

@plunger. 100% you are correct.

No - she is standing down. Labour has a candidate already

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 12-May-24 08:38:12

He would have known, Wyllow. But he just couldn’t resist scoring a political point.

Galaxy Sun 12-May-24 07:07:06

Well they knew she tried to influence the judge so I would say that's the least surprising development.

Lomo123 Sun 12-May-24 02:50:46

@plunger. 100% you are correct.

Wyllow3 Sat 11-May-24 21:54:48

Latest to come out - I hope Starmer now chucks her out

He wasn't told

The LP or LINO as I now know them, have lost all moral compass, and I agree Starmer is showing us who he is and as long as he is leader of a party of whom I have hitherto been a staunch supporter, will never vote for them again.

Plunger Sat 11-May-24 19:13:28

Knows she'll loose her seat as a Tory , hoping to keeping as a Labour MP. Just there for the money no morals whatsoever.

Casdon Sat 11-May-24 15:29:46

I think what they say Ilovecheese* is that people make the position suit their own narrative.

Ilovecheese Sat 11-May-24 14:29:51

They say, don't they, that is someone shows you who they are you should believe them. Keir Starmer is showing us who he is, we should believe him and stop pretending that he has some sort of grand plan to be different when he is in power.

sluttygran Sat 11-May-24 12:42:02

When Starmer takes over, as it seems he will, I expect things to go on much as before.
We appear to have two right-wing Tory parties going head-to-head with the inevitable result that nothing at all will change.

SillyOma Sat 11-May-24 12:41:23

I agree completely, makes a nonsense of what labour are supposed to stand for.

Barbadosbelle Sat 11-May-24 12:36:24

..

Whitewavemark2

You are so right. And how she had the nerve after years of abusive remarks about both KS and the Labour Party - and yet he’s accepted her! Very very odd.

Nannashirlz Sat 11-May-24 11:59:54

From what ppl in her area said on tv she won’t be missed as she done nothing for her area. But i think if you In a party and ppl have voted for you in that party you clearly don’t take your role or voters seriously so you should step down completely it ain’t the honky konky lol

Iam64 Thu 09-May-24 20:20:05

She’s apologised of course for her disgraceful comments about the women her former husband abused

Politics is drama, we may wish that wasn’t so but it is. Better shevd4f€cuts to Labour than Reform. She’ll be gone at the GE

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-May-24 15:24:35

Well it doesn’t seem to have affected Labour negatively.

Polls

Labour 48%

Tory. 18%

Exactly. A woman on a mission, and Starmer happy to collude with her - about which many of his MPs are seriously unhappy.

LizzieDrip Thu 09-May-24 14:26:11

Galaxy I too am a paying member of the Labour Party. I’m sorry you see this issue as a line for you, and I sincerely hope you’ll find it in your heart (and head) to vote for Labour in the GE.

The Conservative Party has dominated British politics throughout the 20th & 21st Centuries. Arguably, political naivety by Labour has contributed to this. We’re not used to, and feel uncomfortable, seeing our politicians playing the political game. If KS is going to lead the party to secure victory he has to play this game. Or, we take the moral high ground of ‘we’re better than that’ and sit on the opposition benches for the foreseeable future. Politics can be a nasty business.
