I find this pretty indefensible.
Sunak along with the King and Queen, Starmer and Macron attended the morning commemorations in Ver-sur-Mer. But then skipped off to continue electioneering and so did not attend the commemorations at Omaha beach alongside Starmer, Biden and Macron.
“Tim Montgomerie, the founder of the grassroots Conservative Home website, told BBC Newsnight: “I want to put my head in my hands. If he came back for a political interview from the D-day commemorations that is indefensible.
“This is going to be the last big commemoration where survivors will be present,” he added. “I think it’s political malpractice of the highest order if Mr Sunak absented himself for an election interview on ITV.”
Starmer was later seen talking to Zelenskiy.

Yes it was the veterans Day, and for those who didn’t survive to be remembered, but the prescence of 25 + world leaders shows the significance of the occasion. So it definitely looks bad for Sunak not to attend the afternoon. Many of the veterans and their families will not forget this.
So much for his military national service recruitment plan for 18 year olds (rubbished by many Service Chiefs).
He really does not have a clue.
Oh dear MaizieD since when has been wanting to know more about a situation become right wing? The left wing on Gnet seem very anxious to jump in at the first opportunity regardless of the possible circumstances or even truth if anyone remembers the meaning of the word.
I’m not minimising Sunak’s disrespect at all. Who prioritises an interview over the veterans. Shabby at best.

He didn’t miss half of the celebrations and you don’t know his reasons.
Far worse was watching the
Political debate last night with Fiona and that Labour woman who wouldn't shut up, took over, but said nothing but talked non stop.
He missed the afternoon of a day long programme. How is that not 'half the celebrations'?
We do know his reasons.
I'm surprised that one of our right wingers is more concerned with minimising Sunak's actions than they are with the disrespect those actions showed to other world leaders, to the living and dead participants in D Day and their friends and relatives, and to the UK which he couldn't be bothered to fully represent.
One faux pas after another. The comment "it's not a good look" also shows disrespect for the veterans. It was their day -not Rishi Sunak's.
Well Cameron was there...
And yes, the afternoon ceremonies were important too, surely.
Lots of great photos of Cameron, Macron, Biden and Scholz.

Shocking. Who advises this fella? Are they actively campaigning for him to lose? Looks that way. Just confirms that intelligence and common sense are NOT the same thing.
(Perhaps just as well as I’m not very intelligent).
I have wondered if his advisers are Fifth Columnists working for Labour.
Or just completely clueless.
I think this marks the beginning of the end for Sunak’s election.
He will find it difficult to recover from this catastrophic week.

Mamie how do you know several slots were available and offered?
Paul Brand on ITV news last night "today was the slot they offered, we don't know why".
Kirsty Wark on Newsnight gave the same information, The only slot ITV was offered was yesterday afternoon. I presume she had spoken to Brand.

The date of the D Day commemorations has been known for a long time, the reason for his return is shallow and not an emergency. Is this what he really thinks of the military and remembering this historic event? Starmer, Zelenskyy, Macron, Biden, Prince William all attended the Omaha beach commemorations, but the PM thought this less important than a tv interview which could have been at another time. I am actually shocked by this the more I think about it.

On the other hand, Sunak has been accused of lying and ITV gave him a slot to defend himself. So why was that the only time slot available?
Agree it’s not a good look but Sunak was ill advised to leave early.
I understand that several slots were offered and that was the one chosen for the recorded interview with Paul Brand. It will not be shown for five days.
Very disrespectful and cutting the next ceremony to appear on a TV interview not a good look- he has apologised but too little too late.

I didn’t see this programme but how can any amount of rudeness compare with Sunak disrespecting war veterans?
Oh Sunak has apologised.
Too late my friend - the damage has been done and you have shown your true loyalties.

Would I prefer the poisoned chalice of being PM or live a life of luxury and privilege on my wife’s billions?
He has made his choice and is showing it.

I don't think Sunak is particularly bothered about his job any more. He knows he's on the way out and is just going through the motions.
It's still a mystery to me why he wanted to be PM in the first place. I suppose he thought it would look good on his CV, as well as being a job which falls naturally to public school educated Oxford graduates.
Skipping half the D Day commemorations in order to record an interview feels like disrespect for the whole of the UK.

By not attending he's not even doing that.
This is an embarrassment and indefensible.
Oh i don’t know *maizie+ Sunak’s family has done very well financially from this period of Sunak’s tenure as chancellor and PM.
What Sunak did I think is unforgivable.
His actions show that he is now an irrelevance and the baton has now moved on to Starmer.
Not a good look for the PM.
