Suggested that Tory Ministers might be involved. Not necessarily on the date of the election, but stuff in the budget and other things.

I really hope that’s not the case. The UK will be a laughing stock the world over if it is, and it will damage all politicians by association.

Candidates or Tory staffers; regardless of their job title, they were people on the inside, who clearly had inside knowledge of the upcoming date of the election and sought to make money from that knowledge.

Why? Just why? What were they thinking? The sums wouldn’t be life changing. Are they so immature or privileged or silly that they couldn’t see a problem with their actions? What was going on in their heads?

The answer is simple: they have had a life of being entitled. Why would you not think you have the right?

Its not a matter of IQ but Integrity.

The Labour Party's manifesto includes a plan to set up a completely Independent Ethics and Integrity Commission, with its own independent Chair. Outside of any party involvement. Currently it alludes to MP's and members of the HoL, it seems that it will need to include staffers too though.

I’m not having a go at public servants ( especially considering several family members are unfortunate enough to be them !) I’m talking about MPs here. Not the sharpest knives in the drawer with one or two exceptions,of course.

But there are no MPs involved in this latest 'scandal'. (apart from one former MP).

TBH I find your constant sniping from the sidelines about our political actors, when you haven't lived in Britain for decades, just a wee bit irritating.

There are no MPs at the moment, because parliament has been dissolved prior to the election - the involvement of candidates amounts to the same thing currently.

You’re right Grandmabatty, there is. I wonder if the employees of political parties are classed as, and come under the terms and conditions of civil servants?

I think there is a committee on standards at Westminster. Maybe it needs teeth. Of course, if it has cross party MPs on it, that would be no use in the build up to an election

To effect change you have to be in the
Party. Sunak said he was going to change the conservatives, ensure integrity etc and sadly he's failed. Starmer said he'd rid the labour party of antisemites and take the party back from corbyn politics. It seems he's done that. You can do nothing if you leave!

Perhaps it’s time for a parliamentary OFSTED type of body. Instead of
the Office for Standards in Education, (Children's Services and Skills) it could stand for the Office for Standards in government achievement, honesty and skills. It could be applied to the party in power and to the opposition.
The assessment would be once every 3 years.
The labelling and the refusal of the inspectorate to accept excuses would focus MPs on achieving the targets set out in the manifesto or prevent them making un achievable promises at election.
There could be league tables of MPs’ constituency achievements and naming and shaming of those deemed to be unsatisfactory or requiring improvement.

I think such things minor compared to someone that fought two elections supporting Corbyn who supports Hamas. Farage now a Putin supporter. Try living there, the Russians would give anything to have a democracy.

Well Sunak supported a PM who was thrown out of parliament in disgrace for lying. In fact most MP’s supported him knowing full well what he was like because he was a vote winner for them. The decent ones either refused to serve under him or were culled.

You’d be wrong though Allsorts. Corruption at the heart of government is very serious indeed. The opposition have no power in comparison, and people will be voting in the knowledge of what has gone before. I do feel sorry for Sunak on this though, I imagine this was all without his knowledge.

I was taking a break from Gransnet while I recover (I need peace and harmony) but that post really does need refuting.

No civil servants are involved in this latest scandal, nor any other.
These people are politicians and Tory party officials, apart from one very stupid protection officer who is ot a civil servant.

The civil servants have a hard enough time working for the various governments, being bullied by their aides without having their reputations smeared like that.

Yes, dragonfly many do have degrees or take Civil Service entrance exams.

So far (though I haven't seen today's papers) there has only been one former (because there are no MPs once parliament has been dissolved) MP named.

The rest seem to have been tory party staff members who are not civil servants.

Apparently part of Labour’s strategy was to watch the betting market, and because they watched the betting market spiking they guessed rightly that 4 July would be the day a few days before Sunak announced it. So the opposition knew before the cabinet😄😄

Wonder what else the Tories have cocked up.

I wondered why the bet had only been for £100 given that he only stood to win £400. Didn’t realise it was lots of £100 bets. It would have shown up in the betting markets.
