How on earth did Northamptonshire top cop imagine he'd get away with such a staggering catalogue of fibs?

Oh Sarnia, thank you for your post. It made me ( an ex wife) smile this morning.

As an ex-wife (twice!) I am with you here. grin

Because like many people inpower in this country, and others, once they are up at the top, they think they can get away with anything, and no one will notice.

It would have taken a eagle eye to spot the Falklands medal that’s why it took so long to spot the fraud, wasn’t it his ex wife that alerted everyone.

One of the lies was that he served in a specific conflict. But anyone who knew his DoB would have been able to work out he was only 15 then! Does anyone else think that it was a strange lie?

I asked Google, which confirms MOnica is correct. He keeps his pension. I’m inclined to agree with MOnica that being sacked and exposed is adequate punishment.

I agree too, let him keep his pension. He has been sacked and embarrassed, punishment enough.
I see no need for further punishment he has worked and risen in the ranks, and his pension should not be taken into account.

Mr Adderley is also under investigation at his former force, Staffordshire Police, over allegations of fraud in relation to the maintenance of police vehicles.

M0nica Mon 24-Jun-24 18:03:41

why should any hand shave been greased for him to get away with his lies. Quite simply, no one ever chacked on him.

As a successful career policeman applying for a top job, it never occurred to anyone to check whether any of his medals and other signifiers of merit would not be genuine.

Astitchintime Mon 24-Jun-24 12:51:19

I wonder how many palms were greased for him to get away with his lies originally?

Sarnia Mon 24-Jun-24 12:46:18

An ex-wife reported him. Revenge is a dish best served cold.

OldFrill Mon 24-Jun-24 08:45:05

Evidence has been passed to the CPS who will decide whether to prosecute.

I suspect merlothtan that their contributions intothe pension fund are returned to them. Whether with interest based on the interest theywould have earned if they had put it in the building society, I am not sure.

David49 Sat 22-Jun-24 10:15:15

I’ve know a few, not high ranking like that, they walk the walk and talk the talk, if nobody checks it’s easy to do.

merlotgran Sat 22-Jun-24 09:00:53

I’ve always scratched my head when reading that somebody is dismissed without pension. I can understand it if the sacking is for a serious crime involving embezzlement or physical and mental harm to others but apart from the employer’s contributions, the money has been invested by the employee so it’s their money.

Yes, it beggars belief how he got away with it for so long, it is frightening really that the checks they did on this man was not very thorough which shows how often it is happening with the arrests of police who have committed serious sexual acts recently and were never suspected.

No , he will get his pension - and why shouldn't he? He has served in the police force for 30 years. Presumably entirely to everyone's satisfaction because he has risen through the ranks to be able to apply for the position of Chief Constable of a police force. There is no eveidence that his lying on his CV led to any failure to fight crime or dereliction of duty, outside his lying.

He has been sacked and exposed. I see no purpose in further punishment.

Iam64 Sat 22-Jun-24 08:42:17

He was dismissed. Doesn’t that mean no pension?

NotSpaghetti Sat 22-Jun-24 05:54:22

I think you are wrong OldFrill

Lying on your CV is classified as “fraud by false representation” and carries a maximum 10-year jail sentence.

What an idiot. Did he really not think he would be found out?

Well he got away with it for a good while so he obvs thought that he had.
He even wore a fake Falklands War medal, when he was only 15 at the time of that conflict

Doesn't say much for his colleagues' powers of detection does it? 😂

As it's not a criminal offence he keeps his pension. He was earning around £176,000 a year.

Really? I think he should lose it because he only climbed the career ladder so well because he repeatedly told lies. Surely lying in writing to the Police Service is a criminal offence.

flappergirl Fri 21-Jun-24 20:00:05

I think the bigger question is why his credentials weren't properly checked in the first place. The fault lies with the vetting process. On this occasion the man was "just" a fantasist but he could have been another Wayne Cousins. This lax checking procedure seems to be endemic in the force which is ironic, given they are the very people charged with keeping us safe.

It's hard to believe. A bit like a Jim Broadbent film!

Not hard to believe at all. The Met police knew that Wayne Couzens was a rapist and abuser.
Nothing shocks or surprises me anymore with the police force we have.

Susiewong65 Fri 21-Jun-24 19:00:41

Some people actually believe their own lies because they have lied so much over a long period of time it has become part of who they are.
Look at our politicians!
