Yesterday in the Daily Fail was a report of a 60 year old woman who whilst waiting at a bus stop was was stabbed three times in a failed attempt to snatch her handbag.

This was in London.

Yet I see no report of this incident on the BBC News site do they not think this is important news?

They seem to have plenty of space for the ludicrous outfits stuff.

Casdon Fri 10-May-24 08:49:56

It was reported.

Yes I saw that. It was just one small paragraph way below all the celebrity stuff. I didn't hear it on the news or elsewhere.

Jaxjacky Fri 10-May-24 08:52:14

I saw it on their site yesterday, someone was arrested for the murder.

Fairislecable Fri 10-May-24 09:08:54

Oh thank you Casdon. I didn’t see it yesterday or today and perhaps as a woman of a similar age it really resonated and shocked me.

Perhaps I should toughen up and realise that this knife crime is so prevalent that we should get used to it.

Unfortunately it’s so prevalent that such events are rarely headline news.

It was reported on BBC Breakfast this morning a man has been arrested. I don’t carry a handbag when out and about unless I’m going to be mostly in the car I do live in London, poor women just minding her own business.

Football and celeb news always have priority over 'proper' news, at least where the BBC is concerned. It's an insult to the viewers.

Fairislecable Fri 10-May-24 09:44:34

I am sick of ‘celebrity’ stuff in the news and the television is chock full of it.

If the show is called Celebrity ……….. anything I instinctively turn over.

Athrawes Fri 10-May-24 09:50:02

I agree Fairislecable. So boring

Sadly an incident like this doesn't make too many waves. The media seem to think we are far more interested in the vacuous Kardashian clan with their see through dresses and enormous rears. It's what sells papers to the masses these days.

Jackiest Fri 10-May-24 11:07:40

There is a murder in London every 3 or 4 days.

Jackiest

You will find a small paragraph hidden away .sad to say 😢

As Casdon says, it was reported.Unfortunately as others also say, this kind of casual stabbing is almost common in London.
What did catch my eye tho was the OP use of The Daily Fail, which reminded me of something I read on GN just the other day.It may have been MissAdventure who said something along the lines of ‘it’s amazing how many discarded Daily Mails are around or finding one to read at the dentist’ cos nobody will admit to buying and reading it.😂
Sorry MissA if it wasn’t you or I’ve misquoted, it amused me no end.

The man was apprehended quickly, charged, and is awaiting trial.

There was a lot of speculation, online, that the man and the pensioner were known to each other.

I expect it’ll all become clear during the trial.

Talking of stabbings, the 17 year old who was a suspect in Dorset has been cleared.

M0nica Tue 28-May-24 11:36:14

I rarely see any of the celebrity rubbish. However deaths from stabbing are so common, up 5% in the past year, nearly 50,000 in total (stabbings, not deaths) that they are barely newsworthy.

And yet it was the BBC being criticised for failing to report this whereas the Daily Mail did 🤔

It is shocking; bag snatching has always happened but to just kill an innocent woman for her handbag?
The random knife attacks are very worrying indeed.

Re phones, I was born in 1949 and TBH I can’t remember not having a phone at home - and we were far from well off - my parents were permanently skint. The phone was used as little as possible, though - as was common in that era. IIRC dh’s father used to make him and his brothers pay for the occasional short calls they made.

Phones were usually sited in the hall, which would invariably be freezing in (pre central heating) winter, so that meant even less inducement for unnecessary chats.

Sorry, wrong thread, mods pls move to the Starmer is a good bloke one.
