Smashing glass round the Magna Carta and claiming the government is breaking the law.

maddyone Sun 12-May-24 23:16:54

I wish our laws would be applied properly to people such as these who commit criminal damage or block roads. Both are offences but apparently protesters are rarely prosecuted for committing criminal damage or blocking the highways, and if they are, it gets overturned or they get acquitted.
By all means protest, but do it within the law.

Do you think that theJust Stop Oil movement encouraged these two women to do what they did because it will lead people to look at them and just see them as two silly old dears and sigh and not realise that they are just as much vandals as if they had been 2 20 year old students.

I think they're leading lights in the Just Stop Oil movement, Extinction Rebellion etc.

The Reverend has previous as an Extinction Rebellion protester and a member of Christian Climate Action.
She has disrupted traffic, glued herself to the road, been arrested and convicted for preventing people accessing their place of work (conviction later overturned), climbed on a train during rush hour, preventing people from going to work, later acquitted by a jury.

Presumably she doesn't agree with trains as a mode of transport either.

p.s.
Thanks, MOnica.

Oh Jennifer Eccles, I so agree with you.
'Annoying little Greta Thunberg'.
Sums her up exactly.
I shall cherish that phrase.

M0nica Sun 12-May-24 18:29:49

Sorry, 'carbohydrate' should read 'hydrocarbon'

I would be much happier if instead of just stamping their feet like spoiled children these groups put forward clearly thought out and costed alternative policies.

I am involved in a group trying to stop a specific infrastructure development in our area (no further detail because identifying the infrastructure, would identify the group. Over 20 years our opposition, including a Public Inquiry has been successful because we have been able to employ experts and draw on the expertise of members to put forward cogent reasons why the development shouldn't go ahead and how the need for it can be met through practical and cheaper costed alternatives.

These Just Stop Oil protests have wealthy people behind them who can put up the money to do the same and the group can also fund raise among their membership.

To be fair -altho I admit it wasn’t a great thing to do - it made me laugh that it was two old ladies instead of young people. And the expert they had on the news said something that while it wasn’t good he supported their cause and thought we needed mass action. Good for him!!!!

M0nica Sun 12-May-24 15:50:57

Even if we make transport carbohydrate free, oil will still be needed to make plastics, drugs and a host of everyday articles.

But net zero has nothing to do with whether we use gas and oil, but rather that we keep production to a minimum and have measures in place to mitigate the emissions.

That is why targets always talk about net emissions

JenniferEccles Sun 12-May-24 12:45:12

She certainly is annoying!
I have got no problem whatsoever with further licenses being granted for gas and oil exploration as it’s now been accepted that we will need both for many decades to come.

Anyway if she and the other protesters were genuine about their cause they would focus on countries which are the ‘worst’ offenders like China and India, and the US.
That won’t happen though. Far less effort to go for the easy targets.

maddyone Sun 12-May-24 12:01:52

I think Greta Thunberg is horrible. She has a permanent scowl on her face and only looks pleased when she’s being arrested. I do my best to ignore her.

JenniferEccles Sun 12-May-24 11:54:32

I have long suspected that the same protesters turn up at every demonstration regardless of the cause, whether it is the Black Lives Matter brigade, Just Stop Oil, or the latest Palestinian mob.

I think I may be right as I read the other day that the annoying little Greta Thunberg joined those protesting about the Israeli girl’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest.

She’s 21 now. Does she work? I guess not as she presumably has to catch up on the education missed while she was travelling the world telling everyone where they were going wrong.

She is good value though. I absolutely loved the expression on her angry little face when she caught sight of Donald Trump once at some event or other!

Oh, not the suffragettes again. Much of their vandalism provoked hostility and earned then considerable opprobrium; it was ultimately the suffragists' tactics, ceasing hostilities and working steadfastly throughout the war , that earned them the vote.

Oh, what a joy, someone realising that the Suffragettes were not the people who won us the vote. In fact they were opposed to universal franchise, and only wanted votes for women on the same terms as men then got the vote, ie votes for middle class women with college education, or owners of a property above a certain rateable value.

The movement was not democratic, it was run by the Pankhursts and a few close associates, who ejcted anyone who ever questioned their decisions. It was funded by wealthy people, who have no involvement in the movement but who wee friends of its leaders. It was a bit like all the shadowy organisations funding the Conservatives through shadowy organisations based n Tufton Street.

In the 1920s and 30s they allied themselves with the Fascist party, in the UK and looked kindly on fascist governments in Europe.

I was delighted to discover recently, that this was the history taught to my DGD in school.

How ironic would it have been had they then vandalised that priceless historical document? The actual charter which was pivotal in gaining freedom & autonomy for the common man!

It wasn't pivotable for the common man at all. It was freedom from the tyranny of the crown for the aristocracy. They didn't give a monkeys for ''the common man'.

There won't be any 'freedom' for the protesters, either. They'll be prosecuted and get prison sentences.

You don't honestly believe that do you?
Most of the young who have damaged property haven't served prison sentences, the chance of two 80something women being sent to prison are less than my chance of winning the lottery.

Daft old things, they probably think they’re very daring and enjoyed causing a stir.Bet all they get is a slap on the wrist and a fine and that’s all good as I just bet they would love a spell in clink.I’d have left them glued there for a day.

They still contributed. I know all about the suffragists, too.

^If you are going to use vandalism to, potential destroy priceless historic assets, then I think it is reasonable to ask to what extent you are living the life you profess to want us all to live.^

If they don't use Gnet how do you propose to elicit this information?

This would be something for the News media to do.
