Everyone knows that many migrants are doing wonderful jobs in our country and are totally supportive of migrants coming here legally to work zakouma.
People are concerned about the ones who are coming here illegally on small boats, and immediately asking for asylum, and therefore becoming legal. They are concerned about the cost to the economy, millions of pounds a day, of people who are a burden on our overburdened state.
People are also concerned about the level of legal immigration because in anyone’s book, three quarters of a million people in one year is too many. Many of these are not productive and essential, students and dependents are not essential and add nothing to the economy, and use the services that are already overburdened.

At present anyone applying for a skilled worker’s visa has to have a job paying at least £38,700 pa. By no means a fortune.

God help you if you might rock up at A and E and be cared for by a migrant.

My Father in his last days was cared for by a Syrian consultant, a more decent human being it would be hard to find.

It’s not actually true though. The person appointed to a job in the UK brings their family, who all use the UK’s services. So for every migrant with a skill the UK needs, there are probably two others using the resources here too. Most jobs don’t have housing attached, so that is a drain on housing stock, as well as schools, hospitals, GPs etc. depending on the wage of the migrant, they and their family may also claim benefits.

We need immigration to fill certain jobs, but it has to be the legal kind only.

No but they still will use NHS, schools if they have children, and will need a house in which to live. I think that’s the salient point. They may have come here with the skills we require but what if they become unwell, have an accident or lose their jobs?

I think the question is WHY hasn’t legit immigration been more controlled?

If there's "no room at the inn", why are so many visas issued for perfectly legal immigrants? They use the same resources as those who arrive by boat. There are far more immigrants with visas than others. The UK could stop legal immigration, if it wanted. Why hasn't it?

As far as I understand legal immigrants who come here either for education or to work have to be able to support themselves with proof of bank balance and/or have a sponsor to be a guarantor.

It is not easy for a U.K. citizen to bring a foreign spouse into the country (even from the EU) there are numerous hurdles and hoops to negotiate and it can take many months, sometimes over a year.

Unfortunately the people rocking up illegally have paid people traffickers, and are making these people extremely wealthy.

If they are two intent to live in the U.K. why not apply for refugee status in an European Country, get their passport, papers and remain to stay and then apply to come to the U.K. to work or study, much better use of their €’s than funding criminal people traffickers?

I am fully aware growstuff that other countries didn’t want the Jewish people trying to escape Germany, Austria, and indeed ultimately, other European countries. Some countries had quotas, and under the desperate circumstances, these were quickly filled.
But you know that as well as I do.
Therefore we must support the state of Israel so the Jews have a homeland of their own so it can never happen again.
Additionally no one is murdering migrants in their millions like the Jews were murdered. They are accommodated, given pocket money, medical care and dental care if needed, all free. So yes, the complete opposite of Germany in the 30s.
And the opposite of what France does too.

It’s nothing like Germany in the 30s, nothing at all. Jewish people were desperately trying to get out of Germany in the 30s, whereas here we have 3/4 of a million arriving legally and hundreds a day arriving illegally and then claiming asylum when their first foot is on British soil.

No, it's not the opposite of the 1930s. Jews (and others) were trying to leave Germany, which would be today's equivalent of Afghanistan or Iran. Other countries, including the UK, didn't want them. It wasn't just Germany where anti-semitism was rife.

No one has actually stated anyone “wants” am infix of migrants, however they enter. I’m not sure how many times some of us have to repeat and repeat the same thing over and over again!

We all know France isn’t a worn torn country.

We all know despite ££££££m given to France not a lot is going on to stop them.

We know France offered us a base to help start the asylum claim process, we declined.

We know the Rwanda scheme has cost £££££m and so only three people have gone, one was paid £3,000 to voluntarily go, the two came back as they were MPs.

We do want to stop dangerous crossing, we do want processing to be more effective and efficient, we do agree that migration is an issue and should be addressed.

Nothing much can be done with anything now until July 5th, and only time will tell how this all pans out.

I agree with JenniferEccles. Whether it cheers you up or not, zakouma, what she says is absolutely correct. The lawyers who concoct stories and advise sham baptisms are a disgrace to my profession.

There were 685,000 net migrants to the UK in 2023. There were 52,530 recorded entries through illegal or irregular routes for the 12 months ended June 2023 (nearest comparable figures I could find).
In 2009, the last full year of Labour government, there were 169,000 migrants. Labour policy from 15 years ago is not the problem.

Yes, who can forget the Brexit mantra "Take Back Control? What Brexit did achieve was that many skilled EU citizens who were actively contributing to the UK economy decided to go back home. But oh - they left a gap in the market. Who could have guessed...
