Blue badges.

Kind of similar. Parent and child bays a necessary for getting youngsters out and putting in a push chair. I have a problem when healthy teenagers get out and others struggle with narrow bays and toddlers

No way would I park in a disabled bay if I wasn’t disabled. I would rather walk a mile or even more to park as I know what it’s like to have someone who needs a badge.

I have a blue badge due to multiple physical problems and the biggest thing that annoys me is when people park in disabled bays without a badge, elderly people do it too they think because of their age their more entitled than a younger disabled person only people displaying a blue badge should be parked there.
I have confronted people on several occasions parking there without one I think it’s very selfish.

If you have applied to renew blue badge as far as I am aware you can still use your old blue badge. Check but it is like that in Gwynedd

I do feel that for certain illnesses such as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy that can only get worse the blue badge should be for life and not have to be renewed.

Have had BB for about 16 years. Only one time was there a delay in renewing and that was when I had to wait for local authority to appoint a new OT to assess people who did not have very current letters from doctors re their condition(s).

Find the current method of renewing (totally on line) extremely simple and straight forward. Received a reminder message informing me to allow upto 12 weeks, but it actually took less than four weeks for the replacement to arrive.

I no longer have a car or drive - but carry this with me in my bag so if I am given a lift anywhere, Planned or unplanned), this can be used. If I stay in the car whilst the driver pops in to get something, it most definitely is not displayed.

I am perplexed as to why the photo of the person for whom it is issued is on the back. Can only remember two or three occasions at which it has been requested for this to be seen. Surely, if the photo was displayed it would help to stop this badge being used when that person is NOT in the car.

Ref the 12 week wait. I didn’t reapply quick enough so there was a gap when I didn’t have BB to use. It was getting tedious so phoned up council and spoke to lovely man who I think might have pushed it through by a few days. Wanted because going away for few days - first time since 2019. Got it day before we went.Why did I apply late. ? Think it was because husband has Alziemers. I have been “ looked” at as I look well. But at times it is a struggle to get to front door.

My DD’s award is for life, but she has to reapply every 3 years with a new photograph and she has to get a newly dated copy of her entitlement to DLA.

All I am asked for now is a new photograph. No paperwork nor proof.

I was about to renew mine, when I got a reminder to renew it, with a message that it was about a twelve week wait.

Story in our local paper today about a couple in mid 80s. Lady is very disabled and has Blue Badge and husband drives her around but can’t walk far himself.

He did not realise or forgot you have to allow about 12 weeks to renew your badge so he has to wait until Sept now to renew. He says she will have to stay in the house now for the rest of the summer.

I have just been to Asda.where most of the disabled bays were full. Unfortunately, cars displaying a Blue Badge were few and far between.
Lazy, entitled and selfish people. 😔

Blue badges from my council only last 3 years ...then you have to apply again...my last PIP award was 4 years but could only get the blue badge for 3 years

As far as I know a BB isn’t given after knee/hip replacements, as the disabilities are temporary. Although rules change so could be wrong?

My late friend drove a fancy car and didn’t use a stick. She looked healthy as was on steroids and had a lovely wig. As I mentioned upthread she had cancer and could barely breath.

Sadly my husband’s Blue Badge arrived in the post the day he died. He needed one for a few years because of angina and back pain but on reading the criteria e thought he wouldn’t qualify, so didn’t apply till after a heart attack which left him very weak.

I’ve just Googled MissA and it’s the same here - I should have Googled earlier - apologies.
I think things have changed in recent years. at least since a friend couldn’t get a Badge for his late wife who had Alzheimers and DH’s friend who couldn’t get a badge for his partially sighted 90yr old Mum.

Only curious MissA but obviously your friend’s daughter can’t drive herself (visual impairment) but, as an athlete, does that affect her mobility? Presume she has other difficulties to warrant a Blue Badge?

I was under the impression that if you are registered blind or severely sight impaired, you automatically qualify for a Blue Badge? At least I think that is the case here in Scotland.

It makes me laugh/ scream when I see people climbing out of fancy, low sports cars with no help or crutches/sticks- I am on the list for a knee replacement, actually need both doing & really struggling to walk but I haven’t applied for blue badge, part of me is embarrassed, I don’t want to be judged

You do understand that some disabilities aren't visible, yes? My friend's daughter has a blue badge because of her visual impairment. She is a paralympic athlete and to look at her, the casual observer would never know there was anything to justify her having a blue badge. I also know a number of families whose children qualify for blue badges, but who don't necessarily look 'disabled' - which can cause arguments when parking.

They may have a blue badge because of their extreme shortness of breath, or some other health problem which doesn't affect their legs. Not all disabilities ar immediately visible.

Who do you think will judge you if you need one because of your knees, Mt61 ?

A propos of absolutely nothing - I’m not disabled, wouldn’t dream of applying for a blue badge but dodgy knees mean that I have to be able to open the drivers door fully.
Dream on. 4x4’s, SUV’s, bad parking, wider cars -yes I’m talking about YOU.
But back to the point, if you think you might benefit, do apply for one, take advice on the criteria (don’t be like DH who tended to play down his disabilities, whereas I could be more realistic)
Get medical back up, know the terminology and consider how you are on your worst days,
You have nothing to lose.
