That's Mr Sunak's definition of hardship? Yes, he is truly detached from the rest of us.

petra

Sky was here in the uk when sunak was about 10.
Just when you think he cant put his foot in his mouth any further, he finds more room 🤦🏼‍♀️

My absolute favourite post! grin

He has form for this do you remember "oh no actually no not working class" from way back?

Calipso Wed 12-Jun-24 18:59:29

I'll stick my head over the parapet and observe that the partial comment that the media have blown up out of context is not Rishi Sunak's definition of hardship. He simply offered it as an example. He cannot help his upbringing any more than I can help mine.
And I'll leave that right there....

flappergirl Wed 12-Jun-24 19:44:05

Wasn't he once called Dishy Rishi because of his looks? I think that nickname has just taken on a whole new meaning.

There was Sky TV when he was a boy. I think he was 10 when it started.

We had it early on so our children were part of the modern world. Our children are similar ages.

silverlining48 Wed 12-Jun-24 20:03:24

We have never had sky , still don’t, but oh dear poor deprived little Richi. Hearts bleed …….

Septimia Wed 12-Jun-24 20:12:45

Surely the reason he said they didn't have Sky was because the programme was being broadcast on that channel. He obviously thought it was a relevant comment. As we all realise, it didn't work!

I had to look. The fees for Winchester where Sunak went at 13 are over £49000 a year. Sky's most expensive deal is £38 a month just now so around £450 a year. Not having Sky must have helped so much.

kittylester Wed 12-Jun-24 21:22:31

I wish our Sky was only £38 pm

Our children went to a (minor) Public schools - the fees were nothing like £49k pa.

Joseann Wed 12-Jun-24 21:35:42

I think you'll find that private school fees have risen by over 500% since Rishi Sunak's time.

kittylester Wed 12-Jun-24 21:45:02

Quite Joseann.

SueDonim Wed 12-Jun-24 21:50:22

My boys are about the same age as Sunak. I don’t recall them ever asking to have Sky, it just wasn’t on our radar. We finally got it in 2010 when my youngest was a teenager. I think if we hadn’t had a late baby, we’d never have got Sky!

Can Rishi (or Keir) match the 4 Yorkshiremen though? gringrin

M0nica Wed 12-Jun-24 22:12:40

We still do not have Sky or anyother streaming service. Just Freeview, or whatever it is called.

NotSpaghetti Wed 12-Jun-24 22:15:35

He didn't say this, or even imply it may13 - as Sago said it was twisted by the media.
He was basically saying that children always want things they can't have.

I can't bear the man but if we want the politicians we can bear to be reported correctly then we should extend that to others.

Sky tv didn't exist when Sunak was a child! Apart from his hopeless attempt to empathise with his voter, pay to view tv is a want, not a need. There will be many many people I'm sure, who struggle with heating, feeding and housing their family. Probably sky tv is way down their list.

Yes it did exist when he was a child!

Delila Thu 13-Jun-24 18:00:47

He really does flounder when he’s forced to come off-script, doesn’t he? You could see him struggling with the whole concept of having to “go without”.

Pittcity Thu 13-Jun-24 18:05:14

Probably photoshopped but....

ronib Thu 13-Jun-24 18:05:19

I don’t believe that Sunak went to Winchester as a boarder but as a day boy. The fees are about half price? Even so for 3 boys to fund still a bit to find out of earned income.

Pittcity Thu 13-Jun-24 18:06:32

He also eats Twix and Haribo like common people!!

This.

Our children went to similar schools as Day Pupils - we could never afford 5 x half that.

Fees are hugely different now.

Like him or not it is unfair to make matters look worse than they really are.

They were about £20,000 when he went. He was a boarder and he tried at one point claiming he got a scholarship. He didn't.

Pittcity Never mind Twix and Haribo. look at his dire attempt to eat a pasty in Cornwall. Nobody holds both ends and takes a bite out of the middle! Had he even seen one before?

Nope, the fees were £12k in 1995 when Sunak attended. The Mirror is wrong.
Though the big explosion in fees came shortly after his time when his siblings were in private education.

Aveline Thu 13-Jun-24 20:40:29

I'm so cross about the way this snippet has been blown up out of all proportion by the media and people who just fall for anti Rishi click bait.
I'm not a fan and am not going to vote for his party. However, his parents sound like absolute role models for others these days. They came here. Worked as a doctor and a pharmacist and prioritised their children's education over the latest consumer must haves. We could do with more like them.

Joseann Thu 13-Jun-24 20:42:38

👏 👏 Aveline.
