Yesterday was the best weather for ages. 822 immigrants arrived on rubber dinghies yesterday. Who knows how many today and in the next few weeks if the good weather continues.

French Police seem to do nothing other than watch and take photos. 😢

Cossy you seem to be saying two different things here.Stop the boats but carry on taking anyone who comes here and being ā€˜kind’.
Yes of course for everyone in the world it’s an accident of birth but that’s hardly an argument for allowing a small country to take in thousands every single week. What are we storing up for ourselves in the near future? Look at some of the cultures and countries the illegal migrants are from!
I will be watching with interest at what Starmer proposes to do to stop it or at least slow it down.

Our City hotels are full of immigrants.
A university halls of residence in an outlying village was used as overflow despite local opposition.
30 young men absconded in week 1, then a 14 year old school girl was sexually assaulted.
The halls were closed and all the men were moved on.

That’s truly awful and not what anyone would want BUT if we were more effective with processing them and trying to stop the boats actually crossing, these terribly atrocities would never have happened.

Of course we don’t want to welcome rapists and violent criminals into our country, but these are the minority and need to be dealt with and sent back, somehow, to a safe country or imprisoned

The lack of compassion amongst our community of GNs is shocking and sometimes born of fear and ignorance.

This current govt must be laughing g all the way to the bank with their divisive tactics. They have caused this, yet all I hear is ā€œLabour will open the floodgatesā€

For goodness sake, when are you going to own up to the fact that this particular Tory govt have caused much misery and wasted many many millions of £££££ during their tenure.

It is an accident of birth!

How on earth do you explain it otherwise.

Try following the arduous journey of many refugees, say from Afghanistan, look and learn!

We still accept far less refugees than many other countries.

Yes, I totally agree that we need to control immigration of all types and we need to ā€œstop the boatsā€ we need to work in partnership with other countries, but as we cannot even agree amongst ourselves, fat chance of that happening.

The Tory record for this is abysmal, as is the Home Officer at efficient processing them and our Border Control are less than useless. The ££££££m spent on both France and Rwanda could have housed all our ā€œownā€ homeless!

As with so many other things, there but for the Grace of God ……..

Incidentally I’ve met and worked with refugees, including unaccompanied minors!

Primrose53 Thu 20-Jun-24 09:07:41

People can’t complain about taxes etc when we are taking in millions of people. It all has to be paid for!

We are feeding them, giving them accommodation, pocket money, healthcare, education and after a while will probably be taking in all their relatives!

Blair started this and if Labour gets in we all know the floodgates will be propped open for ever more.

Think about your own population, they deserve more consideration. There are some very, very poor and needy people who seek help through no fault of their own. Love them and give them help first.

They are ALL humans and for people born here it’s an accident of birth! ALL humans (unless murdered/terrorists et) are deserving of help. We are back to the ā€œdeservingā€ and ā€œundeservingā€

An accident of birth, ye gods! Is that your excuse for us to take in what amounts to a tsunami of illegal immigrants?! Wake up to reality.

Cossy Thu 20-Jun-24 09:00:15

I am in agreement and they need to stop these boats but at the end of the day you cannot blame the immigrants, blame the government for handing out benefits, free housing, food etc. The streets of London are not paved with gold but as long as these people are being handed out everything on a plate they will never stop coming. I bet if the government says, no more benefits, no more housing there would be no more boats.

Refugees/Asylum Seekers don’t get ā€œbenefitsā€. They have No Recourse to Public Funds and No Right to Work (for the umpteenth time!) The survive on a small allowance paid out of the foreign aid budget! Horrible ā€œclick bait postingā€ well done Primrose! Job done eh!

Im shocked at the cruel comments on this thread. Please think about these poor people and open your hearts and make them welcome here. They are human beings, after all, just like you and I. Save your venom for the traffickers.

There’s no ā€˜venom’ just the practical reality that this number of people landing here every day, day in day out and year on year cannot go on.
They pay the smugglers to get them the boat so yes, both the smugglers and the people need to be stopped, it’s a symbiotic relationship between the two.

How can this be acceptable to post this?
Really?

I don't have the energy for a grilling but please the people in these boats are human beings. They are somebody's son, somebody's neice or nephew,, somebody's friend they went to school with.

Oh please! What kind of a rationality is that?
So are anyone, including all prison inmates.

It is not a mutually exclusive situation. I volunteer for a local charity that supports anyone in need in our county. We get referrals from both immigrants and members of the local community and all are treated equally as they should be.

It’s not the souls on these rubber dinghies we need to be concerned about - it’s the criminal rings running it all that need addressing. They don’t care about desperation, they care about making big bucks - they are the ones that need tackling, and that’s no easy task. They’ll be involved with all undesirable activities - people trafficking, slavery, drugs, illegal transportation of immigrants and in and on …

Maybe when the indigenous British start moving out in droves they might consider looking after them first. Oh - no one will take them, the rules are too strict. Funny that.

PamelaJ1 Thu 20-Jun-24 07:07:23

Coronation totally agree with you. I can’t think why these business are allowed to continue trading.
I also don’t understand why they are so well patronised. Don’t customers know what their cash funds?

Coronation Thu 20-Jun-24 06:53:18

Some are used to work illegally. Look at a lot of car cleaning, nail bars, takeaways etc with huge amounts of staff and only take cash. Why don't we do more to target these companies?

Also go into a city centre and there are new shops, always empty, candy shops, clothes shops with everything for £5 etc and there's no way they can pay rent in huge stores so I suspect these are fronts for money laundering.

Curtaintwitcher Thu 20-Jun-24 06:37:46

The present situation cannot be allowed to continue. We are being over whelmed. Other European countries are getting stricter on immigration and so they are coming here instead. It is totally irresponsible and a betrayal of the British people.
Most of these people are Muslim and many are coming from Turkey. Surely it would make sense for them to stay there?

Vintagewhine Thu 20-Jun-24 06:36:58

I wonder how many of us can trace our roots back to some form of migration? Probably a very high proportion. Migration is a fact of human existence, always was and always will be.

Can I recommend a BBCiplayer documentary called FLEE which is about a young man escaping from Afghanistan. It might explain to some people how some of these people end up in those boats.

I will watch it. I also like a film called "God Grew Tired of Us".

biglouis Thu 20-Jun-24 03:43:52

I agree 100% with GSM.

My feelings towards these incomers are well known.

Been watching on Sky how the Greeks and the Mexican immigration people deal with them. We could learn some lessons there. We are too soft.
