What immediate changes will the new Labour government make?

Firstly, I’m certainly not counting my chickens about who’ll be in “power” on July 5th, secondly whomever it is, nothing radical can happen as without raising taxes to the absolute hilt for us all, which most of us do NOT want nor can afford, (if it was a few pence per £, I’d be fine with this), everything else in their plans (and all the other parties) needs time, many years, and some money.

I’ve read all the manifesto’s, cannot take Tories seriously as they’ve had their chance to put things right, Reform and Green are fiscal suicide, I don’t have an issue with LibDems or Labour, but at this juncture I’m simply waiting to see.

I read this morning that labours plans for housing is quite advanced.

Planning is one major area of reform.

I presume the first thing they will sort is the doctors pay claim to avoid any more strikes. They have been saying how the Conservative party has not been dealing with the matter in a correct way so no doubt they will put that right.

Mamardoit VAT on private school fees will only cause problems for state schools. There are loads of people who scrimp and save to send their kids to private schools for a multitude of reasons. VAT might be the final straw and they may have to send their kids to state schools now so class sizes will change.

Why, just why?

This is one of the things I worry about most.

I also fear more strikes in the public sector. Partly because I know it will be me who will be called upon to care for the dgc if their teachers walk out. That is a selfish reason I admit.

We are not going back to the Blair/Brown years when the coffers were full. We are probably heading for a winter of discontent. I really hope that won't happen but VAT on school fees can't fund everything.

Is it just me or do others long for the days when MPs had proper jobs for at least 10 years before becoming MPs . Living on the same wage as others doing the same job. Where they had to deal with real people daily. Where if you wanted something you had to work ,save and go without holidays to afford your own home, cars etc.

Both Labour and Tory MPs knew what it was like to work. I well remember when the mortgage rate went to 15% and VAT went up . Days of pole tax . Where you knew who your MP was and they lived in the area .

I will be voting for my MP as he is very good and cares about people he is Labour . I vote for the person not because of the party they represent. May be naive but it's how I have always voted .

But which ever party gets in they will break all the promises they make like all past governments. The rich will get richer and the poor poorer.

Wyllow, you seem to have a short memory. Mass immigration started under Blair's government, and with massive contract changes for GPs and dentists setting in motion the huge problems for the NHS and the whole country.
Also, Brexit, in my view, would have been far more succcessful, and quicker, had it not been for Remainers trying to reverse the decision and causing disruption for several years!

I realise you’re a dyed in the wool Tory GSM, but surely you can see that to give the Tories another five years is ridiculous.

Not ridiculous at all! Labour will just throw everything up in the air and start scrabbling around again.

TheConservatives have had so much to contend with after being left with no money byLabour, they had Brexit, then Covid pandemic, the war in Ukraine. All stuff that no other Govt has had to deal with. I think they did their best job.

The more I find out about Labours intentions, the more I disbelieve them.

They will of course have to scrape and bow to their Union paymasters. More strikes, then big pay rises.

They will put up all the other taxes other than those they have constantly assured us they will not (VAT, NI, PAYE)

As for immigration, other than we will talk to France which is what the Conservatives have been doing for years along with giving them millions to stop the boats which hasn’t worked, I have no idea why they think their talks will work 🤷‍♀️

I am still undecided, but honestly I am slowly veering to better the devil you know. I could not vote Reform, Greens, Lib Dem’s or Labour, so its Conservatives (with fingers crossed they have learnt a lesson) of an Independent.

The one certainty is that I will vote.

I think, Syracute, you need to read some commentaries about their ability to do what they set out in their manifesto.

And, for balance you should also read the manifestos of the other parties, compare their relative achievability, look at the track record of the last government in achieving its promises, and then make your mind up to vote for Labour, because that’s the most achievable.

I honestly can't see there being positives if Labour get in, I can only see negatives. Council Tax rises, infact any tax rises they think they can get away with, bigger class sizes, more people on benefits, an immigration explosion both legal and illegal. I can only see doom and gloom.

I want to see some stability. We have had five PMs and no end of chopping and changing in mininsterial departments. After the turbulence of Brexit, Covid and the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, I would really appreciate politicians being able to govern the country instead of fighting among themselves and just being out to make a quick buck.
How anyone can vote for more Tory chaos, corruption and disruption is beyond me.

Lets just get on with what Labour are desperate to do, which is get the country back to some security and stability. Heaven knows its needed.

The thought of a Labour government is extremely concerning for me. I feel they will carry on where Blair left off, and we will not recognise the country that we live in at all.

Surely our country is unrecognisable already since 2010? We've had Brexit, we've had years of austerity.

The situation is completely different. The Labour Party is starting from where we are now. How can it do any different? what would you have them do?

MaizieD I thought it was the job of the Civil Service to work out how to put legislation into effect.

I said that it was in my response. That is what 'implement' means.

The Association for First Division civil servants has a link to the high court case paperwork if anyone is interested.

Just to add.

The civil service code also recognises and allows for individual beliefs. So people can request to be moved from carry out work that goes against their religious belief or whatever.
