Trump has been found guilty on all 34 charges by a united jury!

foxie48 Fri 31-May-24 15:20:31

Trump is a misogynistic bullying narcissist with a questionable intellect but a good nose for telling people what they want to hear even if it's complete lies. I'm genuinely surprised that anyone should think he made a good POTUS last time round and even then, I'm amazed that his attempt to overthrow a legitimate election result hasn't made them change their mind!
Interesting article based on research done in 2017 on who supports Trump. Staunch Conservatives 31%, American Preservationists 20%, Anti Elites 19%, Free Marketeers 25% and the Disengaged, interestingly four things brought them together, attitudes to Hilary Clinton, evaluations of the economy, views about illegal immigration and views about Muslim immigration. I guess anyone in the UK would be most influenced by the last two thing which are about immigration. I'd be interested in knowing what is holding up support now in the US.

Putin must be loving this. A divided US plus withdrawal from NATO would suit him perfectly.

Wyllow3 Fri 31-May-24 14:49:47

Trump must be spending millions trying to interfere with the other cases.

Bit of a long read, but very informative just how politics can undermine a judiciary. Scandalous

He seems to think that if he repeats enough times that the judge is biased etc etc he can con people into thinking he isnt guilty!! How anyone could want to vote for such a liar, cheat and selfish person is amazing. Doesnt say much for their judgement and the thought of him being chosen is very depressing!

MayBee70 Fri 31-May-24 14:43:47

You only have to watch the documentary about how he treated people in Scotland when he built a golf course there to see what sort of person he is.

Syracute Fri 31-May-24 14:34:35

The man is a convicted felon. He is not suitable for office or much else . He is also a failed businessman. He is a proven liar and cheat . He has more serious charges ahead that have yet to be brought to court . Subverting an election and the Jan 6 insurrection . It’s really dreadful to listen to any argument that this man is fit for office .

nanna8 Fri 31-May-24 14:30:05

Just hope it doesn’t lead to their 2 nd Civil War.

Wyllow3 Fri 31-May-24 14:27:08

" No, my concern and support regards his suitability to be a powerful and successful politician."

so how does this sit with his attempt to rig the votes in Georgia - in his own recorded words

Trump says on the call. " All I want to do is this: I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. ... Fellas, I need 11,000 votes, give me a break "

who can say he is a suitable POTUS after that?

Finally!

Poor woman, that Stormy Daniels.

It was a minor accounting mis-statement. That's it. A fine and a slap on the wrist.

And please do not refer to the payment as "hush money" - how can it be when the recipient has been blabbing her mouth off for the last decade?

But you’re still ok with him paying a porn star for sex when his wife had just given birth?

The man’s morals are not my concern. I think French politicians have a similar take. If his wife has a problem I’m sure she’d deal with it. No, my concern and support regards his suitability to be a powerful and successful politician.

If people had the stamina to read the thread I linked to the lawyer predicted that Trumps lawyers would try to focus on the 'hush money' element to deflect people from thinking about the serious, and principal, rationale of the trial, a criminal attempt to influence the election.

Yes.

It cant be proved of course.

Thats why I think the Georgia allegations of a criminal attempt to influence the election so important.

... would that not be difficult to prove - the purpose?

Yes. - hence the long challenges about the timeframe of the hush money (close to election) which was disproving the arguments put forward by Trump.

JenniferEccles Fri 31-May-24 13:33:56

NotSpaghetti The piece I read stated that the jurors were not told specifically which law was broken, and the basis of the appeal centres around the fact that it was an uncharged federal crime, and the question of whether the District Attorney had the power to do so as it had never been done before.

NotSpaghetti Fri 31-May-24 13:27:26

The point is it was a criminal "hush-money" scheme in order to influence the election

That is the point. Not the point or the payments. The purpuse

*Guilty on 34 counts sounds worse than it is. It only refers to the number of instalments by which Trump arranged for his then lawyer and sleazy fixer, Michael Cohen, to be reimbursed for paying Daniels.*

Andrew Neil

And apparently the appeal could take months, even years, leaving Trump free to campaign

According to a former criminal defence lawyer, who posted a long thread on twitter/X

Now, this Trump case—34 felonies for Falsifying Business Records, with what otherwise would’ve been 34 misdemeanors *elevated to felonies on the statutory basis that they were committed in service of a federal election fraud conspiracy*—isn’t actually that factually complicated.

Whole long thread here, it's not actually on twitter, so anyone can access it.

It was a foregone conclusion. This wouldn't have happened if he didn't still have massive support and a strong chance of being elected again.
He is an unpleasant person but he is what America needs.

Some parts of America may want someone like Trump, but he is the last thing that America needs That is not a party statement but a general one. Apart from his own crimes, a President as stupid as Trump will not be on top of all his ministers and lieutenants, so it would be every man into the trough for his own gains, and the devil take the rest of the country.

Mazie yes, my comment was in response to JenniferEccles earlier.
Sorry if it was confusing.

There is no requirement for the jury to state which one was broken (and were advised not to I read). The jury were told no need to say which as a matter of Law

I thought he was found guilty on all 34 points?

The jury seemed to be pretty positive...

From the Telegraph:

“Love or hate Trump, this rotten trial is an assault on justice
Trump’s conviction on all counts will tear America’s already fragile political fabric apart from the seams.”

What utter rubbish ! Trump was found guilty on all counts by a 12 member jury of his peers . These jurists were carefully vetted by lawyers of both sides ! This comment is an assault on our justice systems ability to conduct a fair trial . A fair trial is what happened . Trump is guilty on all counts !

He was charged with false accounting - attempting to conceal what he had done by falsifying accounts.

Yes, I thought it was that. Misusing campaign funds and then trying to hide it.

He’s appealed which may delay sentencing.

“As we mentioned earlier, Trump's lawyers say they'll appeal all the guilty verdicts against the one-time president.

"Every aspect of this case is ripe for appeal," his lawyer Will Scharf said late last night on Fox News.

Because of these probable imminent appeals, it's been suggested that Trump's sentencing - which is scheduled for 11 July - could be delayed. Some legal experts have said it could take place after the 5 November presidential election.

"There's a very good chance that the case is going to be overturned on appeal but the question is: will that happen before the election? The likelihood of the appeal being heard before the election is not very good," lawyer Annemarie McEvoy told the BBC last night.

"So he will probably be a convicted felon when he runs for office in November."
