Well, lets see what Boris finds this week to continue the Conservative Campaign from the pages of the DM.....

I cannot understand, when you obviously dislike the man so very much, you continue to read what he writes. He's not an MP, is entitled to his views, right or wrong.
The Social Workers Network of GN just seem to be falling over themselves to keep going on about Johnson, when perhaps they should look closer to home for nasty comments.

We need to so that ( and this happened to me today) when someone starts spouting out some of the lies that are being written about Keir Starmer we can point out to them what the truth actually is.

Its happening all the time MayBee - often a quick google can find evidence to the contrary - I found for example a conservative supporter saying that the Labour Party's policy on Ethics and Integrity was going to stop MP's having any jobs outside being an MP at all, when in fact the policy is to stop "grace and favour" directorships, de facto lobbying, and above all handouts to mates for contracts like in Covid.

Starmer at the time didn't say it was "great" nor "boasted" (Sun's choice of words, but after the introduction of Indeterminate Sentencing it was believed that Worboys would serve a long sentence and seen as a good result and Starmer said so.

Then came the abolition of Indeterminate Sentencing and the confusion and failings of the Parole Board -

I think this Guardian Article lays it all out more fully with "how the chaos happened".

Guardian does say, "The CPS even wrote to Worboys’ victims in 2009 to tell them that the black-cab rapist’s indeterminate sentence was in effect a life sentence. Victims were told: “An indeterminate sentence is a new sentence that has been introduced only a few years ago. To all intents and purposes, it is a sentence of life imprisonment.”

The Guardian article also alludes to serious failings to hand certain information about Worboys to the Parole Board before they made the decision.

So ultimately the CPS got it wrong, but hindsight is a great thing. Starmer had left in 2013 but political smearing tries to lay it all at his door.

Worboys was sentenced to life with a minimum of 8 years in 2009. Starmer, then DPP, said this was a long sentence - see link below. Unbelievable.

Warboys was subsequently prosecuted for further offences and given a second life term with a minimum of 6 years in 2019. The CPS had originally refused to bring the 2019 prosecution.

The sentences meted out are frightening, especially given the number of victims. As is the decision of the parole board. Not my idea of justice.

Alongside the indeterminate sentence there was a (woefully short, but Starmer as DPP thought it great) minimum term, after which he could be considered for parole. A travesty.

But why would we (the GN Socialist Workers Network ) not read what he says?

If, like me, you read a variety of new media, you are going to inevitably read what he's written and because political campaigning is in full swing now, so is the rhetoric.

How can we comment if we don't read?

Also, some of us from the GN Socialist Workers (and Retired?) Party are quite keen to dissect what Starmer and the LB is proposing and promising, and how he and it are behaving.

I want to hear what they are all saying. BJ may not be an MP, but he has a heck of a lot of influence. And that's important in the campaign arena.

We've had lengthy threads on individuals across the political board on particular "controversial" people including one mentioned in the O/P, since the announcement of the GE, this is just one of them.

I care not for anything Johnson says or does. He’s reverting to his pre politics journalistic days where he slated people of different ethnicities on several occasion. He’s an odious, arrogant twit and the thought that some of the electorate actually want him back as PM is frankly horrifying!

And I understand that he has been sacked from several jobs for being a liar.

He was given a minimum term of 8 years and the CPS would have been well aware that he was entitled to apply for parole at that point.

It left the Parole Board in a real mess - this article - really worth a read - addresses both the appalling decision by the board (and errors like not having full information) to release Worboys but also the and the dilemmas around he Parole board mess confronted with Indeterminate Sentences.

When Indeterminate Sentences were introduced the CPS clearly believed Worboys would be in prison for a very long time - hindsight is all very well.

Rejoining the EU is not a practical aim, it requires a unanimous vote by EU members, the way we behaved during Brexit caused a lot of resentment, so they would not have us. It would be a benefit to have close ties and we should work towards that. Particularly a Customs Union and reunifying the VAT process which has been particularly difficult.

That means accepting their rules and standards, they are not going to change anything for our benefit.

I think you have misunderstood Zoe's post - easily done because of the way it's worded... I had to read it a couple of times.

I think she is attempting to discredit Starmer on the basis that he ignored the so-called "People's Vote" movement by Remainers who wanted a confirmatory second Referendum. The fact that she hasn't forgotten that is not because she was one of the Remainers but rather wants to illustrate his unreliability.

We are then castigated for criticising BJ because he got us the vaccine first, and then got Brexit over the line. For which I assume we are meant to be eternally grateful

... and she wants him back in government - wants this arch Brexiter fighting those dastardly socialists, Starmer, and the "classless clown" Rayner. Though the dictionary definition of classless doesn't mean what she thinks it means.

I've just been looking at info on the Warboys case, and it is very convoluted.

Why was Worboys up for a parole hearing?

Worboys was given an indeterminate sentence when he jailed in 2009, under a scheme introduced for public protection in 2005.

Indeterminate sentences were abolished in 2012 when European judges ruled they breached human rights.

Isn’t it nice that European Judges put the human rights of a convicted criminal over and above those of U.K. women…
