Rishi Sunak plans to make military service mandatory for 18 year olds if he wins the next election. Those not wishing to join up will do community work one weekend a month. I can't see this being a vote catcher.

I think this idea has been put forward in order to make absolutely sure the Tories do not win this election. IMO they want out of the mess. I do not know the details of this scheme, but I'm betting most young people won't want it so maybe they'll get out and vote!

You might be on to something there undines 😁

I think this is an appalling fantastic idea. Let's start with all those wannabe MPs who go from school to uni to research assistant to working with focus groups ( or whatever), without a single idea of what happens in the real world! A year working in A&E or primary 7 in an inner city school should sort them out!

I'm actually sick to death of all this youth bashing. Both my children did voluntary work, my 14year old gdd has been volunteering since she was 12 with a national animal charity, she also volunteers at athletics clubs in our local community. She, along with a large group of her friends are doing the DofE award through the school. My 11 year old gdd is in the Scouts and has signed up to start volunteering in the animal charity when she reaches her next birthday.

I would actually be in favour of a non-compulsory option for young people to do a year's paid community service, properly funded with training and support
Everyone should have the opportunity to understand that many in our community live with very real problems.
And what about the dire shortage of carers? This could help.
But I suppose it would be too expensive.

Won’t be illegal migrants doing boot camp, hardly going to fight for this country are they!

If they want to come here to live they will have to accept the laws of the land, surely. Perhaps Rishi thinks this may be a deterrent to asylum seekers. grin

I don't understand what all the fuss is about this. Those still in education, in Uni or College, or working (including apprentices) wont be included. Only those sitting on their bums doing nothing and sponging off the state and/or their parents.

Rishi has obviously got the message across loud and clear, so everyone has a firm grasp of what they are objecting to grin.

I believe it's a good idea in principle. However I think it should be for anyone up to 25 who is not in full time employment. Anyone who is working or full time study should be exempt. I'm not sure about military as the army has enough to do without trying to engage young people who possibly don't want to be there but community work would be good, there's so much they could be doing.

It is everyone of thst age.

Those in education or training will be able to defer it.
Those who refuse won't be sent to prison but will be sanctioned.

Do you mean fined? Many of them don't claim benefits, so can't be sanctioned.

That's what the report said

Community service?
😁

Err...no. The idea seems to be that young people will have to organise paid work round the "national service" commitment.

maddyone Wed 29-May-24 11:53:55

We don’t need to worry about this idea of national service because it’s not going to happen.
The Conservatives will lose the election and Labour will win. The only question is by how many seats?

News alert:
Boris Johnson resigned as an MP about a year ago.
He’s gone.
Just in case anyone missed this bit of news.

NotSpaghetti Wed 29-May-24 11:50:53

Maggs - copied from above:

Will 18-year-olds at university be exempt or allowed to defer?
No. Everyone will have to do National Service and fit it around their lives. There will be very limited deferments and none for university students.

So I think you are wrong.

The OP gives the impression it's everyone age 18-24

I suppose the threat of this might encourage any NEETS to find work quite rapidly!

Maremia Wed 29-May-24 11:46:05

Yes, I get the impression that they want to lose. Let someone else clean up their mess while they swan off, with their generous parliamentary pensions,to lucrative posts.

red1 Wed 29-May-24 11:40:44

great idea, get the rabble off the streets teach them to obey those who know whats best for them, food stamps next, take away welfare and the nhs, the good old days.......

They have gone too far with this one, maybe they dont want to get re elected as they would have to clean the mess up. 2010 to 2016 austerity, bedroom tax, blame the poor, 2017 found guilty of gross mistreatment of disabled by european court human rights, brexit, boris fiasco ,covid deaths etc etc

how long will it take for the public to forget these events?

Grantanow Wed 29-May-24 11:07:48

I'm an elderly voter and I think the national service proposal is a cheap Tory gimmick to solicit my vote like promises about the old age pension. I've no intention of falling for it from a party comprised of the likes of Johnson and Truss.

The organisation, planning and supervision is complex and time consuming. I can’t imagine there being enough cash or people to get such a scheme up and running

It's a non-starter.

Is it another 36 days of all this .......

Doodledog Wed 29-May-24 10:33:00

Disabled teenagers? Teenagers who are young carers? Teenagers who work and need that money?
Young carers and those in work are covered in my post above with the Telegraph's Q&As. I assume that the disabled will be expected to take part if they are capable of doing so, too.

I agree that it is unfair to target this age group though.

maddyone Wed 29-May-24 08:14:46

Give us peace and go

They’ve called an election. They can’t go any quicker.

I'm 66, nearly, and think that this is an awful plan which is ill thought out. The Tory Party really don't like young people, do they? They took the country out of Erasmus, threw away Freedom of movement and studying abroad. In addition, they have people like Cameron talking about giving back because of the lockdown. They were children during that, who had their education disrupted and who, in the main, followed rules for the welfare of their grandparents and others. You can't say the same for Johnson and his ilk who partied in Westminster.
Give us peace and just go.
