Ian Gribbin Reform candidate for Bexhill and Battle

‘A Reform UK candidate claimed the country would be "far better" if it had "taken Hitler up on his offer of neutrality" instead of fighting the Nazis in World War Two.
Ian Gribbin, the party's candidate in Bexhill and Battle, also wrote online that women were the "sponging gender" and should be "deprived of health care".
In posts from 2022 on the Unherd magazine website, seen by the BBC, he said Winston Churchill was "abysmal" and praised Russian President Vladimir Putin.
A Reform spokesman said the comments were not "endorsements" but "written with an eye to inconvenient perspectives and truths", while his remarks about women were "tongue in cheek".
Mr Gribbin declined to comment.
In July 2022, Mr Gribbin posted on the Unherd website: "Britain would be in a far better state today had we taken Hitler up on his offer of neutrality…. but oh no Britain’s warped mindset values weird notions of international morality rather than looking after its own people."
The same month he wrote: "In Britain specifically we need to exorcise the cult of Churchill and recognize that in both policy and military strategy, he was abysmal."
The previous month he criticised women, writing on the site’s message board: "Do you think you could actually work and pay for it all too like good citizens?
"Men pay 80% of tax – women spend 80% of tax revenue. On aggregate as a group you only take from society.
"Less complaining please from the 'sponging gender'."
He added that women are "subsidised by men to merely breath (sic)".
In January 2022 he posted: "Men pay 80% of tax. Women take out 80% of expenditures.
"Square that inequality first by depriving women of healthcare until their life expectancies are the same as men, Fair’s fair."
In December 2021 he wrote female soldiers "almost made me wretch (sic)" and were a "total liability".

One thing I wish Farage would can is his not infrequent accusation that the Left "hate our country".

No, I don't think they do.

They are critical of the way it's being governed. Which is not the same thing at all.

It's a very deliberate and divisive ploy to set those on the Right against the Left.

And it's dangerous.

Greyisnotmycolour Tue 11-Jun-24 20:06:27

Isn't this what Reform voters want? What else do they think the party stands for? This particular candidate doesn't gloss his content but the message is the same from all of them.

The silence is deafening, isn’t it!

J52 Tue 11-Jun-24 16:09:50

No comments from those who support Reform and Farage?

Parsley3 Mon 10-Jun-24 19:35:47

I believe that Reform fans like candidates who say what people are really thinking and tell it like it is but surely they must draw the line at this fellow's straight talking.

He's apologised for the Hitler bit.

... well he would, wouldn't he.

No-one says things like that and then 'apologises' as if it's just an every-day faux-pas.

The BBC is aware of at least 16 former potential parliamentary candidates for Reform who are no longer standing because of inappropriate or offensive comments.

This compares to eight for the Green Party, five for Labour, three for the Conservatives, two for the Liberal Democrats and one for the Workers Party of Britain.

Yes, weed them out. Free speech comes with responsibility.

How can he have admired Putin - a man obsessed with his own sense of power? He thinks he's created the bonds that form a stable society? A man who will have dissidents murdered?

God preserve us from these hot-heads.

I’ve just come across from the other thread, thanks Wyllow.
Apologised for what he said about Hitler? I actually don’t know what to say. I’m disgusted that anyone could ever admire Hitler. Perhaps he needs a visit to one of many sites I’ve visited in Germany and Poland. Auschwitz would be a good start.

He's apologised for the Hitler bit.

Good grief- and I thought that Reform had already scraped the bottom of the barrel: clearly not.
On other threads, posters talk about Reform candidates saying what " lots of people think" or "telling it like it is" . I wonder how they see this man's worldview? Is he " saying what lots of people think"?

I 'debated' with one such years ago on a SM site.

He said that women were 'spongers' too. They only ever want to do the "nice" jobs and not get their hands dirty.

But when challenged, he admitted that women shouldn't drive busses, 'planes, fight in the army, because they weren't up to it and were just a liability with men having to pick up the pieces, etc, etc.

You can't win with men like that, and they are not worth listening to because, obviously, they have a personal problem with women.

I wonder how the Jewish voting community feel about his comments on Hitler?

Re-watching Pride & Prejudice recently (2005) I remember Elizabeth's aunt commenting about Mr Darcy when he spoke... "there's something pleasant about his mouth when he speaks"
... I looked at Gribbin's mouth - it's all tight and pinched. grin

He's a piece of work isn't he.

I used to lived in that ward, and some of us didn’t think like that.

Dinahmo Mon 10-Jun-24 16:14:59

re Churchill. Did anyone see the film "Darkest Hour" last night? In case you didn't, it's about the days leading up to Dunkirk.

Following Hitler's invasion of the Low Countries on May 10 1940 Chamberlain resigned and Churchill was appointed PM leading a coalition govt. He made his first speech (blood, toil, tears and sweat) to Parliament on May 13 when he outlined plans for British resistance.

There were several people in parliament who wanted to appease Hitler and use Mussolini as a negotiator, one of whom was Viscount Halifax and some of the army chiefs.

There were over 330,000 Allied soldiers trapped between Calais and Dunkirk and most of them were evacuated by sea.

I expect that most of you know about this so forgive me for telling you.

The film, although there are historical inaccuracies, portrays the difficulties Churchill had in coming to a decision. Gribbin's statement about Churchill and appeasement are appalling and we have to hope that the people in Bexhill and Battle will give him short shrift.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 10-Jun-24 15:22:03

We seemed blessed with idiots in this part of the world. Littlehampton and Bognor have the pleasure of considering Daniells from the Reform party who appears to have spent the last few years “liking” Tommy Robinson, racist memes, and fascist rhetoric.

Wyllow3 Mon 10-Jun-24 14:58:40

In the Daily Mail, which has reported it, Reform accuses the BBC of "forensic archeology". Fair enough if made 15 years ago, but t was 2022.

Sounds like yet another mysogynistic, ignorant, inadequate male.. I wonder what he thinks of Marie Le Pen..

nanna8 Mon 10-Jun-24 14:40:43

They need to get rid of this one asap. I imagine, if they have any sense at all, they will. Mr. Gibbon sounds like a raving lunatic.

Wyllow3 Mon 10-Jun-24 14:33:47

thats OK, posted a nearly the same time.

In addition

In addition, Farage and Putin

"Nigel Farage has suggested that the West should be more open to negotiating with Vladimir Putin."

the telegraph has a fuller article but has a paywall.

Time for Reform to "pull" this candidate.

Cossy Mon 10-Jun-24 14:33:01

Cossy

Mmmm food for thought. I think the issue is that with divisive leaders come extremists and hopefully the electorate in his constituency will send him a sharp message by not voting for him.

I’ll make no further comment for fear of being accused of being a “pompous leftie” grin

MayBee70 Mon 10-Jun-24 14:32:28

Yes. Crossed posts! My partner had just read the article out to me and I was horrified ( albeit not surprised). I assume it’s not the same candidate that was fined £2,000 for kicking a dog!
