I have never and would never assert that all people seeking asylum are worthy. That would be foolish and naive. I don't have a bigoted perspective.

I don't think because the Manchester bomber had links with Libya it follows that we are being flooded by people from Libya who wish us harm.

The number of people coming from Vietnam was discussed on a thread (it might have been this one or another) only a couple of days ago. It has been publicised recently that many people are now coming from Vietnam. You really only need to keep your ears open and it’s surprising what you hear, when not looking at a situation from a fairly bigoted perspective. As for Morocco, apart from the fact that the Manchester bomber came from Morocco (his parents came here only to return to Morocco later) there have been others coming across on small boats from Morocco. A map was shown on Gransnet, and it was possibly on this thread, showing the huge number of countries asylum seekers are arriving from. I don’t have intensive knowledge and neither do you. You just need to look at information and events and draw conclusions from them rather than decide without evidence that all asylum seekers are worthy.

I can't for the life of me see how you have an in depth knowledge of " people coming from Vietnam" or " people coming from Morocco".

Immigration is a highly complex area which has been handled very badly by successive governments.

I can't see that crowing about the illegals or the small boat people is helping anybody.

When I clicked on this post, I thought it was about good weather, not an opportunity to reduce human being to numbers or use offensive terminology.

I’m not glad that people are coming from all over the world, unless they have something to offer this country. For example, people coming from Vietnam, people coming from Morocco. These countries, and others that people are coming from are not at war, they are safe countries, so safe that people go on holiday to them. These are economic migrants. We take many economic migrants because we need them to work here and they want to work here, but we shouldn’t be offering sanctuary to people who really don’t need sanctuary.

Freya5 I'm just thinking about my ancestors who worked as agricultural labourers, farmers, factory workers, machine makers, carpenters, dock workers and railway workers. These people were all deceased by 1945 but my mother became a nurse at the start of the NHS.

An empire needed propping up. The indigenous Britons were not prepared to work in the difficult industries of textiles, chemicals, heavy engineering neither were they prepared to work in the NHS and to top it all there was a shortage of Doctors.
Even the nasty Enoch agreed we should have immigration to prop up the country. A political decision; when immigrants came he launched a nazi like vitriolic campaign towards other lesser peoples. Fast forward to Brexit, and Modi has twisted his mate Sunak’s arm to take in a lot more Indians. The brutal Brexit deals.
A similar political decision to the 1950’s.
Guess Infosys didn’t have anything to do with that. Both Modi and Sunak are reprehensible politicians. Starmer is no better. Now ironically the Tory non whites are vying to be equally nasty. They are of course not supported by anyone in ethnic circles. The difference is the brown Tory uncle Tom’s unlike Enoch don’t believe in what they are saying. They are just copying characters in “Goodness gracious me” to appeal to the white right….but that has backfired. The white right instead is looking to Farage. Personally for me immigrants per se are not a problem. It would not phase me if we had hundreds of thousands more. Politicians are vile.

Excuse me, the same old tropes, "the British won't work". Typical from those who think they built Britain. Well Britain was well built, who manned and built the country during and between the wars and the periods before.
Who inverted most of the heavy engineering, who worked in the miles before the wars, yes Britons.
More than 1 million British men and women, 70,000 civilians, were killed during both wars. So those people weren't lazy, they were dead. That is why people from abroad came to the UK, to help rebuild,not build it. Also there were no jobs for people in such as Jamaica. You do know there are shortages of Dr's in many countries, not just the UK.

Yesterday was the best weather for ages. 822 immigrants arrived on rubber dinghies yesterday. Who knows how many today and in the next few weeks if the good weather continues.

I don't wish to join the discussion, but just to say that French police will actually be doing far less over the coming months because a very large number of them have been deployed to Paris for The Olympic Games. The fear is now, according to French people, that this drain of surveillance will leave other cities more vulnerable to terrorist attacks, and that immigrants will be increasing in numbers, which inevitably means more boat crossings.

Shame on anyone trying to use the dreadful abuse of children to bolster their racist reasons for objecting to taking our fair share of people with genuine claims for asylum. I have absolutely no pity or excuse for the vile men who abused children but they were not asylum seekers and they sought out children who were vulnerable. They deserved and got big sentences but they were nothing to do with asylum seekers.

Maybe this should be another thread maddy but one last comment. My experience was the reluctance to investigate properly and prosecute was influenced by local forces and other agencies focussing on their small area, rather than say GMP in total. Then the issue of whether the girls would support prosecution, or make ‘reliable witnesses’. Anyone working in this field will have seen 8 year olds destroyed in Court, never mind girls with such tragic life stories. I’m not defending this in any way. The two women health workers portrayed in Three Girls alongside police officer Maggie Oliver weren’t alone in shouting loud for a combined investigation and prosecutions

Other countries are using the same model so it can’t be as crap as the aide suggests.

James Sunderland, aid to home secretary has described the Rwanda plan as "crap". Cleverly described it as "batshit". So after spending £300 million, wasting goodness knows how much time and effort that's the best the tories have to offer and people are worried about how badly the LP will do! Really? If the Tories had just applied as much effort in processing asylum seekers and spent money in a properly focused instead of using immigration as a recruiting issue to try to hold on to voters, we'd be in a much better place ( and so would asylum seekers with perfectly legal claims) .

maddyone I’ve consulted our friend Google on grooming gangs. There is research but it’s very early and the conclusions uncertain. I worked with girls involved in child sexual exploitation, including gangs of predominantly Pakistani Muslim heritage. Dreadful experiences for vulnerable children. Nazir Afzal spent most of his career in the north west. He was chief prosecutor for the CPS until 2016. He was a key figure in the successful,prosecution of the Asian grooming gangs.
The key issue for me isn’t the ethnicity of the child sexual exploiters, it’s their gender. I’m not denying cultural issues but look at the abuse of women and children. Why do so many men behave in this way.

The key issue is indeed the gender of the abusers Iam, it is almost always males who abuse children and youngsters, although I believe some women are also abusers. Far fewer though.
Nonetheless it is a fact that Asian men have been guilty of grooming young girls in cities up and down the country for years now, and Nazis Afzal was instrumental in getting some of those men prosecuted, when no authorities were interested because they were afraid of upsetting race relations. I believe nine men were eventually convicted in that trial, but it is thought that there were forty or more men involved in the same group who were never prosecuted. One of the men fled to Pakistan and it took years to get him extradited back to the UK. Since the ringleaders are the ones normally prosecuted in these gangs, it is likely that many others are never brought to justice. This is a problem in these communities and we cannot hide the truth because it’s unpleasant.
I’ve never worked with Pakistani families, only Bangladeshi families. The only direct experience of abuse that I experienced whilst I was teaching was indeed with white males, but not working in gangs, but abusing young children, their own children in at least one case, and abusing at home, behind closed doors. It is sickening wherever it happens and whoever is the perpetrator.

Labour have been clear from the beginning of this ridiculous scheme that it was wrong, so them refusing to continue with it is no surprise at all. We all throw away rubbish.

It has failed. £370m for one voluntary deportee is failure by anybody’s reckoning, saying that some people who might have come to the UK but decided to go to Ireland when they heard about it is like saying we lost 370-0 but we got a good corner in the second half.

ex Police Detective Maggie Oliver who resigned over the grooming gang scandal now has the MO Foundation to support young girls who were abused and raped. She also tries to educate people about why these men do this, why it is more prevalent in Asian communities etc.

She has always said that quite ridiculously, figures were NEVER kept by the police of the ethnicity of these vile men so any figures are skewed.
