Sunak skips off early from the D Day commemorations

I find this pretty indefensible.

Sunak along with the King and Queen, Starmer and Macron attended the morning commemorations in Ver-sur-Mer. But then skipped off to continue electioneering and so did not attend the commemorations at Omaha beach alongside Starmer, Biden and Macron.

“Tim Montgomerie, the founder of the grassroots Conservative Home website, told BBC Newsnight: “I want to put my head in my hands. If he came back for a political interview from the D-day commemorations that is indefensible.

“This is going to be the last big commemoration where survivors will be present,” he added. “I think it’s political malpractice of the highest order if Mr Sunak absented himself for an election interview on ITV.”

Starmer was later seen talking to Zelenskiy.

I imagine he has confirmed Biden's view of the UK now, as well as offending Canada and France.. and probably Australia if they had representatives.. without all those brave men from other countries we wouldn't have won the war and I think his behaviour was disgraceful and dismissive..

Sunak’s behaviour is insulting to the D-Day veterans, and to the other world leaders in attendance. Just what was he thinking?

Imagine if KS had done this?

According to ITV, the PMs office offered that afternoon as an interview slot, not the other way round, so he’d always planned to leave in the afternoon.

Even worse!

AGAA4 Fri 07-Jun-24 14:38:11

I am no longer shocked or surprised by what the Tories do and Sunak as their leader is an utter disgrace.
By leaving he was showing contempt for all those who attended and worse for all those who had died.

Unconfirmed

There are reports that Sunak originally had no intention of going to Normandy at all. But decided that he couldn’t get away with it so thought half a day would be something he could get away with.

No 10 are refusing to answer the question.

We don’t know why Macron was 20 minutes late, I doubt he was having a lie in, but he stayed for the rest of the day, and anyway, whatever Macron did or didn’t do doesn’t excuse Sunak’s disrespect.

Quite right. And Macron spent some time awarding French top medals of honour to veterans.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 07-Jun-24 15:41:35

This says it all

Allsorts Fri 07-Jun-24 15:49:59

What vacuous comments from extremists again, is that how you judge a prospective Prime Minister?
Lizzie, my father was one of those veterans and I am not insulted. No one has more respect for the armed forces than I, my father was a long serving airforce man, would not talk about the war, we were opposite politically but respected each others points of view, that is what he fought for.

I wonder if -the unelected- Cameron said to the PM, "You nip off early, Rishi mate and I'll step in for you." While thinking " I'll be in a nice, profile boosting photo with important people." The return of Dave has begun.

I think you’re right. People like Cameron know how to play amateurs, such as Sunak, like an old fiddle.🙄

Sunak’s behaviour has not gone down well with the core Tory voters, which is older people.

Casdon Fri 07-Jun-24 16:18:01

Are you saying that you think it was acceptable for the UK PM to leave the D-Day celebrations to go back to do a TV interview about politics Allsorts, it sounds very much like you do?

DiamondLily Fri 07-Jun-24 16:32:18

If it had been some sort of emergency situation, then everyone would have understood.

But, to pre-record a TV interview? No chance.

It shows his complete lack of respect and understanding. ☹️

I heard this too. Like Whitewave I don’t know if it’s true, but it makes you wonder.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 07-Jun-24 17:34:37

They will keep a very tight lid on that information. If it wasn’t true they would be shouting it from the roof tops.

DiamondLily Fri 07-Jun-24 17:37:11

It doesn’t appear to have gone down well:

“Two thirds of Britons think it was unacceptable for Sunak to leave D-day celebrations early, poll suggests
Two thirds of Britons think it was unacceptable for Rishi Sunak to leave the international D-day celebrations early to do an election interview, according to snap polling by YouGov. Some 43% said this was completely unacceptable, and 22% said this was somewhat unacceptable. Only 21% of people said what Sunak did was acceptable.”

A former government adviser on extremism has resigned from the Conservative Party over Rishi Sunak's decision to miss part of yesterday's D-Day commemorations in Normandy.

Ian Acheson tells the BBC he has "flipped" after what he described as a "colossal act of disrespect" by the prime minister.

DiamondLily Fri 07-Jun-24 17:39:18

Even Farage has piled in now:

MissAdventure Fri 07-Jun-24 17:40:39

Good.
So many people piling in may give a clue that people think it was disrespectful

ronib Fri 07-Jun-24 17:51:36

Piling in is normal for politicians.

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 07-Jun-24 17:52:56

Who are these ‘older’ people who vote Tory? I’m not one and I don’t know any. Sunak’s advisers seem to be appalling - the getting soaked in the rain debacle; lying about the £2000 tax thing and now this!

MaizieD Fri 07-Jun-24 17:53:14

I beg your pardon, Allsorts. Are you saying that your father fought for respect for everyone's point of view?

Even Hitler and the fascists'.?

Not mine, but I love,
"Who knew D-Day would be his Waterloo?"

Siope Fri 07-Jun-24 17:57:48

Has anyone seen Sunak’s Sky News interview about n this? It’s 6 minutes but worth watching through.

It is genuinely as if there is a fault in his understanding. I found myself quite concerned for him.

This is from Sky, so has an advert to start.

Haven’t seen the Sky report, but just watching the BBC report now. The 6pm one.

DerbyshireLass Fri 07-Jun-24 18:09:29

I am spitting feathers....

My English father was part the liberating army, and witnessed the horrors of the death camps. My Belgian mother was a member of the Resistance, my Belgian grandparents hid refugees in their cellar....And this is how they were (dis) honoured by Sunak.

Sunaks stunt was despicable. He is an absolute disgrace, an affront to the office of PM, and an insult to all those millions who gave their lives, especially the thousands of US troops who died on Omaha beach.

He is not worthy to be a member of any government let alone PM. He should hang his head in shame. And yet, I just saw a clip from the BBC where he gave a mealy mouthed, self serving "apology" to save his skin.

He is a sorry excuse for a man and must surely go down in history as one of our worst Prime Ministers.

And lest anyone accuse me of being partisan......Starmer didn't exactly cover himself in glory when he removed his poppy at a Remembrance Day Memorial Service so as "not to offend Muslims".

Is it really too much to ask our governments and political leaders to have a modicum of patriotism in their blood.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 07-Jun-24 18:10:17

I can’t make up my mind whether he doesn’t care, doesn’t understand or simply catastrophically misjudged the mood of the U.K.
