What immediate changes will the new Labour government make?

Our LA is resurfacing and top dressing roads like mad, at the moment, Casdon. It's a great relief.

Yes I expect there to be a challenge to Starmer but I expect the majority to continue to support him. Corbyn can’t be PM -Starmer chucked him out of Labour, he’s standing as an independent

I think they will be hidebound by their large donors Lord Sainsbury being one.. I don't think they'll be much different to the Tories sadly

Have no idea really Kandinsky and it depends what people view as improvements doesn’t it?
I think they’ll do the easy stuff in the manifesto, such as taking charitable status away from private schools.
Other than that and a few other easy changes I don’t expect that much will improve in the first year if I’m being honest.

They’ve already said they won’t be bringing in VAT on school fees ‘until at least 2025’. Which could mean anything.

And removal of charitable status, probably never.

I honestly can't see there being positives if Labour get in, I can only see negatives. Council Tax rises, infact any tax rises they think they can get away with, bigger class sizes, more people on benefits, an immigration explosion both legal and illegal. I can only see doom and gloom.

One thing I think they could visibly do in the first year is to give councils targeted funding to improve the roads, because I am b….y fed up of potholes.

I think they did that, Casdon but not enough. It probably equates to about 50p per pothole of extra funding.

However, a section of motorway near here has recently been resurfaced and it is such a contrast and a joy to travel along.

The government is responsible for motorways, so it’s good if something is being done about them, they really need improving (M42 in particular is dreadful currently) but I was thinking more of the A roads, and minor roads, which come under the local authorities, the potholes are now so bad they are joining together. I was up in Derbyshire a couple of weeks ago, and it was even worse than here in Powys which is saying a lot. A targeted road resurfacing programme (not more pothole repairs) would make such a difference.

They wouldn’t do it part way through a fiscal year and the next one starts in 2025. It will also require legislation as the supply of educational services is an exempt supply.

Frankly I don’t see where their money is coming from in the short term unless they create or borrow it. They say things which appeal to unquestioning voters.

I agree Germanshepherdsmum - wouldn’t be surprised if we end up having Corbyn as our PM.

Who do you think will challenge Sunak?

I will be voting Conservative - I don’t trust Labour on taxes or immigration and there is a big question mark over their ability to attract the investment they talk so much about. I also see signs of the old red flag still and I believe Starmer will soon face a leadership challenge from the left.

Haven’t had a Labour government since I was in my 40’s when my life was completely different. I’m 60 now and heading for retirement, just worried about what Labour will do to pensions and inheritance tax.

Tbf the Tories and Farage/reform are doing a pretty good job of bashing each other. However there's nothing stopping anyone posting positive stuff about the Tories or Reform if they can think of anything.

Sorry if my post comes across as passive aggressive, it probably does yes I’ll admit.
But that isn’t my intention.
TBH I hardly post on GN these days, but have browsed the last day or two and nothing changes - Torie & Farage bashing threads everywhere. Nothing easier than criticising from the sidelines.

I see that this morning a potential Conservative leadership candidate is suggesting the need to focus on rebuilding public services, housing, the nhs. It could be amusing - but it really isn’t

You can look forward to more austerity, ‘tough decisions on spending’ and tax rises, as well as increased immigration.

Tbh I think we'll have to wait longer than a year to see any improvements. We're in a mess, nothing works well and there's no money but at least I'll feel more hopeful for a fairer future.

I mean, all I see on here is how horrible the Conservative Party is, forget about them as they’ll be out of office in a few weeks.
What great things have we got to look forward to under Labour?
Apart from - ‘well, they’re not the Tories so that’s all that matters’
